Zanzibar is an island where less is more. When the water is so turquoise that it looks photoshopped, or you just can’t wipe that smile off your face every time you share a ‘Jambo!’ with a local, then you know you are closer to understanding the meaning of life.

Here are some important tips for traveling to Zanzibar:

1. You can get your visa at a Tanzanian consulate prior to arriving, or receive it at any of the following border points:

• Dar es Salaam International Airport
• Zanzibar International Airport
• Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)
• Namanga Entry Point (Tanzania-Kenya boarder point)

2. Consider the seasons before you plan your trip to Zanzibar:

• The dry season or ‘winter’ in Zanzibar is from June to October – the weather is sunny and dry, and the temperature hovers around 25ºC (77ºF)
• The peak rainy season (with long rain storms) – from March to May
• The lesser rainy season (with shorter rain storms) – from November to December or the beginning of January
• The short dry season or ‘summer’ in Zanzibar – January to March

3. What clothes to take to Zanzibar: Take light clothes, but remember to pack long sleeves and trousers/skirts. These are a good idea because Zanzibar is a Muslim state, and you should take care to dress modestly. Another option is to get a large shawl (or kanga as it’s called Zanzibar) to cover your shoulders or wrap around your waist.

4. Every hotel on the island offers more or less the same tours to the best attractions in Zanzibar. If you’re traveling in a group of more than three people (or if you can make friends with other people in your hotel), feel free to negotiate with your tour operator to get a cheaper price.

5. Take the Safari Blue tour if you are into boats, snorkeling, swimming in lagoons, hugging huuuge baobabs, feasting on seafood on the beach or basking on a sand dune in the middle of the ocean. We haggled the price of this tour down to $60 per person, but later we heard that we could have got it for as little as 50$.

6. Visit the house where Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar City. Be warned though, that this is a place for true worshipers, as there is not much to see. The house has been turned into a hotel and there’s only a small sign and a few posters for decoration. After you’ve payed homage to the Queen vocalist, continue to the old part of Zanzibar’s capital, known as Stone Town. Sit down for a cup of coffee on a terrace with an ocean view and you’ll be rewarded with a memorable sunset.

7. The fish market in Zanzibar City is one of the main attractions on the island, but this is no place for the fainthearted. The stench is horrible and some of the sights are hard to swallow (we only recommend swallowing them after they’ve been cooked). If these lines make you cringe, you’d better head to the spice stalls and skip the fish area.

8. Speak with the locals. Those who work in the tourism industry speak English fluently and, more importantly, are very friendly and open-minded. It’s a good idea to take a few small souvenirs from your country and give them to locals you’ve befriended. This is something very few tourists do, and I can assure you it will bring a broad smile to the face of your new friends.

9. What to eat in Zanzibar: Zanzibar is a foodie’s heaven, especially if you like fresh tropical fruit (mango, pineapple, coconuts, passion fruit, etc). Fish and seafood dishes grace menus everywhere and are always delicious, but you might struggle to find proper meals if you don’t eat fish. Local beers typically consist of drinkable lagers, while the wine is usually imported from South Africa and is suitably tasty. I can thoroughly recommend trying a cocktail made of Tanzanian vodka and fresh mango juice.

10. A packing list for Zanzibar:

– water shoes

– antibacterial gel or wet wipes

– mosquito repellent (but double check if it’s specially formulated to ward off tropical mosquitoes)

– beach towels

– snorkeling mask and flippers

– sunscreen with the highest available factor

– sunglasses (according to research, this is one of the most common items for travelers to forget at home)

– enough money in cash, as ATMs are scarce on the island and, due to some sketchy technology, better avoided altogether

– yellow fever vaccine (although this is not obligatory for Zanzibar)

– malaria prevention medication (there are pills you can take in advance)

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. Its name is composed of zengi (the name of the local people) and barr (meaning shore). Back in 1964, the states of Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form one country, Tanzania, whose name is a clipped compound of the two former states.

At Navagio Beach (literally translated as Shipwreck Beach), you will see the remains of a vessel called MV Panagiotis, which washed ashore many years ago. It sunk in 1980, and rumor has it that its freight consisted mainly of contraband cigarettes, although there’s little evidence of that beyond the power of a good urban legend. You can take a peek from the high cliffs above, or reach the shipwreck by boat.

Outside the town of Muynak (or Moynaq) in Uzbekistan, as you head towards the Aral Sea, you will witness a sinister sight along the road: the skeletons of ships and fishing boats abandoned long ago in the desert. Up until about 30 years ago, Muynak was a sea harbor, but today it lies in the middle of the desert – 50 km (30 mi) from the coast – after the rivers were diverted for irrigation purposes. This environmentally dubious piece of policy has turned the road leading to the Aral Sea into a ship graveyard.

Since 1966, Homebush Bay in Sydney has been the final resting place for retired ships whose glory days were during WWI and WWII. Some of them have been swallowed by mangroves, which grow over their rusty decks.

Fun fact: many Sydney-dwellers don’t know about the existence of this shipyard. There’s a point pinned on Google Maps marking the best lookout spot.

USEFUL INFORMATION AND TRAVEL TIPS FOR THE SEYCHELLES

1. The Seychelles is a visa-free country. All foreign visitors are entitled to free entry to the Seychelles. All you need to do to get through passport control is fill in a form and bring a printed hotel reservation and a pre-booked departure ticket.

2. The international airport at Mahe island is located approximately 10 km (6 mi) from Victoria, the capital. Many hotels will organize a shuttle for you. Otherwise, you can take a taxi.

3. Almost everybody speaks three languages: French, English and Creole (the three official languages of the Seychelles). The country was under the rule of France and Great Britain for a long time and, thanks to that, you’ll have no language barrier to contend with. 

4. You can pay in dollars, euro or the local rupee. Euros are preferred at most places, but if you pay in rupees you’ll get better rates. All major global credit and debit cards are safe and easy to use at ATMs.

5. Vacationers stay at hotels, but there are many people who swap their home cities for the Seychelles for a whole season. An apartment with an ocean view in Victoria costs around $1000 per month – enough to make you swap your rented apartment at home for one on the island, so you can wait out the winter in paradise.

6. You have to drive on the left side of the road – consider this if you plan to rent a car.

7. Taxis cost between $3 and $5 per km, but feel free to haggle. 

8. There are public buses that circulate the island. We used them during our stay (with small backpacks only), but we read in online forums that tourists are not allowed on these buses with huge suitcases. You get a ticket from the driver (payable in rupees only and costing ~$0.30-0.40). These old and rickety vehicles are used mainly by the locals and pass regularly. The drivers, however, all seem to be retired Formula 1 champions and tourists often get off dizzy (we did). If you have a stomach of steel, the public buses are a great way to navigate the island for little money. Bus schedules are available here and in all hotels.

9. The northern part of the island is where you will find the best selection of hotels and entertainment and where famous people are often spotted. 

10. One of the reasons so many people love the Seychelles is that the country always has beach weather – the temperature hovers between 24 and 32° C (75 and 89°F) all year round. The humidity is very high and if you accidentally leave the balcony door of your hotel room open, you will find all your clothes soaked. From November to January, the rain is heavy and regular, while May–September is known for being particularly windy.

11. There’s nothing poisonous or dangerous on the islands, which makes it even better than Eden (where they had a sly snake to spoil the party). The only thing to beware of are giant coconuts falling from the palms like cannonballs onto the heads of cocktail-sipping tourists.

This ancient tree (they say it’s been around since the time of dinosaurs) is a symbol of the Seychelles because it grows on only two of its islands: Praslin and Curieuse. The fruit of the male and female Coco de mer (or sea coconut) trees provoke many giggles because they look like the respective human genitals. If you want to take one of these fruits with you, you should obtain a special permit; those who try to smuggle the coconuts out of the Seychelles face imprisonment.

Beaches in the Seychelles

Most hotels have private beaches and swimming pools, but the Seychelles has much more than this. Take a bus or rent a car and stop almost anywhere on the main road circulating the island of Mahe to reach wild beaches with no people (or just a few locals drinking ciders). The water is Photoshop-like blue-green and perfectly clear for snorkeling. Don’t forget your water shoes, because sea urchins lurk in every piece of coral and seaweed.

Talk to the locals

The locals are friendly and talkative, many of them having amazing stories to share. Just a small example is the 25-year-old Ethiopian-born member of staff we met at our hotel, whose name was Gorbachev (yes, like the Soviet leader Gorbachev). He told us the amusing story of the Soviet leader and the American President Reagan visiting the hospital where he and his twin sister were born. His mother was so impressed that she named her children after the prominent guests.

Even if you are not a big garden lover, this destination is worth visiting, if only because of the turtles living here. The Botanical Garden in Victoria is best enjoyed with a leisurely walk among palms, orchids and Coco de mer trees. Your entry ticket costs ~$15 with an additional $3 if you want to feed the turtles (the zookeepers will give you special leaves, which the turtles love).

Food in the Seychelles

Most eateries serve fish and seafood cooked either in Creole style – with lots of spices – or in Italian style. A dinner for two at a restaurant will cost you between $40 and $100, while a burger with French fries from a street caravan for two will cost $20-$30.

The market in Victoria is among the major attractions on Mahe island. Here you can satiate your senses with exotic smells, sights, colors and tastes. Most of the vendors sell vegetables, fish, fruit and ginger.

You will see the name of Takamaka rum all over the island, and besides sipping cocktails prepared with it, you can also visit the mansion where it is produced – La Plaine St Andre, located only 7 km (4 mi) from the airport. You can easily reach it by bus, as there’s a bus stop right in front of the distillery. Join a guided tour (twice a day, at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, $15 per person including a rum-tasting session at the end) to see how the former spice mansion was turned into a rum distillery. You will be even be able to put sugarcane into the machine to create a sweet, fresh juice.

And don’t forget to look up at the sky

If you live in the northern hemisphere, don’t forget to look up at the night sky – it’s so different from the constellations you see at home.

3 reasons to visit gorgeous Krabi:

1. Krabi Province still manages to preserve its nature and beaches, keeping them as unsullied by human influence as possible (especially compared to other locations like Koh Samui or Pattaya). Most of the Thai people here live a normal life unaffected by the tourism industry, and this is your chance to delve into that Thai lifestyle in its most traditional form.

2. There are some surreal, almost unbelievably beautiful beaches in the area (see below).

3. The nearby bay is home to a species of flying fish. Flying fish!

One thing you may not expect in Krabi

Krabi and the south of Thailand as a whole is home to a large Muslim community that has been living peacefully with the Buddhist majority for more than five centuries. You will see many girls and women with their hair covered by scarves, and you might even hear the muezzin call of local mosques. It may be a bit hard to find pork, too.

1. The night market

Like many Thai towns, Krabi has a night market with street food stalls, cheap clothes and plenty of trinkets. With every step, a new whiff tickles your nose and invites you to taste this, and this, and this… Everything is prepared in front of your eyes. In the high season (December–February) you can come across live performances and traditional local festivals. Open: Friday–Sunday.

Special tip: Search for the Krabi fried ice-cream stall, where the very preparation of your dessert is a show in itself.

2. Exchange a book

There are a few second-hand bookshops in Krabi Town, although you can also exchange a book at fairly unexpected places, including fast food venues. Just look for a pile of dusty books in the corner of the restaurant; as well as feeding your body, you can feed your treasure hunt spirit as you search for a book in a language you speak.

3. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)

The Tiger Temple is the historical highlight of Krabi, with its legend of a tiger living in the cave where Buddhist hermits sheltered for years, and the amazing view from its top. Climb the 1000+ steps, try your best to avoid the cheeky monkeys (don’t leave anything on the ground – anything!) and enjoy the fresh wind and the landscape at the top.

How to get to the Tiger Temple: The cave is located a bit out of the city, but it’s easy to get to. You can either take a taxi (500 baht return and the driver will wait for you) or use public transport. Look for the red pick-up vans – songthaew in Thai – that serve as a public shuttle, and take one to get to the temple. Just go to the riverside road, wave one of them down and say you’re going to the Tiger Temple. The rate is 50 baht for foreigners, although locals only pay 20 baht. There’s no need to argue or haggle over the price, as every driver will charge you this amount. Once you get there, the driver might ask you when you plan to return in order to be there and take you back, but you shouldn’t really rely on this promise, as they usually don’t come back. Just take another songthaew home.

4. Kayaking among flying fish in a mangrove forest

Tha Lane Bay is an amazing slice of nature that buzzes with life, and there’s no better way to explore it than to grab a kayak and paddle out into the blue. Your camera is another essential piece of equipment, as you’ll want to photograph the many lovely creatures frolicking about in their unspoiled, natural home. Flying fish are hard to capture in a photo, but simply seeing them leap out of the water with fill your heart with joy (as if you’re in a real-life Super Mario game). If you come at sunset, the tide is low and sand islands emerge from the water, leaving the walking fish and starfish exposed and posing for your camera. Monkeys searching for food also join the party, together with monitor lizards and hundreds of birds. The sunset at Tha Lane Bay is one of the most beautiful in Thailand (trust me, I’ve seen many). Kayaking tours are offered at every hotel in Krabi and always include a transfer to the starting point.

5. Railay Beach

Now this is a beach that looks perfect even without Photoshop. Come here to admire the cliffs, which look as if they’ve been thrown into the water by a giant, then laze on the white sand and glide through the turquoise water. The beach is quite small and tends to get overcrowded during high season.

How to get to Railay Beach: It’s accessible only by boat due to the towering cliffs that surround it. Take a longtail boat from Krabi (Khong Kha pier) or Ao Nang, around 150 baht one direction. This service is available a few times a day between 9 am and 5 pm.

6. Rock climbing at Railay

You can begin your ascent of the coastal cliffs by taking a rock climbing course for beginners (there are several climbing schools, just follow the signs). However, if you’re a bit more experienced, you can embark on an unguided climb that is definitely not for the fainthearted; while at the beach, just look for the miniature red dots that mark out the climbing trails along the cliffs. Bring your own gear or rent some equipment for the day.

7. Ao Nang

Ao Nang is a beach close to Krabi (with a regular bus and songthaew connection between the two towns). It’s a tourist area, full of resorts and bars. The beach is average – nothing like what you’ve seen on Pinterest photos of Thailand – but the area is well-connected as a base for day tours into the surrounding nature.

8. Phi Phi Islands

It takes 45 minutes to get to the six Phi Phi Islands by boat. The scenery made famous by the 2000 movie The Beach is truly amazing and protected as part of a marine national park.

Special tip: The beach gets overcrowded, so the only chance you have to see it without scores of tourists is to arrive very early in the morning. Alternatively, you can spend the night there and wake up before the hordes of day-trippers arrive.

9. Hot springs and the Emerald Pool

These natural hot tubs in the rainforest have been carved into soft rocks and are directly fueled by a thermal spring. Enjoy the ~86ºF (30ºC) salt-rich water and finish with a refreshing dip into the nearby cool stream. The hot springs are located 43 mi (70 km) from Krabi Town. The nearby Emerald Pool is another natural spa where you can swim in warm mineral water and enjoy the serenity of the forest.

10. Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is a piece of wild jungle with the amazing Cheow Lan Lake – where you can spend the night in a floating bungalow – within its borders. Enough said. Oh, and it’s also home to the Rafflesia – the biggest flower in the world.

How to get to Khao Sok National Park: There are several minibuses every day from Krabi and Ao Nang to Khao Sok. The cost is 300 baht and it takes two hours.

11. What NOT to do: don’t ride the elephants

Riding elephants is a widespread attraction all over Thailand, but the only reason for its existence is the fact that tourists pay for it. Elephant riding was recently forbidden in India for a good reason – the conditions the animals are kept in are often awful and the seats used to make tourists more comfortable hurt their backs. Don’t ride elephants and don’t let your friends do it either; as fewer people become interested in elephant riding, Thai people will switch to other business ideas.

Greece has 6,000 islands, of which more than 200 are inhabited. It’s hard to choose your next summer escape, but if you’re a nature lover and enjoy quiet, hidden destinations, give Ammouliani a chance.

Ammouliani is a tiny island located just across from the monastic state of Mount Athos, a short ferry ride from the mainland. It has only one tiny town and a long stretch of sandy beaches interspersed with steep cliffs.

There are several surrounding islets that are perfect for diving, picnics and sunbathing. Since they’re deserted, you’ll feel like you have them all to yourself. You can hire a motor boat or kayaks and visit them, or circumnavigate Ammouliani itself (in half a day kayaking, or less than an hour by motor boat).

The fact that few foreigners visit Ammouliani gives it an ambiance of secrecy and makes it a pleasant alternative to the souvenir stalls and inflated prices synonymous with the most popular Greek islands.

It’s fun to imagine what the island looked like before 1925, when it was a monastic property inhabited by only a couple of monks. They harvested crops, grew olives and herded sheep. In 1925 the island was allocated as a home to refugees from Asia Minor and today it has 600 permanent inhabitants.

Where to stay in Ammouliani

You can choose between a few youth campsites like Alikes and Ammouliani (where the party goes on ’til late and the beach bars serve cheap cocktails to the thumping beat of loud dance music), remote coastal resorts and guesthouses in the township of Ammouliani. There are shops and tavernas everywhere.

How to get to Ammouliani

The closest airport is in Thessaloniki. From there, drive to the coastal town of Tripiti (around 2 hours) then take the ferry to Ammouliani. The ferry takes no more than 20 minutes and there are frequent services throughout the day. You can see the ferry timetable and prices here.

The monastic state of Athos: men only…

If you stay on the east coast of Ammouliani, you’ll be spoiled with the amazing view of the sun rising over Mount Athos (a semi-independent religious state known for its many Orthodox monasteries). When leaving the island, take the ferry from the mainland port of Ouranoupoli to Athos (officially The Monastic State of the Holy Mountain) to see how the monks live. The state has preserved its conservative traditions; only men are allowed to live there. You need a written permit to visit Athos, and you should apply for the permit at least two weeks in advance. It turns out that a women-only island where ladies from all over the world can get together, socialize and take care of their body and soul without any formalities is actually a thing. Hidden away in the Baltic Sea, off the coast of Finland, it’s called SuperShe Island and it is the headquarters of an international women society lead by entrepreneur Kristina Roth.

The island

The 8.4-acre island fitted for ten ladies is home to four newly renovated Nordic-style cabins, spa facilities and green forests where you can pick blueberries. All of this only 90 minutes from Helsinki.

The daily wellness activities include yoga, meditation, farm-to-table dining, cooking classes, fitness classes, nature activities.

“Women need to spend time with other women. Being on vacation with men can be draining and demanding. We want SuperShe Island to be rejuvenating and a safe space where women can reinvent themselves and their desires. A place where you can recalibrate without distractions,” says the founder of SuperShe Island, Kristina Roth.
