Ah, London! The city where the Queen reigns, and the weather is as unpredictable as a cat on a hot tin roof. Most tourists flock to the usual hotspots like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and the London Eye, but if you want to experience the city like a true local, there’s a whole world waiting for you just beyond the tourist traps. So grab your umbrella (just in case) and let’s dive into some fun and quirky ways to experience London.

Start Your Day with a Proper British Breakfast

There’s a reason why they call it a full English breakfast. This hearty meal is the best way to kick off your day like a local. Think sausages, bacon, eggs (fried, scrambled, or poached, you choose), baked beans, grilled tomatoes, and of course, toast. Pair it with a spot of tea—or if you’re feeling adventurous, a Yorkshire tea—and you’re good to go!

While famous spots like The Breakfast Club can get quite busy, why not venture into the less-known local cafés? Consider visiting Greasy Spoon in Clapton or Aubyn’s in Canonbury, where you’ll find all the grease and no pretense. Just remember to leave a tip; the locals, and the waiters, appreciate it!

Stroll Through Secret Gardens

Everyone knows about Hyde Park, but London is full of hidden green gems waiting to be discovered. Head over to Postman’s Park, tucked away in the heart of the city. This charming little park features a touching memorial dedicated to heroic self-sacrifice—perfect for bringing out the inner sentimentalist.

Or roam into columbia Road Flower Market on a Sunday. Surrounded by vibrant blooms and a cacophony of vendors hawking their goods, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a floral wonderland. Trust me; you’ll leave with a bouquet—or at least a soul more refreshed than when you arrived.

Explore Local Neighbourhoods

Take a walk on the wilder side of London’s neighborhoods. Heading to Shoreditch is a must for those who appreciate street art, trendy boutiques, and eateries serving everything from artisanal donuts to great craft beers. Don’t forget to snap a picture with the murals; they’re practically begging for it!

Then there’s Brixton, where you’ll be swept into a world of vibrant culture, from its bustling market to friendly locals who may just invite you to join in on a game of dominoes. Feeling peckish? Head over to Brixton Village, where a smorgasbord of international cuisines awaits. Trust me, the jerk chicken is to die for!

Catch a Show on the West End—But for Less!

Think the West End is out of your price range? Think again! For the bravest of souls inclined to schedule spontaneity, you can snag same-day tickets at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square for a fraction of the price. From musicals to drama, there’s something for everyone. Plus, the sheer neon lights and buzz of excitement will have you grinning before the curtain even rises.

If you’re in the mood for something a tad less touristy, consider checking out a local pub theatre. Places like The Old Red Lion in Islington host new and emerging talents and provide a taste of London’s vibrant theatrical scene without breaking the bank.

Embrace the Pub Life

No trip to London would be complete without indulging in a classic British pastime: the good old pub. Sure, you can find a pint at almost every corner, but for a truly local experience, seek out a hidden gem like The Churchill Arms in Kensington, famous for its overflowing flower baskets and Thai food.

Or try The Pelican, a quintessential British boozer in Notting Hill where the only drama you’ll witness is the weekly quiz night! Grab your friends, form a team, and prepare to question everything you thought you knew about pop culture, while getting cheerfully buzzed on pints of ale.

Transport Like a Local

Forget the overpriced taxis; the true London experience happens on its famous double-decker buses and the Underground. Get an Oyster card and hop on the bus. Make sure to sit on the top deck for panoramic views and the occasional jolt of excitement when you inevitably get stuck in a traffic jam. It’s all part of the adventure!

And for those moments when you find yourself staring at a Tube map like a confused tourist, just remember: the Tube is more than just a network of lines; it’s a rite of passage. You’ll find yourself navigating like a seasoned local in no time.

Wrap Up with a Sunset at Primrose Hill

After a long day of exploring, there’s nothing quite like winding down with a stunning view of the London skyline. Head over to Primrose Hill—a favorite spot for locals to watch the sunset. Grab a picnic blanket, some snacks, and enjoy the spectacular view while you relax and reflect on your city adventures.

And who knows? You might just be joined by a friendly pup eager to share your crumbs. Nothing connects you to a city quite like a shared moment with a tail-wagging local! Who says you can’t experience London like a local? Just remember, if someone asks if you’re a tourist, you can confidently reply, “Nope, I just visited some of the best-kept secrets.”

So there you have it! With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing the genuine charm of London. Just keep your umbrella handy, embrace the quirky, and enjoy every delightful moment of being a London local.

We all know about Couchsurfing. Some of us have even tried it and survived to tell the tale (and some of us have even met our future proofreader through the website, but that’s another story to be told some other time). There are, however, many more online options that can help you enrich your travels without breaking the bank. How many of these have you personally tested?

Meet locals: Global Greeter Network

Global Greeter Network is my favorite way to find a local guide to show you around for free and answer all the questions you might have about the place you’re visiting. The network now includes more than 150 cities all over the world, and it’s continually growing. Unlike many other similar services, Global Greeter Network is not tip-based; it’s completely free.

Meet locals: MeetUp

MeetUp is a platform where everyone can create or join a meeting in their current location. These are social events ranging from yoga classes to book clubs, mindfulness practices, outdoor sports and language exchanges. The events themselves can be free or paid, but don’t worry – this is specified in the meetup description. If you don’t find any meetup that suits you, just create your own!

Offline navigation: Google Maps

Since Google Maps released its offline version, travelers’ lives have changed forever. No longer do you need to use expensive data roaming to find your way in a foreign city! Of course, one of the main drawbacks of the app is that the downloadable files are huge (usually several hundred megabytes) and take up large chunks of your phone’s memory. You can find full instructions on how to download and use offline maps here.

Offline navigation: Maps.me

In some countries (Thailand for example), Google Maps doesn’t support offline navigation. That’s when you need to find a substitute, and the perfect substitute is Maps.me. This app requires way less phone storage space than Google Maps and has proven to be incredibly accurate (like that one time when it guided us through a secret passageway in a floating market – it was so well-hidden that we didn’t even realize we were supposed to buy tickets).

Meditation: Calm

Calm is a leading meditation app that offers enough free stuff to keep your spirituality high on the road. Choose from the list of meditation melodies, and download your favorites for those moments when (gasp!) you don’t have internet access. The app also features a few guided meditations, timed meditations and sleep stories. The handy calendar makes it easy for you to catch up if you miss a meditation session.

Find the cheapest flights, regardless of the dates and destinations: Kiwi

Sometimes you simply have a little extra cash and no preferences for where and when you want to go. Kiwi.com is the perfect tool for these situations – you can set your outgoing destination and dates (or not!), and Kiwi will find you the cheapest flights to anywhere in the world.

Find cheap flights and error fares: Secret Flying

Of all the error fare services I’ve tested, Secret Flying has proven to be one of the best. On its Facebook page, it posts flight deals and worldwide error fares several times a day. Just hit the “See first” option on Facebook to make sure you don’t miss a good deal. There’s also a search bar on the website, which allows you to search by destination or date.
