Bangkok, the vibrant capital of Thailand, is a city where the streets buzz with life, the food is a tantalizing array of spices, and the culture is as rich as a bowl of tom yum soup. With its ever-present heat and bustle, there’s no better way to unwind than lounging by a rooftop pool, cocktail in hand, while soaking in the breathtaking views. Dive into our guide on the best rooftop pools in Bangkok, perfect for those seeking a splash of luxury amidst the urban jungle!

The Rooftop Experience: Why Pools with a View?

Imagine this: after a long day of exploring Bangkok’s bustling markets and ornate temples, you find yourself perched high above the city, in your swimsuit, just inches away from a shimmering infinity pool. The skyline stretches before you, the sunset paints the sky with hues of orange and pink, and you can almost hear the hustle below as you sip your mojito. It’s a postcard-perfect moment that deserves to be savored.

Rooftop pools are more than just a place to cool down; they’re a mini-vacation within your vacation. Think of them as the cherry on top of the delicious sundae that is Bangkok. The thrill of enjoying a luxurious swim while gazing at the city’s skyline is *unparalleled*. Plus, they often come with a cocktail bar, making it perfectly acceptable to have a drink at 2 PM—it’s for the Instagram content, right?

1. Banyan Tree Bangkok: Vertigo and Moon Bar

Climb up to the 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel, and you’ll find the iconic Vertigo and Moon Bar. This rooftop pool is not just about the water; it’s the experience of being on top of the world. The pool area has a unique design that lets you feel like you’re swimming through the skyline, with glistening lights twinkling beneath the water.

As you float in the infinity pool, your eyes can take a leisurely stroll across the stunning view of landmarks like the Chao Phraya River and the lively streets below. And when you want to take a break from the water, head over to the bar for a cocktail that’s just as refreshing as your dip.

Pro Tip:

Head over around sunset for a truly spectacular view that will have your camera working overtime. And don’t forget to try the signature cocktails—they’re as intriguing as they sound, like the “Moon Bar Mojito” that will have you dancing on the clouds!

2. The Okura Prestige Bangkok: Infinity Pool with a Twist

The Okura Prestige Bangkok features a stunning infinity pool perched on the 25th floor, but it’s not just about height—it’s about the incredible **view**. Enjoy an unobstructed gaze of the cityscape while chilling in the refreshing waters. This gem offers a blend of **Japanese hospitality** and Thai warmth that’s hard to resist.

The swimming pool isn’t just an afterthought here; it’s a centerpiece. Stretching across the rooftop, you can swim to the edge and feel like you’re floating above the city. With a cocktail menu that boasts both local flavors and international favorites, you can sip and swim to your heart’s content.

Pro Tip:

Don’t miss out on the poolside dining options. Treat yourself to a sushi platter while enjoying the view—nothing says relaxation quite like raw fish and a city view, right?

3. The Rooftop at the Lebua State Tower: A Scene Straight Out of a Movie

If you’ve seen “The Hangover Part II,” you’ve seen the stunning rooftop pool at the Lebua State Tower. This luscious pool offers epic views of the Chao Phraya River and beyond, making it one of the most photographed rooftops in Bangkok.

The pool area is nothing short of opulent, with plush lounge chairs and cabanas where you can lay back and soak up the sun (or shade, if you prefer). The bar serves a dazzling array of cocktails, and let’s be honest—nothing pairs quite as nicely with a bucket of shrimp chips as a fruity drink with a paper umbrella.

Pro Tip:

Get there early to secure a good spot—it fills up quicker than you can say “pad thai.” And definitely take a moment to snap some selfies; your friends back home will be envious of your sky-high oasis.

4. Sofitel So Bangkok: Chic and Stylish Vibes

Sofitel So Bangkok takes rooftop pools to another level of chicness. The pool itself is surrounded by lush greenery, giving it a tropical feel that contrasts beautifully with the sleek urban environment. You can stretch out in the water and feel enveloped in both serenity and sophistication at the same time.

The So Pool Bar offers a delightful menu of **global dishes** and creative cocktails, ensuring that your pool day is not just about floating but also about feasting. Don’t forget to try their signature drink—the “So Berry”—which is as tasty as it sounds.

Pro Tip:

Join for their sunset happy hour where you can sip cocktails as you bask in the golden glow of dusk. The backdrop? Just the dazzling Bangkok skyline.

Final Thoughts: Making a Splash in Bangkok

Rooftop pools in Bangkok provide not just a way to cool off, but an entire experience that elevates your travel adventure. From jaw-dropping views to delectable drinks, these spots are a welcome retreat amidst the city’s chaos. So, pack your swimsuit and your sense of adventure, and prepare to make a splash in Thailand’s vibrant capital!

After all, isn’t travel about creating memories just as much as soaking up the sun? Now go on, get out there and enjoy the ride—just don’t forget to hydrate, and by that, we mean cocktail hydrate!

Bangkok, the City of Angels, isn’t just about street food and vibrant markets. It’s also a place that reaches for the sky—literally. Here, the skyline is adorned with shimmering **skyscrapers** that offer **breathtaking views** and unique atmospheres. And what better way to appreciate this wonderful city than from a rooftop? Whether you’re sipping a cocktail at sunset or enjoying a late-night bite, these venues boast views that capture the essence of Bangkok.

Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower

First up, the iconic **Sky Bar** at Lebua State Tower. Known as one of the highest rooftop bars in the world, it sits at a staggering 820 feet above the bustling streets below. With a **panoramic view** of the Chao Phraya River and the glimmering cityscape, visitors can’t help but feel like they’re on top of the world.

What’s more, it’s famous for its cocktail, the “Hangovertini,” which was created for the cast of *The Hangover Part II*. Not that you’d need a movie star’s advice to enjoy it, but let’s be honest—who doesn’t want to sip a drink that has Hollywood cred? Just be prepared to drop a few Baht, as nothing quite says “I’m in Bangkok!” like paying for a drink that could fund a small country’s budget (well, maybe just a nice dinner).

Vertigo and Moon Bar at Banyan Tree

Next, we take a gentle glide over to the **Banyan Tree’s** Vertigo and Moon Bar. Climbing up to the 61st floor, the views are just as magnificent as the name suggests. Standing here, you can almost convince yourself that the bustling city below is merely a movie set. The thrum of traffic fades away, and you’re left with 360-degree vistas of both contemporary and traditional Bangkok—nice and peaceful, right?

Enjoy their delectable **seafood dishes** or their signature “Vertigo” cocktail, which will give you that giddy feeling that a rooftop this high up deserves. Just be mindful of the wind; it has a funny way of sneaking up on you and sending your hair into a frenzy. A gem of advice: hold onto your drink tightly unless you want to add a “wind-blown” look to your evening.

Octave Rooftop Lounge and Bar

For a more laid-back vibe with a trendy twist, Octave Rooftop Lounge and Bar at the Marriott Hotel offers a **three-level rooftop experience**. Spanning across levels 45 to 47, this venue provides a stunning view of Bangkok’s skyline that feels welcoming enough to settle into for the whole evening.

At Octave, the drinks are **reasonably priced**, so you can indulge without breaking the bank. With an eclectic mix of cocktails and tapas-inspired bites, you can munch your way through the night while relishing the sunset. The best part? You can often catch live DJs spinning tracks, which makes it the perfect spot for those who like their rooftop experiences to come with a side of groove.

Above Eleven

Nestled on the 33rd floor, Above Eleven offers a unique **Peruvian-Japanese dining experience** alongside its spectacular views of the city. This bar captures the essence of a park in the sky, with its green rooftop ambiance and artfully designed spaces. Here, you can order innovative dishes like a **Nikkei-inspired sushi platter** that’ll make your taste buds dance.

Remember to try their famed cocktails, crafted with precision and flair. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they also throw in weekly live music! The vibrant atmosphere here is perfect for those looking to kick back with friends while enjoying one of the best views from a rooftop.

Sirocco at Lebua

No list of Bangkok’s rooftop bars would be complete without mentioning **Sirocco**, which holds the title of one of the world’s highest open-air restaurants. Located at the same state as the Sky Bar, you’ll find that the **food here is just as impressive** as the views. Dining al fresco at Sirocco makes for a truly romantic setting, especially when the sun starts to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues.

Fancy a meal that will leave you buzzing with excitement? Indulge in their Mediterranean-inspired cuisine while soaking in the twinkling lights of the city below. But don’t get too caught up in the ambiance—your delectable meal is best enjoyed with both eyes open. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss the famous skyturning magenta while unveiling your dessert!

Conclusion

With so many stunning options, Bangkok’s rooftop bars and restaurants offer more than just a meal or a drink. They provide a chance to **experience the vibrant energy** of the city from above, where the sights are as enticing as the tastes. So next time you’re in Bangkok, make sure to put on your best outfit, arm yourself with a camera, and get ready to capture unforgettable moments with friends or loved ones while you enjoy the breath-taking views from those towering heights. After all, life is all about reaching for the stars—especially if they’re found on a rooftop in Bangkok!

Bangkok is a city that never sleeps, and its vibrant street food scene is a major reason for the city’s electric vibe. As you stroll through the bustling streets, you’re bound to encounter an array of mouth-watering dishes that tantalize your taste buds and share stories that resonate with the heart of Thai culture. For food lovers, Bangkok is nothing short of a heavenly buffet, and I’m here to guide you through the must-try street food that will turn your taste buds into connoisseurs.

The Chaotic Charm of Street Food Stalls

Walking through Bangkok’s chaotic streets feels like stepping into a culinary playground. Stalls line every nook and cranny, each attempting to outdo the other with tempting aromas and vibrant colors. From early morning until late at night, vendors brave the tropical heat, serving dishes that are as authentic as they are delicious. But amidst the madness, some street foods deserve special attention; they are the real stars of the show.

Pad Thai: The National Treasure

No street food adventure in Bangkok is complete without indulging in a plate of Pad Thai. This iconic dish typically features rice noodles stir-fried with shrimp or chicken, egg, tofu, bean sprouts, and peanuts, all jazzed up with a splash of lime and a sprinkle of chili flakes. It’s the kind of dish that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance. The best part? You can find Pad Thai from eateries that range from humble sidewalk stalls to chic rooftop restaurants—because let’s face it, nobody does Pad Thai quite like the streets of Bangkok.

Where to Find It

One of the best places to sample this delicious dish is at Thipsamai, often dubbed the best Pad Thai restaurant in Bangkok. With a long queue of eager diners, it’s clear that you’re in the right spot. Grab a seat and prepare for an explosion of flavors, all for a price that’s downright sinful.

Som Tum: A Salad with a Punch

If you think salads are all about leafy greens and boring dressings, think again! Som Tum, or spicy green papaya salad, is a dish that’ll kick your mundane salad perceptions to the curb. This zesty dish combines shredded green papaya, tomatoes, peanuts, lime, and fish sauce, resulting in a flavor explosion that’s as bright as the sun shining down on the streets. It’s the perfect antidote to the heat—plus, it’s highly Instagrammable!

Where to Find It

To get your Som Tum fix, head over to Soi Rambuttri, a quieter street where you’ll find various vendors serving their unique takes on the dish. Don’t shy away from asking for the spicy version; your taste buds will thank you (just make sure to have some water handy)!

Khao Niew Mamuang: Mango Sticky Rice Heaven

For those with a sweet tooth, Khao Niew Mamuang (mango sticky rice) is the dessert to end all desserts. Imagine perfectly cooked sticky rice drenched in coconut milk, served alongside ripe mango slices that are so juicy they might just make it rain. This dish combines textures and flavors that feel like they were crafted by a culinary angel.

Where to Find It

For an authentic experience, try the stalls around the Chatuchak Weekend Market. They have some of the best mango sticky rice in town, and let’s be honest, a quick visit to this market is just as important as the food itself!

Tom Yum Goong: A Spicy Dance

Next on our culinary adventure is the famous Tom Yum Goong, a hot and sour soup bursting with flavors that’ll awaken your senses. With shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, and a medley of herbs and spices, this dish is a symphony of tastes that reflects the very essence of Thai cuisine. It’s like a little party happening in your bowl!

Where to Find It

Vendors around the Banglamphu area take their Tom Yum seriously. Just follow your nose; the fragrant scents of lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves will lead you straight to heavenly bowls of this iconic soup.

Gai Yang: Grilled Chicken Delight

Imagine enjoying tender, marinated grilled chicken that’s bursting with flavor, paired with a spicy dipping sauce. That’s Gai Yang for you! This beloved Thai dish can be found sizzling away at countless street stalls, promising a taste of grilled perfection.

Where to Find It

Chinatown is a treasure trove for Gai Yang enthusiasts. Head to Yaowarat Road after sunset, when the area comes alive with vendors grilling chicken to perfection. Your nose won’t lie; the aroma will lead you to the best spots!

Final Thoughts: A Feast for All the Senses

Exploring Bangkok’s street food scene is more than just a culinary quest; it’s a sensory journey that immerses you in the heart of Thailand’s vibrant culture. The colors, the sounds, the smells, and of course, the flavors come together to create an experience that is as memorable as it is delicious. So grab your appetite, your sense of adventure, and set out into the bustling streets of Bangkok. Who knows what delightful surprises await you? Happy eating!

Bangkok is a city that never fails to dazzle. Known for its vibrant street life, eclectic cuisine, and ornate temples, it’s also a magnet for some of the most exciting and colorful festivals in the world. If you happen to be in Thailand’s capital, consider slipping your feet into a pair of dancing shoes or easing your tongue into spicy street food because the festivals in this city are something to behold!

The Songkran Festival: A Splash-Tacular New Year

Every April, Bangkok transforms into a water-filled wonderland as locals and tourists alike take part in the Songkran Festival, celebrating the traditional Thai New Year. This is not just any regular celebration; it turns the entire city into a gigantic water fight extravaganza.

Dousing your friends, family, and even unsuspecting strangers with water is not just accepted—it’s encouraged! Armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses, participants spray water everywhere. Streets may become rivers, and every corner could potentially turn into a battleground for the ultimate water showdown. Just remember: when in Bangkok, do as the Bangkokians do.

Beyond the soaking fun, this festival holds a deeper meaning. It’s a time for honoring elders, visiting temples, and cleansing oneself of past misdeeds to welcome the new year with fresh opportunities. So, while you’re busy soaking up the good times, don’t forget to pay your respects at a local temple or offer food to the monks. It’s a win-win situation: have fun and engage in some good karma!

Loy Krathong: The Festival of Lights

If you’re lucky enough to be in Bangkok during Loy Krathong, prepare for a sight that will take your breath away. Traditionally celebrated on the night of the full moon in November, Loy Krathong showcases countless floating lanterns lighting up the Chao Phraya River.

The night is filled with exquisite floating baskets (krathongs) adorned with flowers, candles, and incense. People send their krathongs down the river as a gesture of gratitude to the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha. You might even want to make a wish—who knows? It could come true!

As you stroll along the riverbanks, the atmosphere is charged with excitement. Capture that magical moment on your phone, or better yet, join the crowds and release your own lantern into the shimmering water. However, just a friendly reminder: no swimming with the fish after you’ve launched your krathong; they might not appreciate an unexpected splish-splash!

Chinese New Year: A Festival of Prosperity

Your adventure in Bangkok wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the Chinese New Year, which takes place between January and February, depending on the lunar calendar. The Yaowarat area, also known as Chinatown, turns into a fiery spectacle filled with dragon and lion dances, vibrant processions, and mouth-watering street food that will make your stomach growl louder than any dragon dance!

Prepare your taste buds for a whirlwind of flavors as you munch on traditional delicacies like dumplings, spring rolls, and golden cakes; trust us, you’ll want to follow the aromas wafting through the air. The atmosphere is electric, and the streets are lit with red lanterns everywhere you turn, symbolizing joy and good fortune.

You might even find yourself participating in a fun activity like throwing firecrackers. Just a word of caution: not everyone is a fan of the explosion sounds, so make sure there’s a festival spirit alive around before you pop those baby dragons!

Visakha Bucha: A Day of Reflection

For those who lean toward spiritual experiences, Visakha Bucha is a significant Buddhist festival not to be missed. Celebrated on the full moon day in May, it commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. Temples across Bangkok fill up with people wearing white, engaging in merit-making activities such as meditating and offering food to monks.

The heartwarming sight of people circumambulating the temples while carrying candles is a feast for the eyes. Join them as they walk in silent reverence, holding their candles high to illuminate their hopes and prayers. It’s a gentle reminder of how festivals can bring about introspection and connection.

Bangkok’s Hidden Gems and Local Festivals

While the big-name festivals certainly steal the limelight, Bangkok has an array of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Look for community celebrations, food festivals, or even small art fairs sprinkled throughout the city. These local events might not have the crowds, but they often present an authentic slice of Thai culture, including traditional dances and music performances.

Check out events like the Bangkok Design Week and the Bangkok Art Biennale for a blast of creativity mixed with local flavor. These contemporary festivals often invite you to connect with the city in a different light—not through water fights or lanterns, but through artistic expression and innovation.

Get Your Festival Gear Ready!

As you plan your visit to Bangkok, pack your sense of adventure and perhaps a waterproof case for your phone because you never know when a water fight might spring up! Whether you’re interested in cultural immersion, culinary explorations, or simply dancing your heart out in the streets, Bangkok’s festivals have something for everyone.

And who knows, by the end of your trip, you may just find yourself wishing for a splash of Songkran water or the glow of a Loy Krathong lantern long after you’ve returned home. Happy festival hopping!

Tips when visiting Buddhist temples in Thailand

In all Buddhist temples, shorts and sleeveless tops are forbidden, dress appropriately by covering your shoulders and knees. You must take off your shoes before entering a temple, although you can wear them in the yard. Women are not allowed to touch monks or novices but can freely speak with them. Most Buddhist temples in Bangkok have a small admission fee for foreigners (usually 40 baht unless there’s a museum or an important relic inside).

This huge Buddha statue (46 m/150 feet long) needs a huge complex to house it. Wat Pho is one of the main Bangkok attractions and it’s first on the list of first-rank royal temples in Thailand (only six temples are on the list). It comprises 91 small and 4 large chedis (Thai stupas), a central shrine, and many other buildings. The biggest collection of images of the Buddha in Thailand, more than 1000, is kept here. The Reclining Buddha statue itself is squeezed in one of the smaller temples. We recommend you get a guide or download some history about Wat Pho as there is so much to decipher.

A Thai massage school is situated in Wat Pho, which means that if the day has been too long and tiring, you can spend a little more time in the temple area and spoil yourself with a Thai massage (30 minutes – 260 baht). It’s worth it as Wat Pho temple is considered the birthplace of Thai massage. More information here.

The Emerald Buddha is a statue that has been around Asia for more than 2000 years and is considered the protective image of Thailand and Thai people. You might be surprised that such an important figurine is only 66 cm (2 feet) tall. It’s made of semi-precious green stone (jasper or jade rather than emerald) and wears gold clothes. Fun fact: the king of Thailand changes the clothes of the Emerald Buddha three times a year (March, August and November).

Legend has it that the Emerald Buddha was crafted in 43 BC in India and moved through the centuries from Sri Lanka to Laos and Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew temple, where the statue can be seen today, is the most sacred and important temple in Thailand.

Although Wat Arun means the Temple of Dawn, for the most amazing views you’d better see it at sunset… and from the other side of the river. Wat Arun is located on the west bank of Chao Phraya river and usually you have to take a boat to get there. Just go to the nearest river pier and take a look at the public boat transportation maps to see what boat number you need to hop on.

If Wat Arun looks familiar to you even before you’ve visited it, that’s because it’s on the back of the 10-baht coin. However, the coin can’t capture the delicate tiny Chinese ceramic pieces that cover the towers of the temple named after the Hindu god Aruna.

This glittering temple on top of an artificial hill is one of the best spots to see Bangkok from above without having to pay for expensive beer and cocktails in high-end bars in skyscrapers. The marshy ground couldn’t support a heavy structure, though, and it collapsed before it was finished. Several stories like this were repeated over the years with new attempts to solidify the mound. Today it has a concrete cap on top but the base still consists of bricks. You have 300 spiraling steps to climb but it’s not a strenuous walk and part of it is under the shade of trees. The view from the top is worth it. Wat Saket, also known as Phu Khao Thong or the Golden Mount, is quite far from other attractions in Bangkok and far from convenient public transportation, so you might need to take a taxi.

We challenge you: Get to know Buddhism better by chatting with a monk

Buddhism is an essential part of what Thailand is and you can’t get to know the country without knowing Buddhism. You can read books or articles on the internet (like this one) but still, the best way is to go to the source.

If you want to talk to a Buddhist monk, you should learn Thai. There is an easier way, though. Just find a friendly English-speaking monk. Here is our guide how to do it.

Monks chanting in Wat Phra Singh Temple, Chiang Mai © Maria Angelova/www.203challenges.com

Monk chats in Chiang Mai and Bangkok

Some temples in Thailand offer foreigners the chance to join monk chats where monks will willingly answer all your questions. Usually, these are young students from a Buddhist school who practice their English while giving you an insight to their life.

One of the most popular places to join a monk chat is in Chiang Mai. Go to Wat Chedi Luang Temple (from 9 to 18) or Wat Suan Dok (from 17 to 19) and look for the benches with monks waiting to talk to foreigners. You can ask them anything – from the basics of Buddhism to general questions about life in Thailand. Your satisfaction from the conversation will depend on the monk’s level of English (and yours, too). Even though monks are not allowed to touch or approach women, gender is not an issue if you want to speak with them.

As of 2017, there are no monk chats in Bangkok.

Monk chat at Wat Chedi Luang Temple, Chiang Mai © Maria Angelova/www.203challenges.com

Friendly monks

Many of the Thai Buddhist monks know a little English (often very basic, though) and most of them will be happy to talk to you.

I saw an elderly Buddhist monk taking photos in the Chiang Mai Wat Pra That Doi Suthep temple (or simply Doi Suthep) and I approached him wanting to show him a beautiful angle to shoot the building. He smiled at me and asked me in broken English where I was from. That’s how we started chatting and he tried to squeeze the essence of Buddhism in three sentences for me. We are calm inside, he said, but distractions coming through our eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and mind sabotage our innate serenity. That’s where suffering comes from. So we should always follow the middle way – neither too much positivity, nor too much negativity.

“But you seem really happy,” my Western mind insisted. “Yes, yes, true. Sometimes it is possible to be happy,” he answered.

In the end, we took a selfie together and he gave me his email address to send him the photo (in case you are curious, he did reply to my email a few weeks later).

As there are no designated monk chats in Bangkok, finding an English-speaking monk at a temple is your only chance to get answers to your questions.

To make it easier, here is a list of the 5 best temples to visit in Bangkok (especially if you are short of time).

Live with monks in a Buddhist temple

One of the main obstacles preventing you from staying at any temple or monastery in Thailand is the language barrier. Not the rules, as Buddhism is open to every religion. Since more and more foreigners are interested in getting a deeper knowledge of Buddhism, there are now some temples that organize retreats and meditation sessions in English. When choosing one make sure it is a temple with monks, not a retreat wellness center so that you have an authentic experience.

Your stay could vary from a few hours (meditation only) to months. A nice two-week stay is offered by Wat Sriboonruang Temple in Chiang Mai (website here).
