Covent Garden, nestled in the heart of London’s West End, is one of the city’s most lively and iconic districts—a place where culture, shopping and performance converge in a way that delights both locals and visitors.

From its 17th-century origins as a bustling fruit and vegetable market, Covent Garden has evolved dramatically. But it hasn’t lost its character — today it merges market traditions with designer boutiques, artful crafts, cafés, theaters and street acts that fill the piazzas with charisma.

Wandering through the cobbled streets and historic piazza, you’ll hear live performances around every corner—magicians, dancers, musicians, acrobats—presenting a free, ever-changing program of street entertainment. The Apple Market, located in the Market Building, remains a central attraction: here artisans and antique dealers sell everything from handcrafted jewelry to rare collectibles.

A highlight of the area is the Royal Opera House, a majestic venue hosting world-class ballet and opera. Aside from attending a performance, visitors can join a guided Royal Opera House tour to see behind the scenes: you’ll learn how productions are staged and discover hidden nooks of this storied institution.

Nearby you’ll find more theatrical delights—Covent Garden supports over 20 theatres around it, from mainstream musicals to fringe productions.

For museum lovers, the London Transport Museum sits right inside Covent Garden. It showcases historic posters, vintage tube and bus models, and interactive exhibits. You need a timed-entry ticket, and annual passes are available: e.g. adult pass ~ £24.50.

As for shopping and dining, you’ll find everything from flagship luxury stores (Tom Ford, Tiffany’s) to independent boutiques in Seven Dials and Neal’s Yard—a hidden, colourful enclave of cafés and artisan shops.

Food options are equally vibrant. Covent Garden is home to acclaimed restaurants such as SUSHISAMBA, Din Tai Fung, Cora Pearl and The Oystermen, as well as charming tea rooms and cozy cafés.

Getting around is convenient: the Covent Garden Underground station (Piccadilly line) is just a short walk away, and several bus routes also serve the area. Because the area is compact and pedestrian-friendly, you can easily stroll to nearby attractions like the British Museum, Leicester Square, or Trafalgar Square.

The district also embraces pop-ups and seasonal events—from Christmas markets to film screenings outdoors—giving it a dynamic, ever-changing energy. Even the Royal Opera House Terrace Bar offers a free vantage point over the Piazza during opening hours, making it a hidden treat for visitors.

What are the best times to visit Covent Garden?

London is a city that thrives on creativity, and nowhere is that more evident than in its bustling streets. As you wander through the city, you’ll encounter a vibrant array of street performers showcasing their extraordinary talents. From the iconic musicians serenading passersby to magicians who will leave you questioning reality, London’s street performers have a knack for turning an ordinary day into a spectacular experience. Grab your wallet, because you might find yourself tossing a few coins into those hats!

The Musical Marvels of London

When you think of London street performers, it’s impossible not to picture the **musicians**. You’ll find them in every corner of the city, from the lively streets of Soho to the historic ambiance of Covent Garden. Talented buskers often belt out familiar tunes or mesmerizing originals that capture the essence of London life.

At Covent Garden, don’t miss the chance to catch a **classical violinist**, perhaps a spirited duo playing classical pieces with a modern twist. They’ll have you tapping your feet as you sip your overpriced coffee from the nearby café. If you venture to the Southbank Centre, you’ll likely stumble upon a **rock band** with a fierce attitude, belting out chart-toppers that could easily rival the show at the O2 Arena, all while keeping it real with just a few amps and their raw talent.

The Magical Charm of Street Magic

Every street corner has its share of **magicians**, and let me tell you, these performers can truly leave you spellbound. Watch as they pull coins from your ear or make a volunteer disappear into thin air—literally! This isn’t just smoke and mirrors; it’s pure, unadulterated entertainment.

One particularly talented magician I encountered near Leicester Square had a knack for making even the most skeptical bystander believe in magic—if only for a moment. As he performed card tricks that left the **audience** gasping in disbelief, it became clear that he was more than just a magician; he was a master of building suspense. If you’re lucky, he might even let you in on a few secrets (but beware, they might cost you a pint or two!).

The Dance of Performance Art

Of course, it’s not all about music and magic; there’s a whole world of **performance art** happening in the streets of London! Artists often transform into larger-than-life characters, showcasing everything from contemporary dance to elaborate living statues.

On any given day, you might spy a **statue performer** covered in silver paint, perfectly still until someone dares to throw a coin into the offering hat. The moment they animate and engage in a dance-off with a spectator, you’ll find yourself cheering louder than you intended, caught up in the thrill of it all.

Then there are the street dancers, who combine athleticism with artistry. Flipping and spinning their way through the crowds, they perform routines that could easily score them a spot on a talent show. Their infectious energy draws people in, creating a spontaneous audience that often erupts into applause—and occasionally, a bit of impromptu dancing of their own.

Captivating Comedy Performances

If laughter is the best medicine, then London has a **prescription** for you. The city’s street comedians bring humor to the cobbled avenues, making light of everything from **public transport** to the quirks of everyday life.

You might watch as a comic dons a ridiculous costume and engages with the crowd in a way that leaves everyone in stitches. They have a special talent for turning venues into impromptu comedy clubs, complete with heckling that feels less like an insult and more like a playful banter with old friends. One standup comedian at **Hyde Park** had a particular knack for roasting tourists. Who knew how much fun watching a guy in a loud Hawaiian shirt could be?

Unique Experiences and Performers Worth Seeking Out

Now that we’ve whetted your appetite for street performances, let’s get specific about some unique experiences.

Have you heard of the **living mural artist**? These talented souls transform blank walls into vibrant masterpieces right before your eyes! Standing there with their brush in hand, they’ll dazzle you as they bring their imagination to life—creating art often inspired by the very streets they inhabit. You’ll witness the magic of transformation: from a dull, gray wall to a colorful reflection of London’s spirit.

Then there’s the occasional **flash mob**. When a group of dancers suddenly breaks into synchronized choreography, it’s not just entertaining; it’s an exhilarating experience! Keep your eyes peeled around the major shopping areas and on the Tube; you just might stumble into one and find your day brightened by spontaneous dance.

Final Thoughts: Tip Generously!

As you explore the streets of London and come across these mesmerizing street performers, remember that they are artists who thrive on your support. Toss a few **pounds** into their hats or buy their CDs—you’ll not only be helping them continue their craft but also enriching your travel experience.

So, the next time you stroll through this magnificent city, take a moment to soak in the vibrant atmosphere that these talented street performers create. Who knows? You might end up discovering your new favorite London memory—one laugh, one cheer, or one surprise act at a time!

Windsor is a charming town just a stone’s throw away from London, making it an ideal spot for a delightful day trip. Nestled along the shimmering banks of the River Thames, Windsor offers a fascinating mix of historic landmarks, picturesque scenery, and even a dash of royal flair. So, grab your most comfortable walking shoes and let’s dive into how to best enjoy a day trip to this splendid destination.

Getting There: The Royal Route

Traveling from London to Windsor is a breeze. Your adventure begins at one of London’s prominent train stations, such as Paddington or Waterloo. The direct train to Windsor & Eton Central whisks you away in about 30 minutes. Is there a fine line between excitement and impatience as you count down the minutes? Absolutely. But fear not, for you’ll be journeying toward one of England’s most enchanting towns.

As you ride the rails, consider this: your train is not just a mode of transport but a cozy little time machine, transporting you from the hustle and bustle of London to the serene and pleadingly quaint charm of Windsor.

Step Into History: Windsor Castle

Once you arrive, your first stop should be the magnificent Windsor Castle. This isn’t just any castle; it’s the largest inhabited castle in the world and has been a royal residence for over 900 years. Not only did the late Queen Elizabeth II call it home, but it was also where her froggy friend, Prince Andrew, famously took the plunge on a *certain* family shopping trip!

Inside, be prepared to be wowed by the State Apartments, which are teeming with art and treasures fit for royalty. The exquisite decor will have you wondering whether you should start looking for your own crown. Don’t forget to peek at St. George’s Chapel, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot in 2018—it’s simply enchanting and a must-see when in town.

Stroll Through the Town: A Touch of Charm

After you’ve had your fill of history and grandeur, it’s time to explore Windsor’s delightful town center. Wander along Peascod Street, where you can indulge in some retail therapy or simply admire the colorful facades of shops that could easily grace the pages of a storybook.

Feeling peckish? Venture into one of the many charming cafés or bakeries. Try the local specialty, Windsor Pudding—a dish so delicious it could make even the Queen consider a second serving! Treat yourself to a classic English afternoon tea, complete with scones and clotted cream. Just be sure to leave the teabag in the tea; you’re on royal territory, after all.

Nature Calls: Walk by the River Thames

No visit would be complete without a leisurely stroll alongside the River Thames. The scenic riverside offers splendid views of the castle and the surrounding greenery. Be on the lookout for the swans; they are truly the celebrities of the Thames. If you’re feeling particularly brave, test your paddle skills with a bit of canoeing or join a riverboat cruise—royalty-style!

If the weather is feeling particularly generous, you might even want to bring along a picnic. Just imagine: a blanket spread out on the grass, the gentle sound of the water, and the sweet taste of your carefully curated snacks. Heaven!

A Royal Detour: Eton College

After you’ve absorbed all the beauty Windsor has to offer, take a short walk across the river to Eton—home to the prestigious **Eton College**. Even if you didn’t attend this world-famous boys’ school, you can still admire its iconic architecture and rich history. Watch out for the students in their delightful black tailcoats and straw boater hats—they might just give you a glimpse into the further heights of British charm.

A stroll through Eton College feels like stepping into a time capsule. The cobbled streets and centuries-old buildings will make you feel like you’ve been transported to a time when scholars roamed freely within the echoing halls of learning.

Evening Delights: Dinner and Drinks

As the sun begins to set and the gentle glow of street lamps illuminates the town, your next challenge is to find a suitable spot for dinner. Windsor and Eton boast a range of eateries that cater to every palate. For a whimsical twist, try a traditional pub meal at one of the local taverns—the fish and chips here come with a side of history!

And if you’re in the mood for something a touch fancier, there are also plenty of upscale restaurants offering a delightful dining experience. Pair your meal with a good British ale or a fine wine as you reminisce about the day’s adventures.

Heading Home: The Royal Return

As your day comes to an end and you board the train back to London, you’ll likely find yourself reminiscing about the enchanting sights and sounds of Windsor. With its royal ambiance, welcoming locals, and historical wonders, a day trip to Windsor has all the elements of a mini-vacation. So, give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back for embracing your inner royal explorer.

Your day trip may be done, but the memories you’ve made—from strolling through ancient corridors to tasting local delights—will remain with you long after you return to the hustle and bustle of the city. Until next time, happy travels!

If you think London is just a playground for tourists and locals alike, think again! Beyond the iconic landmarks and bustling streets lies a treasure trove of quirky, less-traveled spots just waiting to be explored on a delightful day trip. Whether you’re an adventurer, a history buff, or someone looking for an Instagrammable moment, London’s quirky outskirts won’t disappoint. Buckle up your seatbelt, grab your snacks, and let’s dive into some of the most unusual day trips from London.

Rochester: The Enigmatic Castle Town

Just a stone’s throw away from London lies the charming town of Rochester, often overshadowed by its glitzier neighbors. Known for its magnificent castle and the stunning Rochester Cathedral, this place has a rich history that will make you feel like you’ve stepped straight into a Dickens novel. Charles Dickens himself had a connection to this town, and you can even visit the Dickens Centre to celebrate his literary genius—or simply to pretend you’re the star of your own period drama!

Wander through the cobbled streets, lined with tiny antique shops and eateries, where you can treat yourself to a delightful afternoon tea. And if you’re feeling spicy, try the famed Rochester Market where you can find everything from handmade knick-knacks to delicious street food that will have your taste buds dancing.

Bookish Delights and a Dash of History

For the bibliophiles, Rochester is a haven. The historic Rochester Castle offers stunning views and a peek into the past. Climb the winding stairs and imagine defending this fortress during medieval times. It’s like stepping into a medieval video game, minus the dragons (or maybe not, depending on your imagination). Don’t forget to snap a picture because Instagram is waiting for it, my friend!

Windsor: The Royal Twist

When you think of Windsor, the first thing that comes to mind is, of course, the spectacular Windsor Castle. But let’s not stop there. While you could spend a day marveling at the grandeur of the castle and trying to catch a glimpse of the Queen (good luck with that!), there’s so much more to this splendid town.

Stroll around Windsor Great Park, where you can channel your inner royal while basking in the beauty of sprawling gardens and picturesque lakes. It’s a fabulous spot for a leisurely picnic—just try not to mimic the Queen’s secret scone recipe. Can you imagine? The scandal!

A Taste of the Unexpected

For the adventurous eater, Windsor surprises with a slew of eclectic eateries. You can find everything from hearty English fare to innovative international cuisine. Pop into one of the local pubs, where the atmosphere is just as hearty as the dishes served. And if you’re lucky, you might eavesdrop on some cheeky banter among locals, the perfect seasoning for your day!

Brighton: A Feast for the Senses

Ah, Brighton! This coastal gem is not just famous for its pebble beaches and the iconic Brighton Pier but is also a vibrant hub of LGBTQ+ culture, street art, and quirky shops. A whirlwind day trip to Brighton promises an assault on the senses—but in the best way possible. Be prepared for an explosion of flavors, colors, and sounds.

Start your day by grabbing a coffee from a vintage café, complete with mismatched chairs and an eccentric vibe. Then, take a stroll along the seafront, where you can challenge your friends to a game of “who can find the weirdest souvenir.” Spoiler alert: the winner gets to keep it and show it off on their mantelpiece!

Beach Bonanza and Cultural Delights

Don’t forget to explore the Royal Pavilion, an architectural wonder that resembles something out of a fairy tale. Built for King George IV, the extravagance will make you wonder if you accidentally wandered into an opulent dream. After exploring, treat yourself to some rock candy or fish and chips right by the beach. Remember, calories don’t count when you’re on a day trip!

St. Albans: A Historic Sanctuary

If you’re on the hunt for a whiff of history without leaving the comforts of modern-day quirks, St. Albans is your ticket! This market town is rich with ancient stories and is home to the stunning St. Albans Cathedral, which boasts a blend of architecture that can only be described as ‘historically inspiring.’

Wander through the Verulamium Park, where you can pretend you’re a Roman citizen relaxing after a day of commerce. The park also features ruins and a museum, so you can soak in a bit of history after a vigorous game of Frisbee.

Markets and Munchies

Not to be missed is the vibrant St. Albans Farmers Market, held every Sunday. Here you can sample local delights, cheeses, and perhaps come away with a jar of homemade chutney that you absolutely need in your life. And if you’ve not tried a traditional St. Albans sausage roll, have you even lived? That flaky pastry is the stuff dreams are made of!

So hop on a train or bus, grab your travel buddies, and get set for an adventure that’s packed with culture, humor, and some seriously good food. London might be great, but these day trips prove that the quirky, the historical, and the downright delightful await just beyond the city’s borders. Happy exploring!

When it comes to shopping, London is a city that knows how to do it right. With its blend of historical charm and modern flair, you can find everything from high-end brands to quirky boutiques. Whether you’re a seasoned shopaholic or just looking for a leisurely stroll through pedestrian-friendly avenues, London’s shopping streets offer something for everyone. So lace up your walking shoes and prepare for a day of splurging, because we’re about to explore the best shopping streets in the capital of the UK.

Oxford Street: The Crown Jewel of Shopping

Starting off our list is none other than Oxford Street. This vibrant thoroughfare is the heartbeat of London’s shopping scene, boasting over 300 shops and attracting around half a million visitors every single day. It’s the place where dreams of new shoes and trendy outfits come true—or, at the very least, the place where temporary fantasy meets reality. Here, the likes of Topshop, Selfridges, and countless flagship stores stand ready to entice your wallet.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself elbow-to-elbow with tourists snapping pictures and locals hunting for bargains. If the crowd gets too overwhelming, fear not! Just pop into one of the small side streets that branch off from Oxford for a more relaxed shopping experience. You might stumble upon hidden gems that are far more charming than their famous neighbors.

Regent Street: Where History Meets Luxury

If Oxford Street is the bustling underbelly of shopping, then Regent Street is its elegant counterpart. Famous for its stunning architecture and flagship stores, this street has been a shopping destination since the 1820s. You can almost feel the presence of history as you wander its curves, peering into iconic shops like Hamleys, the oldest toy store in the world, or Liberty, known for its stunning Tudor-style building and luxurious goods.

The premium shopping experience continues with brands like Burberry and Apple, where you can touch and feel the latest gadgets while carefully avoiding the disapproving glares of the ‘are you actually going to buy this?’ crowd. And when you need a break from the retail therapy, grab a quick coffee at the charming pavement cafés—a perfect spot for people-watching, though it may yield a new addiction to overpriced lattes.

Bond Street: The Dukes of Discount

For those who fancy their shopping experience with a side of luxury, Bond Street is where it’s at. Known for its high-end boutiques and designer names, this street is a playground for the rich and perhaps not so famous. Here, you’ll find all your favorite luxury brands, including Chanel, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. If your financial advisor hasn’t already had a stern talk with you, consider this your warning.

But wait! Before you start imagining yourself draped in silk scarves, take note of the many art galleries dotting Bond Street. You might just stumble upon a masterpiece or two—unless all you can see are your shopping bags weighing you down. Remember, a weekend spent on Bond Street is what we like to call “retail therapy”—but we might need a subsequent therapy session afterward to deal with the guilt.

Covent Garden: The Casual Chic Spot

Covent Garden offers a more laid-back vibe compared to the high-octane shopping streets. With its cobbled streets and lively atmosphere, you’ll find a delightful mix of shops, cafes, and street performers. Browse through unique boutiques offering everything from handmade jewelry to funky home décor. It’s the perfect spot to pick up quirky gifts for that friend who has everything—or you know, those impulse buys that you’ll hide from your spouse later.

The centerpiece of Covent Garden is the historic market, where you can often stumble upon artisanal goods or local crafts. Just be careful not to trip over a juggler—those guys are way too entertaining for their own good. After a few hours of shopping, head to one of the nearby restaurants for a bite. Trust us, shopping burns calories! At least that’s what we tell ourselves.

King’s Road: Fashion Forward

Last but certainly not least, we have King’s Road, the epitome of chic and hip. This street is the stomping ground for fashionistas and those looking to discover the next big trend. With a mix of established brands and indie boutiques, King’s Road is where you can show off your individual style. The atmosphere here is somewhat posh, so bring your “a-game” attire if you don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed.

Not to be outdone, the cafes and eateries that line this street are worthy of your Instagram feed. Grab a coffee, settle in for some people-watching, or just take a breather before diving back into the chic abyss of shops waiting to take your money. With an evening stroll down King’s Road, you might just realize that there’s no better way to conclude a successful shopping spree.

In conclusion, whether you’re hunting for the latest trends or simply meandering through a bustling market, London’s shopping streets provide an array of experiences that cater to all styles and budgets. So go ahead, indulge yourself, and may your credit card forgive you when all is said and done!

The cities of London and Paris are steeped in history, each boasting its own unique charm that captivates visitors from around the world. These two capitals are not just modern metropolises but are also guardians of rich heritage seen in their historic districts, where the past is preserved and celebrated. The journey between these iconic cities has been made all the more accessible and enjoyable thanks to the Paris to London high-speed trains, seamlessly connecting the heart of France to the soul of England and offering travelers an efficient way to explore the timeless charm of these historic locales.

London’s Historical Tapestry

London, a city with a history that spans over two millennia, is a living museum of architectural marvels, ancient streets, and cultural landmarks. Among its historic districts, the City of London stands out as a testament to the city’s ancient roots. Known as the Square Mile, it was the original Roman settlement of Londinium. Today, it is a financial hub, but the Roman walls, the medieval Guildhall, and the majestic St. Paul’s Cathedral remind visitors of its historical significance. Not far from the hustle and bustle, the cobbled streets of Covent Garden offer a glimpse into the London of the 17th century, with its vibrant market, street performers, and the Royal Opera House.

The Medieval Charm of The City of Westminster

The City of Westminster, another historic district, is home to some of London’s most iconic landmarks. Walking through its streets is like flipping through the pages of a richly illustrated history book. Here, the magnificent Westminster Abbey stands as a symbol of Britain’s monarchical and religious history, having been the coronation church since 1066. Nearby, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben tower over the River Thames, their Gothic Revival architecture dominating the skyline. The area’s royal parks, palaces, and squares paint a picture of the city’s regal past and its ongoing tradition of monarchy.

Paris: The City of Light and Its Historic Heart

Crossing over to Paris, the city’s historic districts exude a romance and elegance that are quintessentially Parisian. Le Marais, with its narrow medieval streets, is one of the most atmospheric. Once the city’s Jewish quarter, it now thrives with boutiques, galleries, and cafes, housed in beautiful 17th-century mansions. The area’s rich history is palpable at every turn, from the Place des Vosges, Paris’s oldest planned square, to the hidden courtyards that offer tranquility away from the city buzz.

The Intellectual and Artistic Soul of The Latin Quarter

The Latin Quarter, on the left bank of the Seine, is another jewel in Paris’s crown. Known as the scholarly heart of the city, it has been a center of learning and intellectual debate since the Middle Ages, home to the Sorbonne and other historic institutions. Its narrow lanes and historic cafes, such as the Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, have long been a meeting place for artists, writers, and philosophers. The Panthéon, with its neoclassical dome, watches over the district, housing the remains of France’s most esteemed citizens and marking the area’s significance in French history and culture.

Southwark: London’s Gateway to History and Innovation

Just across the Thames from the City of London, Southwark presents a fascinating blend of historical depth and contemporary flair. This district, known for the iconic Tower Bridge and the modern Shard, also cradles the ancient Borough Market and the Globe Theatre, a reconstruction of Shakespeare’s playhouse. Southwark serves as a vivid reminder of London’s capacity to nurture its historical roots while embracing modernity. The cobbled streets and the remnants of the medieval Winchester Palace juxtapose strikingly against the backdrop of London’s ever-evolving skyline, offering a unique perspective on the city’s ability to bridge time through architecture.

Montmartre: Paris’s Artistic Summit

In Paris, the hilltop district of Montmartre offers its own historic charm, coupled with an artistic legacy that has attracted painters, writers, and bohemians for centuries. Winding streets lead to the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, whose white domes offer sweeping views over Paris. The area’s artistic soul is most palpable at the Place du Tertre, where artists set up their easels daily, continuing the tradition of the likes of Picasso and Van Gogh. Montmartre’s maze of streets, hidden gardens, and vineyards tell tales of artistic revelry and resistance, capturing the essence of Parisian spirit and resilience. Both Southwark and Montmartre, in their own unique ways, epitomize the seamless weaving of history with the vibrancy of current life, showcasing the enduring allure of London and Paris through their architectural wonders.

Conclusion: A Tale of Two Cities

Exploring the historic districts of London and Paris is to walk in the footsteps of kings, artists, and visionaries. These areas, preserved and cherished, offer a direct link to the past, allowing us to witness the evolution of two great cities and their impact on the world stage. From the Roman foundations of the City of London to the revolutionary spirit of the Latin Quarter in Paris, each district tells a part of the story that has shaped not only these cities but also the broader course of European history. The journey facilitated by high-speed rail between Paris and London is more than a mere transfer from one city to another; it is an invitation to traverse time and culture, celebrating the enduring charm and historic soul of these European capitals.

Before hitting the road, hit the library and grab some books to get you even more excited about the vibrant city of London. Here are a few of the best, from classics to contemporary non-fiction:

The Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

This is not only a literary classic; the stories about the legendary detective are also a great way to travel back to Victorian London. Nowadays a lot of Sherlock Holmes-themed sites are open to visitors in the city, including the Sherlock Holmes museum on 221b Baker Street and Sherlock Holmes Pub (besides being a bar and a restaurant, the pub has a secret – a complete recreation of Holmes and Watson’s study and sitting room with a large collection of objects from the books and adaptations). Organized Sherlock Holmes tours take you to some of the iconic places featured in the books, as well as in the many movie adaptations.

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

A trip to London might be a good reason to re-read this classic if you haven’t done it already or even a better reason to read for the first time. Written in Dickens’ sarcastic style, the novel paints a portrait of London’s society and its problems in the mid 19th century, following the story of the orphan boy Oliver.

This is actually the first book in English literature in which the main character is a child. Over 90 London locations featured in the tale are now yours to explore (check this website for some ideas).

Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Wolf

A novel about one day in the life of Mrs. Dalloway – a high society woman living in post-WWI London. Though the story is technically about the protagonist walking the streets of London in the morning, preparing for a party in the evening, some thought-provoking issues are covered – like depression and mental illnesses, faith and doubt, and existential crisis. Aside from its strong thematic content, this masterpiece is full of London history and paints a literary landscape of the city.

Absolute Beginners by Collin MacInnes

London, 1958. A teenage photographer lives in an attic flat in West London and is determined to turn his last year of adolescence into a “real rave: In the smoky jazz clubs of Soho and the coffee bars of Notting Hill the young and the restless – the absolute beginners – are revolutionising youth culture and forging a new carefree lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll.”

The novel describes the lives of the city’s Caribbean immigrants, poor English people, homosexuals, and drug addicts. It covers the themes of the emerging new youth culture, jazz music, racial tensions and describes the development of what would be later called mod subculture – famous in London in the 1960s.

In 1986, a movie based on the novel was made, with a theme song of the same name by David Bowie. The song would become one of Bowie’s most successful singles.

London: The Biography by Peter Ackroyd

Moving on to some non-fiction books, you can’t miss the ultimate portrayal of London described by Peter Ackroyd in his work London: The Biography. It covers pretty much everything needed to bring the city to live in the reader’s mind: history, fashion, food, and lifestyle.

Londoners by Craig Taylor

Craig Taylor is an English journalist and writer who spent five years exploring London and meeting its citizens to gather the stories of “the days and nights of London now – as told by those who love it, hate it, live it, left it and long for it.” The book consists of more than 80 interviews with people of different occupations, races and social classes, who together create the vivid atmosphere of the city.

Walk the Lines: The London Underground, Overground by Mark Mason

Mark Mason walks the whole length of the London Underground and shares everything he comes across on the way through all the stations – curious facts, insight information, interesting conversations and different points of view. Because “the only way to truly discover a city, they say, is on foot”.

Commuting and the City – the lesser-known sequel to the famous franchise, where Carrie went to London, missed the Tube and had to get a Boris bike… Okay, maybe not. We do, however, have a keen interest in city living. Whether we like it or not, a huge part of that is the daily commute or travelling around the city in general.

If you’re new to London, whether you’re moving there or just visiting, here are all the wonderful ways you can travel around the city:

Cycle Around the City

With low-emissions travel high on the agenda for many city dwellers, bicycle hire schemes are now more popular than ever. In London, you can hire Santander cycles for as little as £2 a day simply by picking it up from a docking station. This is perfect for an occasional visitor to the city as it’s a great way to travel to see the sights.

However, those who do the daily commute may prefer something more convenient. You may see people around the office or in public spots carrying bags bearing the name Brompton. Well, these bags hold compact folding bikes that are specifically designed for city living! They’re small and practical, light enough to be taken into homes, offices and bars when folded. Plus, they’re fully customisable to suit all your commuting needs.

Soar Above London in a Cable Car

For a form of travel that’s completely different, you can choose to travel across London by Emirates Air Line, which is a cable car link across the River Thames. You can use it as transport across the river, or simply hop on and enjoy the completely unique views that you’d never experience from a bus or a taxi.

The 1km line crosses from the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Victoria Dock. So, if you’re heading to a convention at ExCel London, why not take the scenic route and admire the breath-taking views over the city? And if we still haven’t won you over… You can even use your Oyster card for a discount fare!

Hop on the Thames Fleet

London is famous for it’s river, so why not travel through London on the Thames! Tourists can book onto hop-on, hop-off River Roamers – a high speed fleet that takes passengers around all of London’s best sights. You can hop off at any of the 17 piers including London Eye, Westminster, North Greenwich and Battersea Power Station. If you’re looking for a way to mix it up on your daily commute, what better way to do that then sail through the iconic Tower Bridge on your way to work?

MBNA Thames Clippers have a number of routes on the River Thames too, whether you’re heading for a day out at Tate Modern or you need to travel between Putney and Blackfriars, or you have a meeting at Canary Wharf.
