Visitors have noted that the ambiance provides a reflective space, sparking a deeper appreciation for the history and stories woven into its walls.

In conclusion, visiting the Colosseum at night is a must for anyone traveling to Rome. The breathtaking views, fewer crowds, and magical atmosphere create an experience that is both memorable and enriching. As travel continues to evolve, more tourists are recognizing the value of these unique opportunities, making nighttime explorations a growing trend.

If you ever find yourself in Rome, you might be tempted to skip over Vatican City, thinking it’s just a tiny little enclave with a big dome. Think again! This world’s smallest independent state is bursting with art, history, and enough spiritual energy to make even the most hardened skeptic feel a twinge of awe. So, grab your sandals, slap on some sunblock, and let’s explore how to spend a divine weekend in **Vatican City**!

Friday Evening: Arrive and Savor

Let’s kick off your weekend with a delightful dinner in the **Trastevere** neighborhood, just a stone’s throw from Vatican City. This vibrant area is known for its narrow cobblestone streets and lively atmosphere. Try a typical Roman dish—perhaps some delectable **Cacio e Pepe** (pasta with cheese and pepper) or a hearty serving of **Saltimbocca alla Romana** (veal wrapped in prosciutto). Trust me, your taste buds will thank you while your waistline… well, let’s not think about that just yet.

After dinner, it’s time for a gelato stroll. You’ll want to stop by **Gelateria dei Gracchi**, renowned for its creamy goodness. As you savor that sweet indulgence, take a moment to absorb the lively ambiance around you. Street performers, couples sharing laughs, and old men giving unsolicited advice about the best pizza places will make you feel right at home.

Saturday: A Brush with the Divine

Early birds, rejoice! The best way to experience **Vatican City** is to arrive before the usual tourist throng. Head straight to the **Vatican Museums**, where art and history come together in a glorious celebration of human creativity. You’ll want to spend a good chunk of your day here—there’s so much to see! A tip: keep an eye out for the dazzling **Raphael Rooms**—each wall tells stories so rich, you might wonder if you accidentally stepped into a time machine.

The Sistine Chapel: The Heavenly Ceiling

After working your way through the halls of artistic wonders, you’ve finally arrived at the **Sistine Chapel**. Here lies Michelangelo’s iconic ceiling painting—a masterpiece that has the power to make you contemplate the vastness of existence or simply daydream about what it would be like to nap under such grandeur. Just remember, in the Sistine Chapel, silence is the rule of law. Be sure to practice your best “sacred whisper” voice; it’s a great way to feel elite.

St. Peter’s Basilica: A Church Like No Other

Once you’ve peeled yourself away from the mesmerizing chapel, make your way to the **St. Peter’s Basilica**. This architectural marvel is boasting a dome designed by Michelangelo himself—though rumor has it, he almost needed a divine intervention to finish it. As you enter, you’ll be greeted by a wealth of **baroque architecture** and the awe-inspiring **Pietà**, a sculpture that evokes more emotions than your last family reunion.

Feeling adventurous? Climb the 551 steps to the top of the dome for breathtaking views of **Rome** and beyond. Don’t worry; the elevator will take you most of the way. But don’t forget to breathe—between the soaring heights and the experience, you may need a moment in the fresh air to remind yourself you aren’t about to faint.

Saturday Afternoon: Wander the Secrets

Once you’ve soaked in the sights, it’s time for a leisurely stroll. Head to the **Vatican Gardens**—a serene oasis that carries an air of mystery, intrigue, and perfectly trimmed hedges. They’re only accessible via guided tours, so be sure to book in advance. The gardens are home to ancient sculptures and fountains that can make even the toughest of travelers feel a little Zen.

Lunch and a Hidden Gem

After your stroll, treat yourself to lunch at **Pizzarium**, located just outside the Vatican walls. Their gourmet pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) is so tasty it might make you question all other pizza you’ve had in your life. Pair it with a refreshing drink, and you’re good to go. Now you can explore the less-touristy spots around the Vatican—like the **Papal Museums** or the **Borgo Pio** street, where you can find charming boutiques and sweet little cafés.

Saturday Evening: The Local Vibes

As the sun sets, make your way back to **Trastevere** for a nightcap. Choose a cozy wine bar, where you can sip on some Italian red while watching the world go by. Engage with locals, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself in an impromptu group singing traditional Roman songs. It’s all part of the experience!

Sunday: A Day of Reflection

After an unforgettable Saturday, Sunday begins with a more spiritual focus. Attend the **Papal Mass** at St. Peter’s Basilica if you’re lucky enough to coincide your visit with one of the audiences. Even if you’re not particularly religious, the atmosphere will leave you feeling moved, as thousands gather in unity—everyone there simply to soak up the essence of what makes the Vatican special.

A Final Lunch and Departure

Before you bid farewell to this tiny city-state, grab a final meal at **La Tavernetta**. Indulge in the freshest **seafood pasta** and reminisce about your whirlwind adventure. As you prepare to leave, allow a moment to appreciate the unique blend of history, art, and spirituality you’ve just experienced.

And there you have it—a **weekend in Vatican City** that makes you feel like a seasoned traveler and spiritual adventurer all in one. Pack your bags and remember: there’s always more to explore, and every turn could lead you to your next great discovery!

Picture this: narrow cobblestone streets, charming piazzas, and the aroma of fresh pasta wafting through the air. Welcome to Trastevere, Rome’s vibrant neighborhood that feels a tad less touristy and a whole lot more like the real deal. If you’re wandering the Eternal City and haven’t stopped by this picturesque area, it’s time to lace up your walking shoes and dive into the magic of Trastevere.

Rich History and Quaint Charm

Trastevere’s charm is steeped in history. Originally a working-class neighborhood, it’s now a buzzing hub filled with locals and visitors alike. The name “Trastevere” comes from the Latin words for “beyond the Tiber,” and that’s exactly where it sits—just across the river from the main tourist attractions. As you stroll through the winding alleyways, you’ll feel like you’ve been whisked back in time. The buildings are adorned with ivy and colorful shutters—perfect for that Instagram post you’ve been dreaming about.

But let’s not forget, this neighborhood has stories to tell. The area is home to the iconic Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest churches in Rome, dating back to the early 4th century. Legend has it that the church is built on the site where a miracle occurred, as visions of the Virgin Mary appeared and oil was found in the earth. Talk about a divine spot! You can spend a few moments gazing at its golden mosaics and imagining the saints chatting about their plans for the day.

Food, Glorious Food!

Oh, the food! If you name a dish, you’ll likely find it in Trastevere, and 9 times out of 10, it’ll be delicious. From pasta carbonara to supplì (fried rice balls filled with gooey mozzarella), this area is a feast for your taste buds. Make a point to visit a local trattoria, where you can enjoy genuine Roman dishes often cooked by the nonna (grandma) of the house. You’ll feel like a part of the family—just don’t expect her to let you leave without dessert.

Now, allow me to give you some friendly advice: never pass on the tiramisù. With its layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and rich mascarpone, it’s the dessert that dreams are made of. By the time you finish your meal, you’ll be rolling down the cobblestone streets, fully equipped with a happy belly and a heart full of joy.

Artistic Vibes and Nighttime Bliss

After basking in all that pasta goodness, it’s time to soak up some culture. Trastevere isn’t just about food; it’s also a hotspot for art and creativity. Check out the contemporary art galleries scattered around, where local artists showcase their work. You’ll find everything from quirky paintings that might leave you scratching your head to sculptures that could start philosophical debates. It’s a true testament to the vibrant spirit of the neighborhood.

Trastevere doesn’t ugly up when the sun goes down—oh no! The nightlife is just as lively as its streets during the day. Dive into one of the many bars serving up incredible cocktails, a perfect way to chill after a long day of sightseeing. The piazzas transform into outdoor lounges where locals gather to share stories and laughter. You might even find an impromptu concert or a street performer—so keep an eye out and your camera ready!

A Walk to Remember

If you’re feeling adventurous, venture to the Janiculum Hill. It’s a bit of a hike, but don’t worry, your legs will thank you later. Offering one of the most stunning views of Rome, there’s nothing like standing up there with a breathtaking vista of the city’s rooftops and domes. Time your visit with sunset, and you’ll witness the sky transform into a beautiful canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. You may even find yourself shedding a few tears over the sheer beauty of it all. (It’s totally normal, don’t worry.)

Embrace the Local Life

One of the main attractions of Trastevere is the chance to experience a slice of local Roman life. The best way to do this is to simply wander. Get lost in the maze of streets, pop into little shops, and don’t be shy about chatting with locals. They’re often more than willing to share tales of their favorite haunts or give you recommendations on hidden gems you might not find in the guidebooks.

Lastly, don’t forget to grab a gelato on your way out! It’s like a rite of passage in Italy, and Trastevere is overflowing with gelaterias offering every flavor from pistachio to the potentially daring—but absolutely delicious—basil. Your sweet tooth will thank you.

Trastevere Awaits

So, if you find yourself in Rome, carve out some time to explore Trastevere. Between its rich history, mouthwatering cuisine, and artistic flair, it’s a neighborhood brimming with character. Whether you’re wandering through its cobbled streets, indulging in a feast, or taking in a stunning sunset, you’ll discover that Trastevere is not just a place but an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. Make sure your camera is charged; you’ll want to capture every moment!

Rome: A Journey Through Time

When it comes to historical sites, the **Eternal City** stands as a colossal museum that never closes. Strolling through Rome feels like wandering through the pages of a history book, but with gelato in hand and a sprinkle of adventure! From ancient ruins that would make even the most seasoned archaeologist giddy to breathtaking architecture that makes you wonder if you’ve stepped into a postcard, Rome is a must-visit. Buckle up, folks; we’re about to dive into some of the crème de la crème of historical gems!

The Colosseum: Gladiators and Grazing Goats

Imagine yourself standing before the massive **Colosseum**, the iconic symbol of Rome. Built in AD 70-80, this amphitheater was once the venue for gladiatorial contests, dramatic spectacles, and, yes, the occasional grazing goat. Seriously though, this architectural marvel could seat over 50,000 spectators! Now, don’t worry; there are no gladiators slashing it out today, but the surrounding atmosphere is alive with tour guides spilling tales of emperors and the sometimes absurd antics of Roman citizens.

As you walk through its ancient corridors, remember to snap a selfie with that filter that makes you look “ancient” too! Just don’t forget to take a moment to absorb the history—after all, you’re standing in a place where the very essence of entertainment began!

The Roman Forum: Where Politics Meets Pasta

Just a stone’s throw away from the Colosseum lies the **Roman Forum**—a sprawling ruin of temples and public spaces where the bustling life of ancient Rome took place. This was the hub of social, political, and economic life back in the day. If walls could talk, they would spill scandalous deeds and political intrigue that would make today’s reality TV shows look like child’s play.

While navigating through the remnants of temples, basilicas, and arches, you can almost hear the echoes of Cicero’s speeches and senators plotting their next move. Pro tip: brush up on your Latin, or just nod enthusiastically while pretending to understand what everyone else is mumbling about.

Pantheon: A Dome with a View

Next on your historical itinerary should be the **Pantheon**—a former Roman temple and now a church that boasts the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. Built around AD 126, this architectural wonder has withstood the test of time, much like your favorite pair of jeans. When you step inside, the oculus (the round opening at the dome’s apex) offers a glimpse into the glorious Roman sky, reminding us that regardless of the era, daydreaming remains a universal pastime.

As you absorb the beauty of this majestic structure, a wave of inspiration may wash over you. Perhaps you’ll feel motivated to achieve greatness, or more likely, just to hunt down the nearest **pasta place** to fuel your next exploration.

Vatican City: The Pope’s Playground

Now, did someone say “smallest independent state in the world?” Welcome to **Vatican City**, where art, religion, and history collide in the most spectacular fashion. Home to the Pope, this micro-state is packed with awe-inspiring sites like **St. Peter’s Basilica** and the **Sistine Chapel**. Make sure to stand in front of Michelangelo’s mesmerizing ceiling and indulge in a moment of reverence—or squeal quietly at the mind-boggling artistry above you.

Oh, and if you’re lucky enough to witness the Pope’s address (just don’t ask him about gluten-free pasta), you’ll have a story that will make your friends back home green with envy!

Castel Sant’Angelo: A Fortress Fit for a…Angel?

Once the tomb of Emperor Hadrian, **Castel Sant’Angelo** has traded bathtubs for battlements over the centuries. Perched along the Tiber River, this fortress has served various purposes: fortress, papal residence, and even a prison! If the walls could talk, they’d spill secrets that could rival a soap opera’s plot twists.

Climbing to the top offers breathtaking views of the city, so don’t forget to flaunt that camera! Just be careful of sneaky pigeons; they’re known to photobomb the best shots.

Conclusion: More Than Just Ruins

As your historical journey through Rome comes to an end, you’ll realize that every **stone, every archway, and every cobblestone** street is steeped in stories of heartache, joy, and human endeavors. Rome isn’t just about gazing at beautiful ruins; it’s about connecting with the **human experience** that transcends time. So pack your bags, grab your travel journal, and prepare for a trip that may just inspire your own historical saga!

Whether you’re a history buff or simply in it for the gelato, Rome promises to deliver an unforgettable experience. And remember, when in doubt, just follow your nose; it will lead you to the nearest delicious **pizza**! Happy travels!

No real visit to Rome can go without the ritual of tossing of a coin into the Trevi Fountain. After all, who would be willing to gamble with their chances of revisiting the Eternal City?

According to the tradition, once you are in front of the 300-year-old fountain, you should turn around and toss a coin over your shoulder and into the water. While you are doing that, don’t forget to make a wish – in this case, it can only be to return to Rome. (for more places to visit if you want your wishes to come true, read here)

But how and when has this strictly observed tradition come to be?

Rumor has it, that the first ones who started to fling their money into the Trevi Fountain were German intellectuals, who came to Rome at the turn of the 18th century. As they parted ways with the city, the Germans would toss a coin into the fountain, thus repeating and old pagan ritual of presenting gifts, such as money, to gods which were believed to inhabit the waters.

This ritual became well-known all over the world in the 50s, when it was depicted in movies and songs, such as “Three Coins in the Fountain” (performed by many artists, including Frank Sinatra) and “Arrividerci Roma” by Claudio Villa.

The rest was left up to the revival of tourism, after World War II, as well as the idea of la dolce vita, which inspired thousands to flock to Rome.

So what happens to the coins tossed into the fountain?

The coins from the Trevi Fountain are being collected on a regular basis and given to the charitable organization Caritas Diocesana di Roma, which caters to the needs of the homeless in Rome.

Below you’ll find a curious video of how the coins from the Trevi Fountainare are being collected:

This odd bell tower rises above the water… with no church attached to it. The reason is that in 1950 the city of Curon Venosta was submerged in a man-made lake, called Lago di Resia (Reschensee in German). During the winter, the lake freezes over and you can walk to the bell tower. Curon Venosta is located in the North of Italy, near the borders with Switzerland and Austria.

The challenge: see what a plebeian saw during a gladiator fight by climbing to the newly accessible top level of the Colosseum in Rome

Imagine what a gladiator fight looked like through the eyes of a plebeian – he could only afford the cheapest seats set on top of the Colosseum, from where the fighters down in the arena looked like tiny ants.

Nowadays, though, the logic is different – from the top you get one of the most beautiful panoramas of Rome, and everyone wants to go there. From November 1, 2017, it will be possible to enjoy this view, because the top level of the Colosseum will be open to visitors for the first time (until now, the highest point you could reach was the third level).

What can you see from the top of the Colosseum?

Risen above the crowds, at 50 m (164 ft) above ground level, you can see the Palatine Hill, the Roman Forum, the Arch of Constantine and a whole host of other Roman attractions.

How can you get to the top level of the Colosseum?

Starting from November 1, 2017, you can join an organized tour to the top level (no individual visits are allowed). A reservation in advance is required (it should soon appear on the official ticket website of the Colosseum here).

How much does it cost to visit the top level of the Colosseum?

The top level tour will cost an additional 9 euros, on top of your basic 12 euro entrance ticket.

You can read all the travel guides and watch all the vlogs about a destination, but there’s still nothing like experiencing it through the eyes of those who spend all their days there, who know the best and worst things about the place – the locals. That’s why we’ve asked locals from several of the world’s best-loved cities to tell us about their hometown’s most interesting hidden gems. Here’s what Luigi told us about his city: Rome.

Only in Rome, you can… walk through history.

When I want to take a walk in nature, I go… 20 minutes by car from Rome, to Albano Lake. It is a really nice place – green all around.

Few people know that… if you are ‘thirsty’ (for a drink with a kick) but you don’t want to spend a lot, you should go to a bangla (mini-market).

Make sure you try… Carbonara and Cacio e Pepe, the most typical types of pasta in Rome.

…and the best place to try it is… around Trastevere quarter.

The best place for coffee and cake is… Giolitti. It’s very good, but it’s not the only cafe worth checking out.

The famous Giolitti – Andy Montgomery / Flickr

Whenever I want to enjoy some tranquility… I like to sit near the Pantheon at night.

The best view of Rome is from… Pincio or Giardino degli Aranci. Near Giardino degli Aranci there is a place where you can see San Pietro Church through the keyhole.

Panoramic view from Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden) / Wikipedia

When I was a kid my favorite place to go was… the sea. When I was a child I always went there with my parents.

Pin it so you can fulfill the saying ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do”:
