This is the story of how a bit of color turned an Indonesian slum into an Instagram sensation that can benefit locals…

The idea

Kampung Pelangi, now known as ‘Rainbow Village’, is located in Semarang, in Central Java, Indonesia – 300 miles (480 km) east of the capital, Jakarta. It was an ordinary low-income village until April this year, when a high-school principal, Slamet Widodo, came up with the idea to paint its houses, benches and bridges in different bright colors in an effort to attract more tourists to the area and improve the economic situation in his community. This plan followed the example of other Indonesian villages that have undergone similar colorful changes, including Kampung Warna Warni and Kampung Tridi.

The makeover

The local council decided to give 300 million Indonesian rupiah (around $22,000) to turn Widodo’s idea into a reality. In a month the 223 houses in the suburb were each painted with at least three different, bright colors. The Indonesian Builders Association in Semarang provided paint and workers for the refurbishment, while the residents themselves took part in the painting process, as did the mayor of Semarang.

Instagram tourism

After the news of the village’s colorful new appearance spread across the internet, it began to fill with tourists searching for some positive vibes in their day and that perfect Instagram shot. And since the makeover was made for that purpose, it is no surprise that Instagrammable murals can be found around every corner. About 7000 posts with the hashtag #kampungpelangi already exist and the number is growing every day. Among the most famous wall pieces are backdrops for people to pose with butterfly and angel wings, mystical creatures, balloons, umbrellas and even Kung Fu Panda himself.

The pay-off

Residents are already feeling the positive economic effects that the new tourist attraction has had on their lives, increasing their income through markets for tours, souvenirs and street food. The village is now cleaner and more dynamic than ever – in fact, further plans for the project include removing waste from the local river.

L’église de la Madeleine

6 pm – I take the metro and go down to the banks of Seine to enjoy the lovely sunset. I exit at La Madeleine and marvel at the extraordinary church for a while. Then, I head down to Place de la Concorde, one of Paris’s main squares. It is not dinner time yet, so I decide to satisfy my sweet-tooth with a 150 year-old French classic.

6:15 pm – Luckily, Ladurée is on my way. The luxury Pâtisserie established in 1862 and it has become the world’s best-known seller of premium macarons. They sell an average of 15 000 macarons every day! I had to make a quick stop!

6:30 pm – Only 3 macarons later, I walk out the store. The winners were Coconut, Pistachio and Rose. So sweet and tender! Anyway, I would love to see the sun set over the Seine, so I hurry up to the closest bridge. I stop only to snap a couple of photos of the Obelisk and the Arc de Triomphe in the background.

6:45 pm – I walk over Pont des Arts just in time. The river, the colors, the amazing architecture around…What a stunning view! I sit in awe here for a second admiring the sunset.

7 pm – Pont des Arts is also famous for the love locks attached to it. The tradition started back in 2008. Couples used to attach padlocks marked with their names and then throw the key into the Seine river below as a romantic gesture. This tendency grew so popular that the bridge became structurally weaker carrying the weight of all that love. Unfortunately, in 2015 the Parisian authorities took drastic measures and began detaching sections of the bridge railings together with the padlocks. They have replaced them with love locks inspired graffiti.

7:30 pm – I walk along the river until I reach Île de la Cité,  the famous island where the city was founded. I cross over Pont Neuf and go on gazing around until I end up in front of the magnificent Notre-Dame de Paris. The cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the world. I take my time to admire this elaborate work of art – sculptures, stained glass, rose windows. It is difficult to take your eyes off Notre-Dame, especially in the twilight.

8 pm – I need a break to recover after devouring all that beauty. I find the perfect spot across the street – Shakespeare and Company Café. Time for some French hot chocolat!

8:30 pm – Overwhelmed by this gorgeous spring day, I realize I am starving. I head back to Monmartre. Looking for a good meal as well as a good time to end up the night right, I walk upon a truly unique bistro. Le refuge will serve you wine in baby bottles while you are eating fondue. It is also great value for money. If you choose the fixed menu, you’ll be served an appetizer, cheese or meat fondue (go for the cheese!), dessert and wine for as much as 22 euros. A pretty good deal, right?

9:30 pm – On my way to the hostel, I cannot stop myself from walking by Sacré-Coeur once again. A quick night photo shoot and I am done!

Reina Sofia Museum

The museum is housed in a six-story building, which was formerly the Old Madrid General Hospital. Nowadays, the building is home to one of the finest collections of 20th-century art in the world. The museum is divided into three collections and includes masterpieces by Picasso and Dali.

• Guernica by Pablo Picasso. Guernica is undoubtedly Picasso’s most famous work, and one of the most moving anti-war art pieces in the world. Created in 1937, it reflects the tragic consequences of war and the toll it takes on civilians. The painting depicts the Nazi bombing over the Basque village of Guernica, as requested by the Spanish Nationalists. It was not just an aesthetic statement; this painting brought international attention to the horrors of the Spanish Civil War.

• The Great Masturbator by Salvador Dali. This is one of Dali’s most famous works from his surrealist period. The centrally placed head is a kind of self-portrait of Dali and is shaped like the rocks of Cape Creus, where he lived at the time. The nude female figure resembles Gala, who was Dali’s muse during this period. One possible interpretation connects the painting with Dali’s conflicted sexuality and his surreal attempts to express those feelings.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

The Thyssen-Bornemisza’s collection was once the second biggest private collection in the world. Now it is often seen as a supplement to the other two museums in the ‘triangle’. Nevertheless, it covers some styles and epochs that the others miss, and houses some world-renowned paintings that are well worth checking out:

• View of Vessenots, Auvers by Vincent van Gogh. Bright colors depict a few cottages and some swaying trees on the horizon in this iconic landscape. The painting – and more specifically the disturbed brushstrokes – is typical of van Gogh’s last period; he painted a lot of landscapes in this manner in the weeks before his death.

• The Grand Canal from San Vio, Venice by Giovanni Antonio Canal. Better known as Canaletto, Canal was one of the most famous Venetian painters in the 18th century. His accuracy in depicting the city’s landscapes was appreciated by art lovers and important figures of his era.

The Prado Museum houses one of the finest collections of European art in the world, and undoubtedly the best collection of Spanish art. Some of its most iconic paintings include:

• Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez. Velázquez was one of the most important artists of the Spanish Golden Age. His paintings were rich in cultural and historical significance, but he also dabbled in simpler works, such as portraits of the royal family. His single most famous work is Las Meninas. It measures about 10.5 by 9 feet (3.2 by 2.75 m) and is a constant source of fascination and debate among art scholars, since it’s kind of a mash-up between subjects and genres. The central figure is Margaret Theresa of Spain, the daughter of King Philip IV, surrounded by her maids of honor (hence the name Las Meninas). On the left side you can see Diego Velázquez himself, and in the frame in the background you’ll notice a portrait of the king and queen. One of the painting’s great mysteries is the question of what Velazquez is painting on the canvas in front of him. What do you think he’s up to?

• The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch introduces Eve to Adam in the Garden of Eden, surrounded by interesting hybrid animals and plants. In the central frame, nude men and women enjoy various ‘activities’ surrounded by other recognizable and unrecognizable creatures in a surrealistic paradise garden. The right frame is markedly different; this is where all hell breaks loose, literally. In contrast to the first two frames, the right is painted in dark colors, depicting wars and torture caused by the carnal temptations of the previous panel. When the wings are closed, they form a perfect sphere, with God in the upper left corner – a depiction of the creation of the world.

• The Third of May 1808 by Francisco Goya – the painting Kenneth Clark described as “the first great picture which can be called revolutionary in every sense of the word, in style, in subject, and in intention”. This masterpiece is the artist’s tribute to the rebels of the uprising against the French invasion. As its title suggests, it depicts the events of the third of May, when rebels were rounded up and shot by the French.

• The Descent from the Cross by Rogier van der Weyden. The Flemish artist created his masterpiece in 1435 with the idea that it would bring him international recognition. He succeeded, and his most famous painting has influenced a huge number of artists generations into the future. Its ambiance of sorrow is powerful and inevitable, and even not-so-religious people are sure to be moved by its grim beauty. One of the most interesting details is the body of the Virgin Mary, whose pose mimics that of Jesus.

#1 Most people know that Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, but up to this day the model herself remains a mystery. Some even say the painting is a female representation of Da Vinci himself. The most popular theory is that the lady in the painting is Lisa Gherardini, born in 1479. Why Da Vinci chose her is still a mystery.

#2 Have you noticed that the Mona Lisa has no eyebrows? One theory posits that some craftsmen made a mistake while restoring the painting and accidentally ‘erased’ her eyebrows. Another version of events suggests that Da Vinci never finished the painting (many of his paintings remained unfinished).

#3 In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre, in broad daylight, by a museum employee. It was returned two years later.

#4 That theft explains why the Mona Lisa is now displayed in the Louvre in a purpose-built, climate-controlled enclosure behind bulletproof glass. The room’s construction cost $7 million.

#5 The painting can’t be insured against theft as it is considered to be priceless, and therefore impossible to insure. 

#6 The painting has been vandalized numerous times. In 1956, it happened twice – once when acid was poured on it, and the second time when a man threw a rock at it, in the process damaging the paint on the Mona Lisa’s left elbow (later painted over). In recent years, glass has been thrown at it and red paint has been sprayed on it… although fortunately the painting’s bulletproof glass covering proved its worth and the masterpiece was not harmed in either incident.

#7 The Mona Lisa is actually much smaller than you might expect before seeing it in person – 77 x 53 cm (30 x 21 in), to be exact.

#8 The painting’s name is almost certainly the result of a typo. Instead of the Mona Lisa, it was supposed to be named the Monna Lisa (Monna being the Italian shortening of ‘Madonna’ or ‘Our Lady’).

The painting is located on the first floor of the Louvre, in Denon wing, Room 6.

Unlike many other iconic works of art, The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci has never been part of a private collection… mainly because it was painted on the wall of a small church in Milan, which made it too hard to move (or steal). But just like many other iconic works of art, it’s quite tricky to visit.

Thousands of tourists arrive and leave Milan without having glimpsed the famous painting, because you need to reserve your ticket, sometimes months in advance. Here’s how to break the Da Vinci Code and organize a smooth visit.

Where is the Last Supper painted?

Few people know that this famous work by Da Vinci was painted on the wall of the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria Delle Grazie in 1498. It was commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, the patron of Leonardo Da Vinci. It measures 4.80 x 8.80 m (15.75 x 28.9 ft) and its name in Italian (if you’re looking for signs to follow) is Cenacolo Vinciano.

Why are so few people allowed to see the Last Supper?

Because of the techniques and materials Leonardo used for painting, the work started crumbling as early as 1517. It has suffered from damage several times through the centuries, most recently during the WWII bombardments. From 1978 until 1999 the refectory was rebuilt as a sealed, temperature and humidity-controlled room in place of its original design. Visitors enter the refectory after they have passed through a humidity-controlling transfer room, in groups of no more than 30 people. They are allowed to remain inside for no more than 15 minutes.

How can you buy a ticket for The Last Supper?

You need to buy your ticket in advance – you can do it online from the official ticketing website here. You can buy a ticket three months in advance and the new tickets are released online around the 10th of the month (but dates vary so check online). Tickets cost 10 euro per person (5 euro for EU citizens between 18 and 25 years old) + 2 euro booking fee.

Why are there so few tickets available?

It may seem that there are very few tickets available when you look at the monthly chart. The reason for that is that travel agencies buy many of the tickets for their tourist groups or resell them later (and add various fees to the price, of course). Some agencies claim that it’s impossible to buy a ticket for The Last Supper individually and try to make you pay for a guide, or package your visit with tours to other attractions in Milan. Don’t fall for this – it’s not true.

What else should I know?

There is no written information in the hall where The Last Supper is displayed, so find some information about the painting in advance or get an audio guide (you can book it together with your ticket or get it when you arrive). Your ticket will have a fixed date and time printed on it, and you should arrive 20 minutes before the start of your session.

What if I can’t find tickets? Is there another way to see it?

Not really. Unless you count the little-known fact that there’s a copy of The Last Supper painted by one of Leonardo’s apprentices and it’s completely free to visit at Basilica di San Lorenzo. One amazing fact: some parts of this copy are better preserved than the original!

The Vancouver Police Museum and Archives

The Vancouver Police Museum and Archives is an independent museum run by the Vancouver Police Historical Society. In an authentic heritage building, it takes you on a journey through the city’s history of policing, crime, and justice, up to the modern day. Exhibits include criminal artist sketching, mock crime scenes, and for the more macabre tastes, the original morgue and autopsy facility.

The Jimi Hendrix Shrine

Jimi’s grandmother, Nora Hendrix, lived in Vancouver and owned Vie’s Chicken and Steakhouse where the shrine is now located and where Jimi would spend summers visiting his grandmother. Legend has it that Jimi and his cousins would help serve great artists like Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong. The entrance is free but donations are welcome.

Neon Vancouver/Ugly Vancouver Exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver

From the 1950’s through the 1970’s Vancouver had nearly 19,000 neon signs whose presence caused a city-wide controversy over what was tacky and what was glamorous. Many of these signs, some rescued from the junk yard, are located here along with the history of this war of aesthetics.

The ‘Giants’ on Granville Island

Six 70-foot tall silos at the Ocean Concrete worksite on Granville Island have been turned into works of art by Brazilian twins Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo. Commissioned by Vancouver Biennale in 2014, these silos are now some of the most photographed works of art in the city. Unfortunately, they cost approximately $17,000 a year to maintain.
