According to legend, the trulli (from Greek trullos – dome) were invented as a cunning plan devised by the inhabitants of the village when the local count introduced a tax on every newly built house. To avoid paying, the locals started building these stone, storehouse-like structures to mislead the tax collectors. If necessary, they could be dismantled in a matter of hours because the walls were dry-stone. The whole family used to live in one room, with the roof space often being separated with a plank “ceiling” where the kids were sent to sleep. Today, the trulli are protected by UNESCO.

One of the most emblematic photo sites in the town is the row of houses with pagan symbols on their roofs. The truth is there is nothing mystical about these symbols – they were ordered by the local tourist office in the 1930s because Mussolini was expected to pay a visit to the town.

I’d recommend spending more time in Aia Piccola – the other trulli area that has thankfully remained trinket-free. This is actually a residential area where many of the houses are still inhabited; it’s much calmer than its noisy neighbor, and you’ll probably be one of just a handful of tourists around.

One of the best views of the trulli comes from the vantage point of Belvedere Santa Lucia (see the map below).

This 12th-century castle has always been one of the biggest and most magnificent forts in Slovenia, no matter how often its residents have changed. One of the attractions of the castle – Frederick’s Tower – reveals the intriguing legend behind an impossible love story: the romance between Frederick, son of Count Herman II, and a beautiful maiden named Veronika. Count Herman II did not approve of their love, so he threw Frederick in the tower and left him there for more than four years until he died.

Centuries after these horrific events, the castle is now a museum displaying old vehicles, ethnographic items, swords and many more interesting exhibits. The building itself stands out as one of the most important historical examples of secular architecture in Croatia.

Brissac Castle – south of the city of Angers in France

The original castle here was built in the 11th century, and in the 15th century it was renovated by the Duke of Brissac. The twin towers, however, remained the same and can still be seen with their original facades. This castle is known as one of the most haunted places in the world – people claim to have seen and heard the ghost of the Lady in the Green Dress, a victim of a double murder that happened here in the 15th century.

Neuschwanstein Castle – near the town of Fussen, Bavaria, Germany

This famous castle was built by King Ludwig II, who is known as ‘The Fairytale King’. The spectacular surroundings of the castle – which sits atop a hill in the Alps of Bavaria – contribute to the fairytale ambiance it exudes. King Ludwig II is known to have admired and supported legendary composer Richard Wagner; the castle is actually built in his honor and the interior is inspired by some of his works.

Birr Castle – Birr, County Offaly, Ireland

Birr Castle was built in the 12th century and now serves as the residence of the 7th Earl of Rosse, which is why the residential part of the castle is not open to tourists. However, you can visit the gardens, which are home to many beautiful rare plants, as well as waterfalls, rivers and lakes. As you explore the grounds you’ll find the ‘Great Telescope’, which was built in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse and for 70 years remained the largest telescope in the world. It is nowadays arguably the largest historical scientific instrument still working.

Castle of Dona Chica – Braga, Portugal

The combination of architectural styles – Art Nouveau, Renaissance and Romanesque – as well as the creative mix of construction materials makes the appearance of this castle unique. The name Chica comes from the nickname of its original patroness, Francisca Peixoto Rego. Over the years the castle has changed hands many times, leading to plenty of discussion as to what should be done with it. However, none of these ideas have been turned into a reality, and the castle remains one of the most hauntingly beautiful abandoned places in the world – a must-see for those into ruins and abandoned sites.

#1 The construction of the Sagrada Familia started in 1882 and is expected to be finished by 2026 (144 years), which means it will have taken five times as long as it took to build the Egyptian pyramids or the Taj Mahal.

#2 Gaudi believed that a human’s work should never exceed the work of God, which is why the Sagrada Familia is projected to be a foot shorter than the highest natural point in Barcelona.

#3 It was built entirely on donations. And that’s the reason why Gaudi wanted it built one part at a time, so that people could actually see how it would look and be inspired to give more donations.

#4 The Sagrada Familia currently has eight towers. However, by the time it is finished, it will have 18 – the tallest one representing Jesus, another one for the Virgin Mary, four for the evangelists and 12 for the apostles.

#5 Gaudi’s work was largely inspired by nature. Evidence of this can be found in the columns inside the Sagrada Familia, which are built to look like trees with twisting branches. At the base of one of them there is a turtle, and on another one a tortoise, which symbolizes the balance between sea and land in nature.

#6 To sculpt the faces on “The Portal of Mercy”, Gaudi used death masks of deceased people from Barcelona and models of the workers’ faces. It was his way of paying tribute to them.

#7 The mosaic on the roof of the church is designed to guide seamen back home by reflecting the moonlight, thus turning it into a kind of lighthouse.

#8 During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Gaudi’s workshop – where the models used to build the church were stored – was bombed. The workers managed to restore the models and use them in construction, but only with the help of an architect who was hired specifically for the restoration.

#9 The two people buried in the crypt are Gaudi and Josep Maria Bocabella – the bookseller whose idea it was to build the Sagrada Familia, having been inspired by the churches he saw in the Vatican during his visit there in 1872.

#10 George Orwell, one the most famous English writers of the 20th century, said that the church is ”one of the most hideous buildings in the world”.
