A night in a floating bungalow will easily turn into a highlight of your trip to Thailand. There are popular 2 day/1 night tours in Khao Sok National Park in Southern Thailand, where you’ll explore Cheow Lan Lake and sleep more than an hour by boat from the nearest shore. The bungalows are very basic: essentially just a floating box containing a mattress with a mosquito net over it. During our stay the raft house gently swayed, while the whole jungle orchestra performed a lullaby for us, including monkey calls, insect mating cries, and the roars of indistinguishable beasts. The views at sunset are magical and the night sky makes you believe it’s the first time you’ve really seen the stars.

If you’re traveling on a budget (although you don’t really need a lot of money to travel in Thailand) and you’re struggling to find cheap flights to the far-flung destinations on your list, you’re sure to experience Thai night trains at some point. During the high season, tickets for long-haul trains on popular routes such as Bangkok – Chiang Mai and Bangkok – Suratthani sell out very fast, and you’ll have to book your seat/bunk bed a week or two in advance.

The sleeping cars in Thailand come in two varieties – with AC and with fan (cheaper). The fan option was quite bearable despite all the bad reviews we had read about it (and we also met Santa Claus from Australia in that car, but that’s another story to be told some other time). When the sun sets, the attendant unfolds the seats into beds and gives you linen and pillows. When the sun rises, make sure you wake up to see the majestic light and mist show out the window.

I got the impression that most hostels in Thailand are family-owned, which means that from day one you are considered a family member and treated as such.

True story: Our first night in Bangkok was a nightmare with a happy ending (not that kind!). We arrived from the airport late in the evening and took a tuk-tuk, handing the address of our booked hostel (Love Hostel) to the driver. But what a sense of adventure overwhelmed me when, already at the desired address, we discovered there was no such hostel here. After 10 minutes of wandering around, we were sure this supposed hostel did not exist anywhere within a radius of 10 streets. I called the hostel’s telephone number and nobody answered. We continued searching in the hope that we’d notice a hidden tiny sign to our hostel, and in the process we accidentally entered a Buddhist monastery, which was fun but not really helpful. In my despair, I called again and this time the owner answered. After 20 minutes of discussions and zigzagging the streets, he finally found us and took us to our refuge for the night.

At first, we thought he and his wife didn’t speak English, but a day later we realized they spoke English with Thai pronunciation, i.e. not pronouncing a single consonant (or so it seemed). Just try to speak this way and get the message across that there’s a leak in the upper-floor bathroom… Anyway, once we started understanding them, we also came to understand that they were constantly joking about us, themselves and everything else around. We loved these people and prolonged our stay with them by two additional days.

Then, two weeks later, we had to stay another night in Bangkok and chose the same hostel. Not only did the owners give us a huge discount on the already cheap room, but they also supplied us with free bananas for our night train ride the next day. From time to time, they still send us photos of their family and cats on Facebook.

With this oversized story, I’m putting an end to this post and wishing you a homey and adventurous stay in Thailand!

We challenge you: Find three amazing unique hostels in Colombia for a different stay

I am passionate about traveling and backpacking. My usual itinerary is as eventful as possible. As an avid traveller, when it comes to accommodation, hostels are my first option.

What do I look for in a hostel?

In general, I look for a good location, relatively good reviews and a variety of services that the hostel offers free of charge or in exchange for a small fee. After all, you’ve got to make your money count, especially when traveling on a tight budget.

During my recent trip to Colombia, the hostel that combined all three in the best possible way was:

Hostel Masaya in Santa Marta

©Masaya Hostels

Located in the heart of Santa Marta, the second oldest city on the Caribbean coast, Hostel Masaya offers the most perfect hostel experience you could ask for!

The hostel is situated in a National Heritage listed Colonial house with a spacious inside patio, three floors, and wooden staircases. The atmosphere takes you back in time. That’s not all – you can enjoy the two pools, a rooftop that has one of the best views of the Cathedral, relax-zones, hammocks, deckchairs, and a cozy bar where you can sip on late night drinks or have breakfast in the morning.

A place to gather and to share

© Masaya Hostels

Masaya aims at being not only a comfortable hostel, but a social place. The hostel offers a different 100% Colombian cultural activity every day. There are salsa lessons, cooking classes, live music and Spanish parties!

The first time I walked in Hostel Masaya I truly thought it was the hostel with the most unique atmosphere I have ever been to. I ended up staying there twice during my trip – once in a dorm, once in a private room. Both are comfortable, spacious, with nearly 5-meter tall ceilings. The private rooms are named after famous Colombians such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Shakira, Carlos Vives, Juan Valdez and more, and there is a catchy colorful theme going on in each one of them.

My stay at Masaya made me reconsider the way I travel. I decided that from now on I will put aside more time to dive in the local atmosphere and just to relax. Even for as little as two days, I enjoyed every minute of my Masaya experience drinking mojitos at the rooftop and swinging in the hammocks. The staff was friendly and helpful.

No breakfast is usually a deal breaker for me

I would definitely cross off my list a hostel that does not offer free breakfast (Cheap deals are acceptable). No wi-fi would also be an issue. It is the 21st century, right? However, one of the best hostels we stayed in Colombia was a wi-fi free zone and it was just great. If you would like to tune off and relax, I highly recommend:

Casa Loma in Minca

Casa Loma is the place to chill, relax, detox and go offline! It is an alternative hostel with open-air dorms and hammocks situated on a hill overlooking Santa Marta and the Sierra Nevada National Park. In order to reach the hostel, you first have to hike about 10 minutes up cobblestone stairs.

The view at the top is totally worth it, particularly at sunset!

The hilltop wooden house is the main building of the house. You will find the kitchen (maybe with quality kitchen counter or other stones for kitchen) and common area there, as well as a couple of terraces and a few hammocks to enjoy the view. Casa Loma is surrounded by tropical forest and you can hear birds singing everywhere! With no roads, cars, shops or noisy neighbors you will be able to fully enjoy the peace and quiet, reconnect with your inner self, just lie in a hammock, drink a beer or take a nap.

The hostel serves only vegetarian food and it offers a delicious set breakfast menu and a daily lunch and dinner menu. They are famous for their curry and Mexican nights.

I was happy to arrive in time for sunset (I had a time for yoga retreat), so I could join the dozen lucky people on the terrace for happy-hour cocktails with an amazing view. A couple of passion fruit Mojitos later we all watched in awe as the sun set behind the mountains.

The third place I would like to mention here is:

Casa del Ritmo in Santa Marta

© Casa del Ritmo

Casa del Ritmo is a typical colorful house located near El Rotadero – one of the famous beaches on the Caribbean coast. I spent only one night there on my way back from Minca. It was towards the end of my Colombia trip but the setting and atmosphere, and especially the friendly service made me feel at home.

The hostel was not busy at the time, so I was pampered by the staff’s full attention and hospitality. Sandra showed me around and recommended dinner and drink options. She is funny and just great! Every room is named after a different music genre – Pop, Jazz, Bossa Nova, Tango, Salsa and so on. I got Salsa!

© Casa del Ritmo

Talking about food, this is another veggie hostel that offers fresh local food. Don’t miss the happy hour of the Art bar! They use real fruit for their Mojitos, Margaritas and Caipirinhas. Casa del Ritmo is also one of the few places where I was able to find the limited addition coca-infused beer Happy Coca from the Nevada brewery.

If you’re thinking about traveling solo, you may be wondering where to stay. Hotels can be expensive and stressful, while camping may not be your cup of tea and may be difficult to manage. So, what’s the best option for solo travelers? The best answer we have got for you is hostels.

Hostels provide travelers with a unique opportunity to meet other like-minded people from all over the world. Plus, they are usually more affordable than hotels, and you can find them in almost any city. On that note, we have briefly explained the benefits of staying in a hostel while traveling.

Read on to find useful insights.

Meet People from All Over the World

There is nothing more entertaining than hearing the stories of other travelers. And if you’re feeling lazy, there are usually plenty of other travelers around that you can chat with and get tips from. You can learn about their cultures, home countries, and favorite places to visit.

You can also get some great tips on where to go and what to see in your own travels. You might even make some lifelong friends there. In short, hostels are the perfect place to meet other travelers and get free entertainment and insights into the different world’s cultures.

Free Entertainment

The best part about staying in a hostel is the free entertainment. In the evenings, when you get back to your room after a full day of adventure, you can usually find a hostel bar or common area where travelers gather to socialize and entertain themselves.

Moreover, if you need your own entertainment, you can book a party hotel in the heart of the city. There are also youth hostels and private hostels available for booking, so you can choose whichever level of entertainment you want.

All you have to do is go to a hostels to book website and book your preferred type of hostel facility in the area you are planning to travel to. There will surely be a place that will suit your traveling needs and budget.

Centrally Located Facilities

There’s nothing worse than being stuck in a bad location when you’re trying to enjoy a vacation or travel for business. But when you stay in a hostel, you can be assured that you’ll be centrally located and close to all the action.

This is because hostels are designed for travelers and are typically located in the heart of cities and towns. This means you’ll be able to walk to all the best attractions, restaurants, and bars without having to worry about being too far from the action.

And if you need public transportation, most hostels are within walking distance of a train or bus station. So, save yourself the hassle and stay in a hostel next time you travel. You’ll be glad you did.

Save Money by Cooking Your Own Meals

Unlike most hotels, hostels offer kitchens that are usually fully equipped with all the pots, pans, and utensils you need to prepare your own meals. So, why order your meals from outside and compromise your health and budget when you can cook your own healthy meals according to your needs?

This can save you a lot of money, as you won’t need to always eat out, especially if you are traveling to a country with a high cost of living. Plus, cooking your own meals can be a great way to meet other travelers and learn about their experiences in the city.

You can also group with a couple of other travelers to share your meals and help each other cook them and buy groceries. This can be a great experience that hotels won’t be able to give you.

Cheaper Deals than Hotels

When you travel, you want to make sure you find the best accommodation option that suits your needs and budget. Let us tell you one thing. Hostels have covered all these things for you. For every traveler, staying in a hotel is a general concept, but only some of them know that hostels can be a far better option.

These facilities are way cheaper than hotels, and if you are on a tight budget, it can be a great way to manage your accommodation. For example, traveling to Berlin can be a costly experience, but if you can find a hostel near the city, you won’t have to worry about additional hotel expenses.

Additionally, many hostels offer discounts for long-term stays, so if you’re planning to travel for an extended period of time, this could be a cost-effective option.

The Staff are Friendlier

Compared to a hotel’s professional and restricted environment, hostels are a better way to relax and be social with others. The staff there are usually cool with guests and can even guide you on which things you can do while staying in the city.

Moreover, depending on the type of hostel you’ve selected, you can party along with the staff. In short, it can be a great opportunity to try new things and step out of your comfort zone.
