When you wander into the narrow, bustling laneways of Melbourne, you’re stepping into a vibrant urban tapestry where food, culture, and community merge. The city’s laneways have become living rooms for both locals and travellers — reviving forgotten alleys with cafés, restaurants and street art that reflect Melbourne’s multicultural heartbeat.

From the early 2000s onwards, lanes that once stood quiet have been transformed into gastronomic hotspots. These hidden passages now buzz with energy, as diners explore an eclectic array of international cuisines, beloved café culture, and open-air seating that invites connection and spontaneity.

In places like Degraves Street, you’ll find cosy European-style cafés serving exceptional coffee and pastries under café umbrellas and heaters, while over on Hardware Lane, the mood shifts to a lively Italian/Asian fusion dining scene, framed by red-brick paving and buzzing with outdoor tables under the city lights.

But it’s not just about eating—it’s about immersing yourself. Street art colours the walls, baristas craft coffee with pride, and chefs draw from local produce and global inspiration. Many eateries now lean into sustainable practices, offering vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and organic alternatives to cater to changing tastes.

Each laneway tells a story of creativity and authenticity—of small business owners staking out their niche and crafting experiences beyond the dish. Whether you’re sipping rose-toned gelato down one lane or choosing vegan tapas in another, you are part of Melbourne’s forward-looking food scene.

As the city evolves, so do its lanes. The future points to an even stronger blend of health-conscious cuisine, innovative techniques, and expanded outdoor dining. The pandemic nudged many businesses to embrace take-away models and al-fresco setups—but those changes only enriched the laneway vibe.

What are some iconic dishes to try in Melbourne’s laneways?

When exploring Melbourne’s laneways, don’t miss dishes like the classic Melbourne brunch, unique Australian pies, or Asian fusion tacos which beautifully echo the city’s multicultural influences.

How has the pandemic affected Melbourne’s laneway dining?

The pandemic prompted many restaurants to pivot towards takeout and outdoor dining, leading to a resurgence in pedestrian-friendly street spaces and innovative service models.

What initiatives support sustainability in Melbourne’s food scene?

Many laneway restaurants emphasize sourcing local ingredients and implementing waste-reduction strategies, which align with a growing trend towards sustainability in Melbourne’s culinary sector.

Summary

Melbourne’s laneway dining culture is a defined concept: visitors are encouraged to turn off main streets and explore smaller lanes with cafés, restaurants and bars tucked away upstairs, downstairs and behind unmarked doors.

Degraves Street is officially recognised as a short, pedestrian laneway in Melbourne’s CBD, running from Flinders Street to Flinders Lane, famous for alfresco dining, café culture and street art.

Hardware Lane runs roughly north–south between Bourke Street and Little Lonsdale Street and is especially known for its restaurants, cafés and European-style laneway atmosphere.

Degraves Street and Hardware Lane both feature a strong outdoor dining ambience, café culture and diverse dining options.

Sustainability and dietary diversity (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free) are explicitly noted as active trends within Melbourne’s laneway dining scene.

Melbourne, Australia, is widely recognised for its dynamic arts and café scene—but it also boasts spectacular natural escapes just a short drive from the city. Whether you’re an enthusiastic hiker or simply looking for a serene nature fix, the region around Melbourne offers a rich variety of hiking routes that comfortably cater to both beginners and seasoned walkers.

One of the standout options is the lush, leafy Dandenong Ranges National Park. Among its many trails is the famed Kokoda Track Memorial Walk (1000 Steps)—a steep climb that’s rewarding not just for the workout but also for its history and panoramic views. The route winds through rainforest gullies, rises through steps and plaques honouring Australian soldiers, and emerges up high enough for glimpses of Melbourne through the trees.

Then there’s the expansive and varied Yarra Ranges National Park. Here you’ll find hikes through ancient forests, beside rivers, down lush valleys and even relaxing strolls for families. A particularly family-friendly highlight is the scenic Maroondah Reservoir Park—perfect for picnic breaks, shorter walks and enjoying nature at a gentler pace.

For those drawn to the sea, the stunning Mornington Peninsula offers coastal hikes with dramatic cliffs, surf beaches, sweeping ocean vistas and easy access from Melbourne. One such route extends from Cape Schanck to Point Nepean—a trek through coast-line scrub, rock shelves and sea-spray views where land meets water in dramatic fashion.

Why do people flock to these areas? Beyond the obvious scenic beauty, there’s something deeply restorative about walking in nature: the chance to step away from the buzz of city life, to breathe deeply, move your body and let your mind wander. Hiking becomes a form of active meditation.
Of course, safety and preparation matter—especially when tackling steeper terrain or more remote trails. Come equipped with appropriate clothing, enough water and snacks, and check the weather and trail conditions in advance. And as the popularity of outdoor activities grows, local parks are responding with improved signage, rest areas and infrastructure—making it easier and safer for all to enjoy.

The good news? With Melbourne’s surrounding environment so rich and varied, you can revisit in every season and find something new. Whether it’s a spring wildflower walk, a winter rainforest mist climb or a summer coastal dawn-hike, nature is ready.

What is the best time to hike in Melbourne’s surroundings?

The best time for hiking around Melbourne is during the spring and autumn months when temperatures are mild, and the landscapes are vibrant with flora.

Are there beginner-friendly hiking trails available?

Yes, many trails such as those in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges offer beginner-friendly options that are safe and scenic.

How can I stay safe while hiking in these areas?

Always plan ahead by checking trail conditions, bringing sufficient water and snacks, and ensuring you have proper gear. It’s also wise to hike with a partner when possible.

Melbourne is a city where graffiti is an art form, not just an act of rebellion. If you’re wandering through the laneways and alleys, you might feel like you’ve stepped into an open-air gallery, where every wall tells a different story. From thought-provoking political messages to vibrant murals that make you smile, the street art scene in Melbourne is as diverse as its inhabitants. So grab your camera and let’s dive into this **colorful world**!

The Birth of Melbourne’s Street Art Culture

Street art in Melbourne began to gain prominence in the late 1990s, fueled by a mix of creativity and a vibrant **community spirit**. As the city embraced its eclectic vibe, walls that once stood blank and boring started to bloom with color and personality. The laneways became the perfect canvas for aspiring artists, fueled by a desire to share their vision with the public—without the pomp and circumstance of a gallery.

The Laneways: A Treasure Trove of Art

You can’t talk about Melbourne’s street art without mentioning its iconic laneways. Places like **Hosier Lane** and **ACDC Lane** have become pilgrimage sites for art lovers and tourists alike. As you stroll through these alleys, you’ll discover murals that range from the awe-inspiring to the downright quirky.

One can’t miss the enormous **portrait of a woman** on the wall of a building in Hosier Lane, painted in such intricate detail that you might find yourself questioning whether it’s a mural or a real person just taking a break. Often, these murals are temporary, changing with the seasons and the artists’ whims, creating a dynamic landscape that keeps even frequent visitors on their toes.

The Artists Behind the Magic

Many of Melbourne’s street artists are self-taught eccentrics, bringing a unique flair to their work. You’ll find names like **Rone**, known for his stunning, large-scale portraits, and **Dvate**, whose intricate designs blur the lines between graffiti and traditional art. These artists often tackle themes of identity, social issues, and local culture, adding depth to the vibrant visuals on Melbourne’s streets.

But beware! One common sight on the streets comes with a quirky vibe—a cheeky little bird (often accompanied by a **wu-tang symbol**) can sometimes become the town’s unofficial mascot, making its appearance all over the city. Legend has it that spotting this bird is a sign of good luck, so keep your eyes peeled!

The Evolution of Street Art Regulations

While street art thrives in Melbourne, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. The **line between art and vandalism** can often get blurry, leading city officials to impose regulations. In the past, street artists faced fines and legal trouble, but Melbourne has gradually begun to celebrate this form of expression.

In recent years, the city has introduced designated areas and organized projects that encourage artists to showcase their talents legally. So, if you’re a budding Banksy in training, you now have the chance to express yourself without worrying about a hefty fine ruining your day.

Street Art Tours: Getting the Inside Scoop

If you want to immerse yourself in the backstory of the artworks while stretching your legs, consider taking a street art tour. Several companies offer guided walks through the lanes, led by locals who can regale you with fascinating tales of various artists and pieces.

You’ll learn about the hidden meanings behind certain works, the significance of different styles, and even some juicy gossip about local art happenings. Plus, you might stumble upon some secret spots that you wouldn’t find on your own—talk about an insider’s advantage!

The Future of Street Art in Melbourne

As with any thriving art scene, the future of street art in Melbourne looks promising. With increasing support from the community and local government, artists continue to find new avenues for expression. Festivals like the **Melbourne Street Art Festival** highlight the talent within the city while bringing attention to important social issues.

Moreover, as an added bonus, the blend of **technology and street art** is leading to exciting new creative outlets. Augmented reality apps are making it possible for fans to interact with the art in innovative ways, adding a high-tech twist to this age-old medium.

Finding Your Own Artistic Inspiration

Even if you’re not an artist yourself, Melbourne’s street art is sure to spark some creativity within you. Spend a day exploring the city with your camera in hand, capturing everything from the tiniest tags to massive murals. The **vibrancy of the street art scene** will leave you feeling invigorated, encouraged to see the world through a more colorful lens.

So whether you’re visiting for the culture, the food, or just a fun weekend getaway, don’t forget to take the time to explore the ever-changing art around you. You never know; you might just find a snippet of inspiration that fuels your next creative project.

In the end, Melbourne’s streets are more than mere roads—they are a testament to a community that thrives on creativity, resilience, and the occasional cheeky sense of humor. So go ahead, get lost in those lanes, and embrace the artistic spirit of this beautiful city!

Melbourne is often touted as the coffee capital of Australia, and for good reason. As you stroll through its bustling streets, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafts through the air, beckoning you to explore the city’s vibrant café culture. But while the well-known establishments are certainly worth a visit, hidden gems lie in the nooks and crannies of this delightful metropolis, waiting to be discovered by those willing to venture off the beaten path. Let’s embark on a caffeinated adventure through Melbourne’s less-celebrated yet equally enchanting coffee shops.

Finding Your Way to Caffeine Bliss

First things first—put on your **adventurer’s hat** and be ready to take a scenic route. Many of Melbourne’s lesser-known coffee spots hide in laneways, tucked away behind larger buildings or obscured by larger chains. So, channel your inner explorer and wander into some of these elusive locations. You may be surprised by what you find!

1. The Hardware Société

Located in the hidden clutches of the CBD, The Hardware Société is a charming café that’s a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. This delightful spot has a French influence, serving up creamy lattes and pastries that could make even the most dedicated dieter pause for a moment of weakness. You can’t visit without trying their **signature baked eggs**, a dish that has been the talk of the town—seriously, locals have been known to fight over the last spoonful!

Whimsical décor adds to its charm; think vintage light bulbs and mismatched chairs that make you feel right at home. Just be ready for a little wait during peak hours; the secret’s out, and it’s a favorite!

2. Little Rebel Coffee

Sneaking through the streets of Brunswick, **Little Rebel Coffee** is a hidden treasure that embraces the alternative and the eclectic. With an inviting, artsy vibe enhanced by local artwork, you’ll feel as though you’ve stumbled into a coffee utopia. This place serves an array of blends sourced from fair-trade providers, ensuring your conscious consumerism can coexist with your caffeine addiction.

The staff here are ridiculously friendly and can talk you through their selection like it’s the lore of a beloved novel. Be sure to ask for their recommendations and get ready to be immersed in coffee culture. Their cold brews have a cult following that you definitely want to be a part of.

Take a Break, and Grab a Snack!

As you sip on your coffee, don’t forget to sample the delicious bites on offer. Melbourne is well-known for its food scene, and hidden coffee shops often pack a culinary punch. Sandwiches, pastries, and even gourmet toast can be found accompanying your brew, transforming your café experience into a full-fledged **gastronomic adventure**.

3. A Minor Place

Not too far from the vibrant community of Northcote, you’ll find A Minor Place. This café strikes the perfect balance between art and flavour. The baristas are practically **coffee wizards**, conjuring lattes that look like they’ve just come out of a barista competition. Seriously, you might feel guilty drinking them—they’re that picture-perfect!

The cozy atmosphere is punctuated with wooden accents and plants, creating a relaxing space for both work and chill time. It’s the kind of café where you could settle in with your laptop, sip on a delicious flat white, and pretend you’re being productive while actually scrolling through your Instagram feed.

4. The Grub Food Van

For something a little different, check out The Grub Food Van. This café takes the concept of coffee to the streets, literally! You’ll find its vibrant yellow van parked around various locations, brewing café-quality drinks right from the curb. The **ambiance** is buzzing, and their coffee is top-notch, crafted with beans sourced from sustainable farms. You can almost taste the passion and dedication that goes into every cup.

Don’t miss out on their famous banana bread; it’s the perfect pairing for that early morning pick-me-up or afternoon snack. The Grub crew is all about community, so grab a seat at their picnic tables and strike up a conversation with fellow coffee lovers.

Conclusion: The Coffee Journey Awaits

Melbourne is so much more than just its mainstream coffee shops. While places like Brunetti’s or St. Ali often grab the spotlight, the city’s hidden coffee shops offer unique experiences that celebrate Melbourne’s rich café culture. So, next time you’re wandering the city, let the irresistible scent of freshly brewed coffee guide you to these hidden gems. In a city that takes its **coffee seriously**, you’ll find that stepping off the beaten path is the best way to enjoy an unforgettable cup—and perhaps even meet some fascinating folk along the way.

So what are you waiting for? Put on your walking shoes, grab your sense of adventure, and get ready to sip your way through Melbourne like a true local!

Melbourne, Australia—a city that’s as vibrant as a Sunday brunch menu and as eclectic as its famous laneways. If you’re a solo traveler looking for the perfect destination to explore without the hassle of coordinating with anyone else’s schedule, look no further. With its charming cafes, rich culture, and numerous activities, Melbourne makes even the loneliest wanderer feel like they’ve found a lifelong friend. So let’s dive into why Melbourne is the perfect playground for solo adventurers.

Explore the Vibrant Laneways

One of the first things you’ll notice in Melbourne is its network of hidden laneways. These narrow streets are brimming with street art, quirky cafes, and boutique shops that you simply can’t miss. Think of them as the secret veins of the city, pumping life and creativity into the atmosphere. Grab a flat white (or whatever your caffeine of choice may be) and prepare for a treasure hunt of artworks and unique finds. It’s ideal for solo travelers since you can wander at your own pace and even stop for an impromptu photo shoot—because what’s the point of traveling alone if you don’t have a stockpile of Instagram-worthy shots?

Indulge in Culinary Delights

Speaking of cafes, Melbourne’s food scene is nothing short of legendary. From brunching like a local with smashed avocado toast to devouring authentic Italian pastries in one of the many hidden bakeries, your taste buds are in for a treat. Being a solo traveler gives you the ultimate freedom to indulge in any cuisine you fancy without having to compromise. Want Thai food on a Tuesday and French pastries on a Friday? Go for it!

Particularly, join a food tour. There are countless options available that cater to different tastes, whether you prefer street food, fine dining, or something in between. A food tour can also be a fantastic way to meet fellow travelers or locals, especially if you find yourself seated at a communal table, sharing stories over the sublime flavors of Melbourne.

Visit Iconic Landmarks

While it might feel daunting to explore a city alone, Melbourne is home to some truly iconic landmarks that are incredibly easy to navigate. First up, the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens. Here, you can stroll through lush landscapes, stop for a picnic, or simply sit back and soak in the serenity. As you wander, keep an eye out for friendly ducks; they make excellent companions for those quiet moments.

Cultural Corners

If culture is your jam, then Melbourne has got you covered. From the National Gallery of Victoria to the Melbourne Museum, there’s no shortage of enriching experiences. Even if you’re not a major art buff, you might appreciate the eclectic collections or the architecture of these buildings. And if you happen to find yourself in the mood for a theatrical performance or live gig, check out the schedule—there’s always something happening in the city. After all, laughter sometimes is the best company when traveling solo!

Meet New Friends

In a city buzzing with exciting events and cultural happenings, meeting new people is as easy as pie (or is it pavlova down under?). There are numerous hostels and community events designed to foster friendships among solo travelers. Whether you join a trivia night, a yoga class, or an art workshop, you’ll likely find someone who’s just as keen to make a connection. Not to mention, sharing an experience—especially a memorable one—can lead to lasting friendships, or at the very least, a few added followers on social media.

Local Markets

No solo trip to Melbourne would be complete without visiting one of its famous markets. The Queen Victoria Market is a must-see. Here, you can wander through stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. Taste testing is highly encouraged, and you’ll leave with snacks that are both delicious and memorable. Don’t forget to chat with the vendors; they often have fascinating stories about their goods—and sometimes, the locals know where all the best hidden spots are!

Outdoor Adventures

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, the outskirts of the city offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor escapades. Take a day trip to Great Ocean Road and bask in the stunning coastal views, or head towards the Yarra Valley for wine tasting. Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate the numerous trails available, where you can soak in nature and clear your mind. And yes, taking a picture of a kookaburra perched on a branch is obligatory, even if you’re on your own!

Transit and Ease of Travel

One of the best parts about being a solo traveler in Melbourne is the city’s public transport system. The tram network is extensive and relatively easy to navigate, with trams that feel more like a social gathering than mere transportation. Plus, you can hop on and off at all the major attractions, giving you the ultimate flexibility. Just remember to keep your Myki card handy—forgetting it can lead to unexpected awkward moments at the ticket machine!

In conclusion, Melbourne stands out as a haven for solo travelers. From the bustling laneways filled with artistic flair to tranquil gardens that invite peaceful reflection, this Australian gem has it all. So pack your bags, grab your camera, and set your sights on Melbourne, where every solo adventurer can feel a little less alone and a lot more inspired.

Life is that much better when you’ve got a special someone to share it with. Romance can make your head swim, your tummy flutter and your heart beat faster. Humans are social creatures, and it’s our instinct to settle down with someone and partner for life. So if you’ve found that special someone, you should cherish them, celebrate them, and make falling in love over and over again a priority.

And nothing will cement a romance more than a romantic weekend trip away, and Melbourne is just the city to visit for a lover’s getaway. It is a city that has been voted amongst the world’s most ten liveable cities. Still, it’s just as enjoyable for a weekend visit. But Melbourne is a big place, with many things to see and do. You might be planning a trip here but find yourself at a loss about where to go and what to visit. Lucky for you, this helpful article will share what to see and do on a romantic weekend trip. Read on to discover more.

Book a Luxury Hotel

Your first step will be to find hotels in Melbourne. This will be your home base and a place you can return to late at night after a date to unwind and enjoy each other’s company. Staying in a luxurious hotel during your romantic weekend trip is just the ticket. You can enjoy a bath, pop a bottle of bubbly and unwind in extravagant glory. There are plenty of five-star hotels in Melbourne, so you’ll be spoiled for choice. Ideally, you’ll want to stay somewhere central, preferably in the CBD, close to some of the locations we’ll discuss in this article.

A hotel of choice in this city is the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. You’ll be treated like royalty by the attentive staff, enjoy your relaxation in a suite, and have a little love nest you can luxuriate in while you’re away.

Lunch and a Stroll in St Kilda

St Kilda is an iconic Melbourne destination, an affluent seaside suburb packed with great places to eat, bars to imbibe some refreshing drinks, and a beautiful beach to walk along. As part of your romantic getaway, you can catch a quick tram ride down to St Kilda, dine at your choice of restaurants for lunch and then enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach. Before heading home, grab an ice cream or gelato and a refreshing cup of coffee along Acland Street.

Browse the NGV and Fed Square Art Galleries

A perfect romantic adventure, you can head into the city, hopefully not far from your hotel, and browse the National Gallery of Victoria and the Federation Square galleries. The NGV is home to various art, from modern to classics, and will make for an enlightening date. If you’re lucky to be in Melbourne during a particular exhibition, you could even see some of the work of a famous artist.

Have a Picnic at the Royal Botanical Gardens

Depending on the weather, this could be an excellent romantic activity. Pack yourself a picnic basket filled with cheese, dips, bread, cured meats and fruit, and add a bottle of wine or bubbles to accompany it. The Royal Botanical Gardens are a short walk or tram ride from Melbourne’s CBD. The gardens are large enough that you’ll be able to find a secluded spot where you can sit down, feast and enjoy each other’s company.

Catch a Stunning View from the Skydeck

Located in Melbourne’s CBD, the Skydeck is at the top of the Eureka Tower and offers unparalleled cityscape views. There is a glass cube that you can walk into and take in the scenic views beneath your feet. The venue also offers cocktail and dinner packages, so you can turn this into a date night to remember.

Go on a River Cruise

The Yarra river runs throughout Melbourne, and you can take a cruise along it during the day, enjoying the warm sunshine reflecting off the waters. An evening cruise is also a great option, and you can see the city come to life as a million lights flicker on as the sun sets.

To make this a genuinely intimate event, charter a private boat, pack a basket with nibbles and drinks and enjoy the romantic atmosphere with your lover.

A Romantic Escape Awaits

This helpful article has shared what you can see and do on a romantic weekend trip to Melbourne. This is by no means an exhaustive list; you can see plenty of other activities and sights within Melbourne’s CBD or in the inner-city suburbs. You may want to take a spontaneous tram ride and see what you discover or even head out to some wineries in the country. Enjoy your time together in Melbourne, and return home full of love and gratitude.

The best way to explore Melbourne is to combine its most famous sites with the secret places only locals can show you. For the second part, let our local guide – Nick Johns-Wickberg – show you his favorite places.

The first place I’ll take you in Melbourne is… to the MCG, for an Australian football match. It’s not soccer, it’s not rugby and it’s not American football; it’s simply the best game is the world, and you’ll have to watch it to understand it. The atmosphere at the ‘G during a good game is something special.

Few people know that Melbourne… was called Batmania for a while. Seriously. We also have Batman Avenue, named after the same guy – John Batman. Whoever changed the city’s name to Melbourne should be ashamed of themselves!

When I want a little peace I go to… one of Melbourne’s many beautiful parks. Even in the middle of the city you can find a green oasis to help you recharge during your lunch break.

Carlton Gardens on the northeastern edge of the Melbourne CBD | © Visit Victoria

If you taste only one local dish, it should be… a barbeque cooked on a sunny day in a suburban backyard, one that has a Hill’s Hoist clothesline and a corrugated iron fence. It’s not about the food; it’s all about the classic Aussie atmosphere.

If you come to Melbourne, make sure you take a photo with… the Yarra River and the city skyline in the background.

You can tell that somebody is from Melbourne by… the way their shirt matches their hairstyle and their moustache. Tattoos, skinny jeans and thick-rimmed glasses are also signs that the person is a hipst- sorry, Melbournian…

The residents of Melbourne would never… admit that your city’s coffee is as good as theirs. Because it just isn’t. Sorry.

When I want to escape the crowds I go… anywhere in country Victoria. The area around Melbourne is so big and spacious that you can find peace and quiet pretty much wherever you go.

In spring you should… expect the unexpected. According to the famous saying, Melbourne weather gives you four seasons in one day, and spring is the most unpredictable time of the year.

In summer you should… wear sunscreen!

In autumn you should… check out the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. For nearly a month, you can find up to 100 comedy shows every night, all across for the city. Shows range from free local acts to gala performances by the world’s most famous comedians. It’s genuinely one of the best things in the world.

In winter you should… go to a footy match at the MCG!

The best day trip from Melbourne is… down the Great Ocean Road, which starts about two hours west of the city. The coastline is spectacular and you can do the drive over several days if you have the time.

Getting a public holiday because of a horse race (the Melbourne Cup)… is classic Melbourne.

If I wanted a beer, I’d go… to one of about 1000 places. Melbourne has way too many cool bars to choose from. I’ll go with Naked in the Sky on Brunswick St for its combination of tasty beer, cheap food and awesome views.

The view from Naked In The Sky | © Visit Victoria

If I wanted coffee and sweets, I’d go… anywhere in the inner-northern suburbs. We have such a strong café culture and there are so many interesting coffee shops – literally thousands in the city – that to single one out would be unfair. Brunswick St, Sydney Rd, High St and Lygon St are some of the best-known coffee strips.

Road tripping is one of the best ways to explore Australia, as it allows you to see the many different faces of the country. When a bunch of Europeans head on an almost month-long road trip in Australia, culture shock and unexpected situations are par for the course (along with plenty of huggable koalas and deadly jellyfish). After completing such a trip in December and January 2018, we’ve decided to list a few useful tips to help you better prepare for your own Aussie adventure.

#1 Australians drive on the left side of the road. If you are used to driving on the other side, you may need some time to get used to this change. If you prefer camping – check Camper Champ, traveling in a motorhome is one of the best ways to travel.

#2 If you plan to visit Melbourne (and you should!), even if it’s summer, pack clothes for all types of weather, from early spring showers to baking summer sun, as the weather tends to change suddenly. It’s not a coincidence that they say: “If you don’t like the weather in Melbourne, just wait for ten minutes.”

#3 Trying to drive the Great Ocean Road in a day is crazy and draining – it’s worth spending a night or two along the way to fully immerse yourself in the amazing scenery. That’s why you should consider getting an aluminum roof top tent so that you’ll have no problems when the weather is changing.

#4 If you travel over the Christmas holidays, keep in mind that two days before and after Christmas and New Year’s Eve almost no shops are open, so stock up on food. Also, check the opening hours of local restaurants if you plan to dine out.

#5 If you want to hire a kayak, surfing equipment etc., you should usually get and return it between 9 am and 5 pm. It turned out that finding a rental kayak for a sunset tour was not an easy feat. It’s also important to call up at least one week in advance, especially in the high season, as you may find everything has been pre-booked.

#6 If you want to see kangaroos, koalas, wombats and penguins parading at sunset and other exotic (at least to foreigners) animals in their natural habitat, plan a trip to Phillip Island.

Philip Island, Australia | © www.203challenges.com

#7 For a chance to see and feed possums, head to Kalimna Woods Cottages at Lake’s Entrance.

#8 If you have included the Blue Mountains National Park in your itinerary, here is a useful tip to skip the crowds: choose a trail other than the Three Sisters Walk. All trails offer the same views but the Three Sisters Walk is the most overloaded with human traffic.

Blue Mountains, Australia | ©www.203challenges.com

#9 A stop in Sydney always includes a scenic view of the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House (and of the New Year’s fireworks above them if you have planned your visit to coincide with this major celebration). The best views are from Taronga Zoo, Kurraba Point or Robertsons Point. Some people arrive at these viewpoints hours in advance to spend the whole New Year’s Eve there, but you can also arrive at the last minute and it will still be easy to find a good vantage spot.

#10 In every single AirBnB we rented, there were cockroaches, every time getting bigger and bigger. It’s a good idea to buy some anti-cockroach spray if you can’t stand the sight of a huge bug on your wall.

#11 Include a stopover at Byron Bay – a coastal town full of people from all over the world who have come here to make their dreams come true. It’s a lively and inspiring place famed for its hippy, alternative atmosphere and beaches that are perfect for surfing.

#12 Always read the signs on the beach carefully because they tell you if there are jellyfish or anything dangerous/poisonous in the water. If you see a picture-perfect beach with nobody in the water, always suspect that there may be a sign you have missed.

#13 If you are a cruise lover ready to see the Great Barrier Reef, you can book a two- or three-day sea tour in Cairns, where you actually spend the night on a ship and enjoy diving three times a day, including night diving. If you are restricted by time, you can go diving on a single-day tour, too. Although Cairns is most famous for its surfing spots, don’t miss Kuranda Rainforest Village only 25 km (15 mi) from Cairns (and don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent and plenty of water).
