Birthdays! Who doesn’t love that one day of the year when you sit awkwardly with a stupid smile on your face while people you may or may not know are singing at the top of their lungs “Haaaapy bithdaaaaay to youu”. I have always found that tradition pretty strange, but it turns out there are even stranger ways people around the world celebrate their birthday.

The bumps (England and Ireland)

If you happen to celebrate your birthday in the company of some English and Irish friends, don’t get surprised when the moment comes for them to take you by the hands and legs and “bump” you up into the air and back to the floor – and then again, and again until the number of “bumps” reaches the age you are turning.

Beating with belts (Poland)

Turning 18 is a big thing in Europe – you suddenly find yourself with a lot of exciting new opportunities, you don’t need mom and dad’s permission to do anything and you are no longer a child. And to welcome you to adulthood, Poles will slap you 18 times on the ass with a belt in front of all your guests in the middle of your birthday party. I am not quite sure how to comment on this, so let’s just leave it here and move a bit north to…

Decapitating the cake (Denmark)

…where the roles swap. The birthday person is no longer being tortured but rather turns into the torturer – over their birthday cake. In Denmark it is common for the birthday cake (called Kagemand) to be shaped and decorated to look like a man (if it’s a boy’s birthday) or woman (if it’s a girl’s birthday). After the kid has finished blowing out the candles, they cut off the head of the cake-person while all the other kids around are screaming their own heads off.

A cute one to restore your faith in humanity (Ukraine)

We are finishing the list of bizarre birthday customs in Ukraine, with one that (thankfully) doesn’t hurt anyone. Ukrainians draw a circle on a piece of paper, which they cut into eight slices like pizza. On each of them they write something bad that happened in the last year and then burn that “slice”. When the bad things are all burned and buried in the past, the same “pizza” is made – this time with the positive changes in the past year of one’s life.

Ear pulling (Hungary, Italy, Brazil, Argentina…)

The idea of showing the birthday person that you are happy they were born and you wish them a happy and long life by actually causing them physical discomfort is not foreign to Hungarians or Italians either – they will pull your earlobes, once again the same number of times as the age you are turning. This practice is also common in Brazil and Argentina.

Pin for later:

A detailed guide for Ibiza Island

This article is for all those Ibiza lovers, who have never been on the craziest party island in the world.

The moment I sit to write down about the endless marathons, the image of Ibiza Town pops up in my mind – a party center, where everyone comes to have fun in the hours when the “normal” people are sleeping, working or dealing with their everyday routine.

The luxuriant scenery, the ceaseless fiestas, the most incredible sound and DJs, the magical VIP zones raised high above the tables and with a view to a sea of people, the dancers and the foam shooting – even the boldest fantasies become reality here!

Drawing a comparison with Las Vegas is frequent and logical since the concept of a small island, offering endless entertainment nights and exploding fun, is exactly as scandalous as building a Disneyland for adults in the middle of the Nevada desert.

My party adrenaline starts raising high in line with the BPM of the sets aired on the Ibiza Global Radio – follow the rhytm and you’re there!

How to get there?

Ibiza Airport services the Balearic Islands – Ibiza and the nearby Formentera. It is located 7 km southwest of our target. There are many different flight options, according to your starting location.

From the moment you set foot on the ground you will feel the party spirit of this wild island. All billboards at the airport invite you to the forthcoming parties at some of the coolest clubs – Amnesia, Space, Privilege… At the exits you are welcomed by suited cheerful nutters, who give you a wad of flyers chanting “Arriba, arribaaaaa!”

Expenses at Ibiza

The stay at Ibiza Island is connected with many expenses. Of course, the budget is an individual matter, but there are things you cannot skip, if you are here for some real fun.

The cost of a night-stay varies from EUR 50 per room to several hundreds of euro a night at a five-star hotel or a luxurious complex.

The entrance fees to clubs like Space and Amnesia start at EUR 30 and reach EUR 100. If you make an advance online purchase, the price can be even half lower. Drinks cost EUR 15-20 a glass, while water – about EUR 10.

The beach bars have more affordable prices, almost half cheaper.

When it comes to food, there are many options – from hamburgers and fries for EUR 5 to Mediterranean meals for EUR 30 at the restaurants, or you may simply go to the local supermarket and spend around EUR 15 for weekly food supplies.

Transport

The basic means of transport at the island is the taxi. Although the cabs are rather costly, there seems to be a deficit in the peak of the season. The distance between the Ibiza Town and San Antonio (about 15 km) costs around EUR 40.

Parties

And when it comes to parties – it’s all about you. Follow your favorite clubs and artists and join the party!
