Ah, Brussels! The city that manages to combine the allure of history with the happiness of chocolate, making it a top destination for those whose hearts—and stomachs—seek cocoa-infused joy. If you’re a chocolate lover, pack your bags and get ready for a sweet adventure. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you—or perhaps your waistline will quietly plead for mercy.

The Belgian Chocolate Legacy

First things first, let’s talk about the **chocolate legacy** of Belgium. With a history dating back to the 17th century, Belgian chocolates are not just a treat; they’re an art form. From pralines to truffles, chocolate shops have sprouted across every corner like *mushrooms after the rain*. Did you know that Belgium produces around **172,000 tons** of chocolate every year? That’s approximately equivalent to the weight of about 34 elephants—now that’s a heavy-duty chocolate obsession!

Where to Begin Your Chocolate Pilgrimage

If you’re looking to lace up your walking shoes (or, more aptly, your chocolate-eating shoes), start your journey at **Chocolatier Pierre Marcolini**. This luxurious chocolate haven offers an array of treats that will make your heart skip a beat. Picture this: handcrafted pralines that melt in your mouth, and bean-to-bar chocolates of such flavor that they could inspire poetry. Seriously, if you find yourself Sighing the Sweet Sigh of Surrender in front of their chocolate display, don’t fret; it’s a classic case of chocolate love at first sight.

Exploring the Iconic Chocolate Shops

Next on your tour of sweet delights should be **Neuhaus Chocolates**, another iconic name in Belgian chocolate history. Inventors of the praline (the chocolate dream that keeps on giving), Neuhaus has been satisfying cravings since 1857. If you’re thinking of bringing home souvenirs from your trip, their beautifully packaged boxes will make your loved ones appreciate you even more. Why? Because nothing says “I care” quite like a **box of gourmet chocolates** fresh from Brussels. Just remember to save a piece *or two* for yourself—sharing is overrated anyway.

A Culture of Chocolate: Join a Tasting Tour

To truly immerse yourself in the world of chocolate, consider signing up for a **chocolate tasting tour**. These tours offer a combination of education and indulgence, teaching you everything from the art of chocolate making to the finer points of tasting. You might even feel a little fancy holding your glass of hot chocolate while donning a beret and discussing the nuances of dark versus milk chocolate—trust me, it’s a vibe.

Sweeten Your Trip with Chocolate Festivals

When is the best time to visit Brussels if you’re a chocolate fanatic? How about during one of the famous **chocolate festivals**? The Salon du Chocolat is an annual event that’s nothing short of a chocolate lover’s paradise. Imagine *walls* adorned with chocolate sculptures, workshops, tastings, and even shows where chefs whip up delectable creations right before your eyes. It’s like being in Willy Wonka’s factory, minus the Oompa-Loompas—but with a lot more deliciousness!

Pairing Your Chocolate with Local Delights

As fantastic as chocolate is, it’s always better with a few side dishes. Take a break from your sweet adventures to delve into **Belgian waffles** and **frites** (fries, to those of you who may be less inclined to use the exquisite French terminology). Trust me, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve dipped proper Belgian waffles in rich chocolate sauce. It’s life-changing—think *chocolatey miracles* served on a plate!

Finding Balance: Chocolate and Beer

For those who like to add a little bitterness to their sweetness, consider pairing chocolate with **Belgian beer**. Yes, you can have your beer and your chocolate too! This delicious duo tantalizes your taste buds while giving you a sense of balance—because why wouldn’t you want to seek equilibrium between the joy of hops and the ecstasy of cocoa? Many local bars even offer tastings where you can discover unique combinations that will leave you begging for more.

The Grand Finale: Chocolate Workshops

If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get a little messy, then a **chocolate workshop** is a must. Many chocolatiers offer classes that guide you through the process of making your own masterpieces. Imagine creating a praline that, when finished, you can claim as your own (and then devour in self-satisfaction). It’s like being a mad scientist, except with chocolate instead of questionable experiments.

Time to Indulge!

Brussels is not just a city; it’s a chocolate lover’s heavenly **oasis**. With its rich history, delightful chocolate shops, and endless opportunities for indulgence, your palate will rejoice with every bite. So, the next time you’re contemplating a travel destination, remember the city where **chocolate dreams** come true—a place where calories don’t count and a chocolate high is as good as it gets. Just remember to take lots of pictures (and maybe loosen that belt a notch) as you embark on this delectable journey!

The challenge: embark on a comic walk around Brussels with this informative guide + map

There is probably no other city in the world that has as many comic book stores as Brussels. There is also hardly any other city where comic book characters have escaped the pages and scattered themselves around the facades of the buildings in the city center like they do here.

Lift your head up, keeping your hat in your hand, and enjoy Brussels in comics.

The love affair between Brussels and comic books has a long history. The city’s two most famous magazines – Tintin and Spirou – sprang up in the beginning of the 20th century. Some of the most beloved comic books of several generations were created here: The Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Tintin, Gaston Lagaffe…

Brussels, of course, has a comic book museum – the Belgian Comic Strip Centre, where you can learn useful and interesting information. But it is much more inspiring to just walk down the streets of the Belgian capital and get acquainted with your favorite characters in person.

The murals are so well integrated into Brussels’ architecture that you might not even notice them.

Apart from the graffiti on the walls, comic book characters are revived here in 3D form, too. A prime example is the statue of comic book hero Gaston Lagaffe on Pacheco Boulevard.

You can join some of the paid guided bike tours and walks along the comic strip route, but probably the best way to immerse yourself in comic culture is to start your own journey with a map in your hand (a perfect map is available in the bottom of this page) and enjoy your treasure hunt.

To complete a real themed day, finish at the Comic Strip Village (Stripdorp/Le Village de la BD, situated at Sablon Square) in the center of Brussels. Here you’ll find a gallery, a comic book store and a café, where you can have a rest surrounded by colorful comic strips.

You can buy a comic map from any Brussels Tourism Office (costs 1 euro), or alternatively you can take the route provided on this map below:

Pin it for later because you’re gonna need this map and it will get buried in the tons of information online:

Many people underestimate Brussels as a tourist destination. The numerous headquarters of European Union institutions and its frequent mentioning in the news (“Brussels cut the EU funds…”, “Brussels imposed sanctions…”) brand it as a serious and boring place. Belgium’s capital city, however, will really impress you with its enchantingly beautiful center, hundreds of beer styles and brands, mouth-watering meals at the restaurants and street stands, huge comic characters graffiti on buildings facades and its unpretentious atmosphere.

Here are some of the major attractions in Brussels to choose from while making your personal first time visitor’s guidebook. (Аll names in Brussels are in French and Flemish)

Grand Place (La Grand Place/De Grote Markt)

This is the biggest square in the city. Here you will find the Town Hall, built in Gothic style back in 1448. Its tower is 96 m high. There is also the statue of Everard t’Serclaes. The legend has it that rubbing his elbow brings good luck. In the past, the houses were not numbered but rather given names connected to the statues on their facades. That is why every single house around the square has its own name and is a representation of certain craftsmen’s guild. Every two years, in August, a huge flower carpet is arranged at the square.

Atomium

This is a huge metal construction in the form of an iron atom, built for Expo 58, which has turned into a symbol of the city. It is 102 m high. Five out of its nine interconnected spheres shelter scientific exhibitions. You can reach them either by elevator or stairs and up there enjoy the incredible view to the city. More information about entrance fees and working hours is available here.

Atomium in Brussels | Dennis Jarvis

Little Man Pee/Manneken Pis

This is a popular small statue, a symbol of Brussels, which depicts a little boy peeing in a fountain beneath it. You will notice that the boy is dressed in different costumes, which are regularly changed two or three times a week. Nowadays the statue is a replica of the original, which was stolen in 1817. When in Brussels, you must take a photo in front of this statue (located close to the Grand Place, at the crossing of Rue de l Etuve and Rue du Chene). The city also has a statue of a peeing girl (Jeanneken Pis) and a peeing dog (Chien Pis).

Mini-Europe

Take a tour around the entire Europe in just a few hours. Think it s impossible? Not a whit, you can do it at the Mini-Europe Park. It shelters some of the most emblematic landmarks of each EU member state. Here you can see the windmills of Don Quixote, Mount Vesuvius, Big Ben.

Royal Palace of Brussels (Palais Royal)

The original royal palace was destroyed by a fire in 1731. Over the centuries it was reconstructed and renewed. Nowadays, it houses the offices of the King and Queen of Belgium and hosts summit meetings. The palace is open for visitors for a restricted period of time during the summer. The Throne Room, built during the time of Leopold II, with its 11 chandeliers and gold-plated ceilings, is the most impressive room in the building.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris (Basilique de Koekelberg/ Basilique du Sacré-Coeur)

This is the fifth-biggest basilica in the world. It is 89 m high and 167 m wide, built in Art Deco style. You may reach the top of the building using an elevator or climbing up the numerous stairs. The top of the basilica offers an incredible view to the entire city and its vicinity.

Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts)

The exhibitions at the halls are dedicated to different centuries each. Here you can see works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Rubens, Juan de Flandes, Bruegel (father and son), and many other artists of different periods.

Museum of the City of Brussels

The museum is found inside the The King s Household (La Maison du Roi) at Grand Place. The building was restored in Neo-Gothic style.

Charleroi is the city with the second-biggest airport in Belgium. It is very possible that you have passed through it without stopping on your way to Brussels or Liège. Our advice, however, is to drop in for a few hours. Here is why.

5 minutes of history

Charleroi was built in 1666 by the Spaniards and the city was named after Charles II of Spain, who came to the throne when he was only 4 years old and generally his entire reign cannot be remember for anything good. Fortunately, the city was not tainted by his bad fame and it was conquered by the French only a year after. Later on Napoleon himself settled in Charleroi on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo.

Comics

Charleroi is considered the capital city of the Walloon (French) comic books – some of the first Belgian stories in pictures were created here. This explains the fact that you often run into statues of popular cartoon characters here and there in the city. Lucky Luke, for instance, is seen at the entrance to the Reine Astrid Park.

The melody of 47 bells

A minute of patriotism. The beautiful building of the Town Hall has 47 bells, which play the tune of the song “Land of Charleroi – It is you I love best” every hour. We guess that the bells regularly remind the mayor and his employees what they should love the most in their life. The Town Hall is situated on Charles II Square (yes, the same Charles II, who reigned the city for one year when he was 4). The dancing fountains and the Cathedral are found here, too.

4 museums

Charleroi has a Glass Museum, which features both exquisite items of modern times and such that gradually bring you back to the past. The museum is located in Bois du Cazier – an abandoned coal mine where one of the severest incidents in the history of Belgium occurred back in 1956. A fire in the mine killed 262 people, half of whom Italians. The mine is no longer functioning and now it shelters an exhibition dedicated to the fire and the mining industry in Belgium (together with the Glass Museum). You can reach Bois du Cazier (in Marcinelle) by bus No 52 from Charleroi-Sud station or by foot for about 30 minutes.

The Town Hall houses the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts), while the Photography Museum (Musée de la Photographie) is situated on 11 Paul Pastur Avenue.

Cartier Castle

The castle is a beautiful XVII century building, which is perfectly fitting into Charleroi’s urban architecture. The first floor shelters the city library, while the second – the offices of the administrative services of Wallonia (the French-speaking part of Belgium). There is also a nice garden with benches.

Transport

To reach Charleroi from the airport you should take bus A, which will take you to the city in 20 minutes.
