Central Park is a sprawling urban oasis located in the heart of Manhattan, offering a serene escape from the bustling city. Every year, millions flock to this iconic park, seeking recreational activities, beautiful landscapes, and cultural experiences. This article explores the quintessential things to do in Central Park, highlighting the best spots for visitors to enjoy.

The history of Central Park dates back to the mid-19th century when it was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. They envisioned a green space that would provide a peaceful refuge for New Yorkers amidst the rapidly growing urban environment. Today, the park spans 843 acres and features a mix of rolling hills, woodlands, and open meadows, making it a favorite among both locals and tourists.

Among the most popular attractions is the Central Park Zoo. This well-maintained zoo houses a range of animals from different regions, including the famous sea lions and the adorable penguins. The zoo’s interactive exhibits and educational programs are great for families looking to spend a day out. Nearby, the Tisch Children’s Zoo allows younger visitors to interact with farm animals in a safe and engaging environment.

Another must-see location is Bow Bridge, an architectural marvel rising gracefully over the waters of the park. This cast-iron bridge offers stunning views and is a popular spot for photography, particularly during sunrise and sunset. The surrounding gardens provide a picturesque backdrop that enhances the bridge’s romantic allure.

For art enthusiasts, the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is a highlight. Often considered the heart of Central Park, the terrace overlooks the beautiful fountain, and its surroundings are adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. Street performers and musicians frequently gather here, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Active visitors can enjoy numerous outdoor activities, including boating on the Central Park Lake or cycling along the park’s scenic pathways. Rent a rowboat at the Loeb Boathouse and spend a leisurely afternoon paddling on the calm waters or explore the designated bike trails that wind through picturesque landscapes.

The park’s extensive meadows are ideal for picnicking, with Sheep Meadow being a popular choice for those looking to relax and soak up the sun. Families often spread out blankets, enjoy food from nearby vendors, or partake in games like frisbee and kite flying.

While exploring the park, don’t miss the iconic Strawberry Fields, a memorial to John Lennon, located near the Dakota Building. This tranquil area is famous for its “Imagine” mosaic, where visitors gather to pay their respects and reflect amidst peaceful surroundings.

As the seasons change, Central Park transforms, offering a unique experience year-round. In the fall, the foliage turns breathtaking shades of red and gold, while winter welcomes ice skaters to the Wollman Rink. Springtime blooms attract flower lovers to the Conservatory Garden, and summer provides opportunities for outdoor concerts and theater performances in the park.

Looking ahead, Central Park continues to be a focal point for cultural events and community gatherings. The annual Central Park Conservancy Film Festival and various art exhibits showcase the park’s vibrancy and artistic influence. Visitors are encouraged to stay updated on upcoming events that celebrate the park’s enduring legacy.

What is the best time of year to visit Central Park?

The best time to visit Central Park is during spring (April to June) and fall (September to November) when the weather is pleasant, and the natural beauty is at its peak.

Are there guided tours available in Central Park?

Yes, there are various guided tours available, including walking, biking, and themed tours that can enhance your experience and knowledge of the park’s history and landmarks.

Is there an entrance fee for Central Park?

Ah, New York City—the land of dreams, skyscrapers, and good bagels. But let’s be honest, the real heart of the Big Apple can be found pulsing on the bright lights of Broadway. Whether you’re a seasoned theatergoer or a first-time visitor, experiencing a Broadway show is akin to diving into a sea of glitter, drama, and a sprinkle of that New York magic. So, grab your popcorn, and let’s break down how to best enjoy this spectacular slice of culture!

Choosing the Right Show

Before you can shout “Bravo!” you need to pick your poison. With over 40 theaters lining the streets of the Theater District, the choices can feel overwhelming. Are you in the mood for a heart-wrenching drama, a gut-busting comedy, or perhaps a jazzy musical that’ll have you singing in the shower for weeks? Here are a few options to consider:

Musicals That Hit All the Right Notes

If you want to belt out show tunes in the shower, then don’t miss “Hamilton” or “Wicked”. These shows have taken the theater world by storm and will leave you humming for days. Of course, if you’re into classic tales, “The Phantom of the Opera” is like meeting an old, slightly creepy friend who knows how to make an entrance.

Comedies for a Laughter Overdose

Need a good laugh? Look no further than “The Book of Mormon” or “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Both will have you rolling in the aisles. Just try to avoid snorting your drink out of your nose—it’s an ugly look.

Newer Shows on the Block

New shows pop up like mushrooms after the rain, so keep an eye out for exciting debuts. “Moulin Rouge!” is a feast for the eyes with its dazzling sets, while “Six” reimagines the stories of Henry VIII’s wives in a fresh, catchy format. Who knew history could be this catchy?

Getting Tickets – The Scavenger Hunt

Alright, you’ve settled on a show. Now it’s time for the hunt: purchasing tickets! Think of it as a game of Monopoly, except instead of buying Boardwalk, you’re snagging seats to see Broadway stars live.

Advance Booking

Your best bet is to book tickets in advance. Head to official websites or reliable ticket sellers like Ticketmaster or Today Tix. They often have last-minute deals that won’t ruin your bank account! Oh, the sweet agony of a sold-out show—don’t fall victim to this tragedy!

Lottery and Rush Tickets

If you’re feeling lucky (or adventurous), consider entering the lottery for popular shows or grab rush tickets. This involves standing in line like a true Broadway warrior, but think of all the stories you’ll accumulate with fellow theater-lovers as you wait.

Dress to Impress (or Not)

Fashion on Broadway is as diverse as the shows themselves. You’ll see everything from glamorous gowns to comfortable jeans. The key is to find a sweet spot between comfort and style. You don’t want to look too casual (who wants to be the person in sweatpants?), but you also don’t want to be so dressed up that you outshine the stars (unless you’re secretly auditioning).

Pro Tips on Dressing

Check the weather beforehand; NYC can throw you a curveball. And if the show’s in winter, be sure your ensemble has room for a big, cozy jacket. Your nifty outfit will only look good if you’re not freezing!

Snacks and Drinks – The Real Stars of the Night

Let’s talk sustenance. No Broadway experience is complete without some snacks and drinks. Most theaters allow you to indulge in a delicious treat during the show, but you might want to check their policy first. Nothing says “I’m a tourist” like trying to sneak a whole pizza into the theater.

Pre-Show Dining

If you want to dine like a local beforehand, consider grabbing a bite at a restaurant nearby. Try places like Joe Allen for its cozy vibe or Becco for a delicious pre-theater prix fixe meal. Just make sure to leave yourself enough time—there’s nothing worse than rushing into a show while dramatically gulping down your dinner. You’ll regret it when the curtain rises!

Embrace the Experience

When the lights go dim, and the curtain goes up, just let it all wash over you. Embrace the whole experience—the laughter, the tears, and maybe, for some shows, even the standing ovations. And remember: you’re in one of the most vibrant cities in the world, surrounded by people who love theater just as much as you do.

Souvenir Time!

Before you leave, snag a souvenir from the merchandise stands. Whether it’s a wickedly adorable mug or a T-shirt that proclaims your love for Broadway, you’ll want a little memento to remind you of that magical night.

In conclusion, New York City’s Broadway shows aren’t just a night out; they’re an experience that will linger in your memory long after you’ve left the theater. So get out there, choose a show, grab those tickets, and dive into the extravaganza that is Broadway. Your adventure awaits! And who knows? This might just become your favorite travel story to tell.

New York City is a cultural treasure trove, bursting at the seams with creativity and color. If you’re an art aficionado (or just an art admirer), you’ll want to navigate your way through the city’s many stunning galleries. Prepare your Instagram feeds, because when you step into these must-visit art galleries, you’ll be surrounded by captivating works that inspire and challenge the way you see the world. Grab your walking shoes and let’s explore the vibrant art scene of NYC!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Ah, The Met, where the *artistic elite* rub elbows with ordinary tourists looking for a photo op with some ancient Egyptian artifacts. Home to over 2 million works of art, this museum is not just the crown jewel of the Upper East Side, but also a place where you could easily spend an entire day without even scratching the surface of its collection.

The Met has everything from European masterpieces to American icons, with a vast selection of costumes and armor in between. Don’t miss the museum’s rooftop garden, which offers a stunning view of the city skyline and is the perfect backdrop for your next profile picture. Just remember: no matter how many times Lady Gaga performs, no one gets to wear that giant hat in here.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

If The Met is the grandparent on Thanksgiving, then MoMA is the cool cousin that shows up at the party with a new tattoo and some fascinating stories. Home to some of the most iconic modern and contemporary art pieces, MoMA is the place where you can see works by the likes of Picasso, Warhol, and Van Gogh all in one afternoon.

What sets MoMA apart is not just the art but also the atmosphere. The museum hosts various exhibitions throughout the year, so drop in for a temporary exhibit that might surprise you. And if you start feeling a little peckish after all that art appreciation, why not indulge at one of their cafes? The prices might send your wallet into a fit, but your taste buds will thank you.

The Whitney Museum of American Art

Nestled in the trendy Meatpacking District, The Whitney is like that hip friend who always knows the *latest cool hangouts*. Focused on 20th- and 21st-century American art, you’ll find a delightful collection showcasing the diversity of American culture, from Edward Hopper’s iconic paintings to contemporary works that make you go, “Wow, I didn’t know art could be like that!”

The Whitney’s outdoor space boasts spectacular views of the Hudson River, making it an ideal spot for a quick breather. Grab a drink from their café and take a moment to reflect on the sheer talent that art can encapsulate. And don’t forget to check out the mesmerizing art installations that often pop up outside – they add a quirky touch to your Instagram feed and your overall experience!

The Guggenheim Museum

Ah, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural wonder, the Guggenheim! Even if you’re not an art lover, you can appreciate how this museum looks like the world’s fanciest ice cream cone. Inside, the spiral ramp leads you through contemporary art masterpieces in a way that won’t require you to sit on your knees in front of a painting. Instead, you’ll casually stroll upwards, soaking in works from artists like Kandinsky and Chagall.

The Guggenheim is always mixing things up, so you can count on finding innovative exhibitions that push the boundaries of what art can be. Plus, the building itself is an iconic piece of art! Be sure to take a moment to admire its design; it’s the perfect selfie backdrop. Just be careful not to trip over fellow art lovers who might be too busy staring at the ceiling.

The New Museum

Located on the Bowery, The New Museum is like that *edgy friend* who’s always at the forefront of the next big thing. It focuses on contemporary art and serves as a launching pad for new artists whose works are often showcased for the first time here.

The New Museum’s exhibitions challenge traditional narratives, making you think about global issues and the complexities of modern life. It’s a place where interactive art installations meet chaotic performances, and it’s bound to spark some conversations. Be prepared—this museum isn’t your typical fare. Some exhibits may leave you scratching your head, while others may have you pondering the meaning of life itself.

If your feet still have some energy left in them, venture into Chelsea’s gallery district. This area is a hub for smaller, independent galleries offering a plethora of art styles, from the stunningly beautiful to the downright bizarre. Spend an afternoon gallery hopping, where you can encounter emerging artists before the rest of the world catches on.

Most galleries offer free admission, making it a wallet-friendly way to discover something new. You might even stumble upon a piece that will become the centerpiece of your living room. Just don’t forget to ask the gallery owners about their artists—because nothing screams “I’m cultured” more than having a knowledgeable conversation with an art insider.

Visiting these art galleries in New York City is more than just viewing art; it’s a comprehensive experience that engages the senses and broadens the mind. So grab your camera, open your eyes to beauty (and oddity), and embrace the colorful tapestry that is the New York art scene. Whether you’re an art expert or a casual observer, these locations will leave you both inspired and entertained.

Central Park is not just an oasis amid the hustle and bustle of New York City; it’s a sprawling playground filled with picturesque spots just waiting for your picnic blanket to be thrown down. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, finding the perfect place to enjoy your lunch can feel like searching for the Holy Grail. Fear not! Here’s a guide to some of the best picnic spots in Central Park, complete with all the details you need to enjoy your outing.

Sheep Meadow: The Grass is Always Greener

Nestled in the southwestern part of Central Park, Sheep Meadow is that large, open grassy expanse everyone daydreams about when they imagine picnicking in NYC. With stunning views of the city skyline on one side and the park’s picturesque trees on the other, it’s like eating on the set of a romantic comedy.

Let’s talk about the space! Spanning a whopping 15 acres, Sheep Meadow isn’t just a grassy knoll; it’s an invitation to lounge around like a content sheep (minus the woolly coat). Before you spread out that blanket, keep in mind that the space can get crowded on warm weekends, so either arrive early or prepare to engage in some friendly vibes with your fellow picnickers.

Consider bringing a frisbee or a ball—just be aware of the unspoken rules against excessive games of dodgeball, unless you want to revolutionize the picnic experience.

Great Lawn: When Life Gives You Lemons, Bring a Picnic

The Great Lawn might just be the best name anyone has ever given to a patch of grass. This expansive area, located in the heart of the park, can hold about 1 million people (or 1 million sandwiches, depending on how you see it). It’s a prime location to set up your picnic basket and bask in the glory of the sun—sunscreen optional but recommended.

As you settle down with your food, take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. You might hear live music wafting through the air, as locals are known to set up impromptu concerts. Keep an eye out for those playing the guitar or even holding a ukulele—they are the true picnic MVPs!

When it comes to the ideal scenic backdrop, the Great Lawn offers an inspiring view of the surrounding parklands, making it one of the most sought-after spots for casual gatherings or midday escapes from the daily grind.

Belvedere Castle: A Royal Picnic Fit for Kings and Queens

If you’re looking for a location with a bit of flair, Belvedere Castle is the castle for you! Sitting high atop a rock outcrop, this gothic-style structure offers stunning panoramic views of Central Park. While you can’t exactly spread out your blanket on the castle, the surrounding areas give you plenty of room to find that perfect spot.

As you nibble on your artisanal cheese plate or the humble PB&J, take a moment to appreciate the beauty around you. The gardens nearby, oozing with seasonal flowers, create an atmosphere that’ll make you feel like royalty, even if your refreshments are just a leftover sandwich from last week’s grocery haul.

And if you feel like channeling your inner William Wallace, a small hike up to the castle will reward you with views that would make any brave soul proud.

Bow Bridge: Love at First Bite

For those with a romantic heart (or just a penchant for photogenic locations), Bow Bridge is the ultimate picnic spot. This charming, cast-iron bridge is known for its stunning views and charming architecture, making it an idyllic spot to enjoy your food while simultaneously preparing for your next Instagram post.

Stroll along the water, find a cozy bench, or even plop down on the grass nearby (not on the bridge, please). Just be ready to share space with groups of eager photographers capturing selfies or engagement proposals—talk about setting the mood!

To truly complete the experience, consider packing a little more than the usual fare. A bottle of sparkling water, refreshing fruit salad, or even an exquisite charcuterie board could turn your picnic into a five-star dining experience, if only in your own mind.

Strawberry Fields: A Piece of Peace

If you’re a fan of tranquility and John Lennon, then Strawberry Fields is where you want to be. This serene area, dedicated to the former Beatles member, features delightful gardens and the iconic “Imagine” mosaic—perfect for setting the mood as you munch on your lunch.

Perhaps bring along a guitar or some soft music, and serenade the few who will appreciate your playlist choice! You’ll find that this spot attracts a diverse crowd, including yogis, musicians, and even a few aspiring poets lost in thought ( or is it just lost?).

After you finish your meal, take a few moments to breathe in the peace of the surroundings. You might even feel inspired to pen a new song…or at the very least, wonder why you blow all your money on take-out when you can whip up a mean grilled cheese at home.

The Ramble: Where Nature Meets Nom-Noms

Last but certainly not least, The Ramble is the secret garden of Central Park. This 38-acre woodland area is filled with winding paths and hidden nooks perfect for escaping the city’s hustle and bustle. If you wander a bit off the beaten path, you might just discover your own secret spot.

Bring a picnic basket full of goodies and settle down on a log or a patch of grass to enjoy your repast. Keep your eyes peeled for birdwatchers, as The Ramble is one of the best spots in NYC for spotting migratory birds. Depending on the season, you could witness a feathered spectacle rivaling any Broadway show.

Adventurous souls may wish to partner their picnics with a little wildlife watching or perhaps a cheeky game of “I Spy”—but fair warning, The Ramble can get a little dense, and those paths can be tricky to navigate after a few sips of your sparkling water.

With all these incredible spots at your disposal, your next picnic in Central Park doesn’t have to be a mundane affair. Just pack your favorite snacks, bring a good book, and embrace the spirit of play. After all, life is too short not to enjoy a delightful meal surrounded by nature, trees, and maybe that one dog who’s determined to join your picnic party!

Ah, New York City! The concrete jungle where dreams are made of, and where the pigeon population could rival that of a small country. If you’re planning to wander through the bustling streets of NYC, get ready for a smorgasbord of unforgettable experiences. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, this city has a way of stealing your heart fast—just like a Broadway ticket seller during rush hour.

Encountering the Icons

No visit would be complete without standing in awe of the Statue of Liberty. You know, that green lady who’s been welcoming immigrants since 1886? A trip by ferry to Liberty Island is a must. Sure, you might have to jostle with a few selfie sticks, but picture this: you, standing at the foot of Lady Liberty, wind tousling your hair like you’re in a shampoo commercial, while the skyline sparkles in the background. What could possibly be better?

If you’re feeling particularly inspired, why not hop on a bike and peddle your way through Central Park? This lush haven in the midst of the city is a true gift to mankind. You might even spot a few couples having their ‘meet-cute’ moments or actors rehearsing lines. And if you’re lucky, you might run into a surprise musical performance. Just remember, if you see a guy juggling flaming batons, it’s best to stand back—unless you fancy a close-up of chaos.

Diving Into the Local Scene

Now, let’s chat about food. Oh, glorious food! NYC is a food lover’s Mecca. Start with a classic slice of New York-style pizza. Seriously, if your pizza slice isn’t bigger than your face, are you even doing it right? Grab it from a local pizzeria, fold it in half, and marvel at how it’s somehow both crispy and chewy. It’s practically a rite of passage! Be cautious, though. One minute you’re savoring that cheesy goodness, and the next, it’s all over your shirt like a badge of honor.

Street Food Wonders

The street food scene is another culinary adventure waiting to unfurl before you. Tacos, hot dogs, falafel—you name it, NYC likely has it by the curb, served by a delightfully chatty vendor. Seriously, you haven’t lived until you’ve tried a hot dog from a vendor in Times Square, juggled between a parade of tourists and the glowing lights of Broadway. It’s practically part of the city’s charm.

Cultural Enrichment

Next on our NYC checklist is art and culture. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a treasure trove that leaves most people saying, “Wow, I need to quit my job and take up painting.” This massive museum houses over two million works, enough to make any budding artist feel both inspired and woefully inadequate. Make sure to check out the iconic Met steps. You’ll likely find dozens of tourists taking heroic selfies pretending they are the kings and queens of the world.

Broadway: Where Dreams Are Staged

You can’t leave New York City without catching a Broadway show. Whether you’re a fan of musicals or prefer a thought-provoking drama, there is something for everyone. Just be ready for your emotions to go on a rollercoaster ride. One moment you’ll be laughing until you cry, and the next you might find yourself choking back tears as you experience the profound talent of the actors. And don’t forget to engage in the time-honored tradition of trying to score discounted tickets at TKTS! The thrill of the ticket hunt is half the fun.

Exploring Hidden Gems

Sure, you’ve seen the big attractions, but what about all those fun, quirky spots that make New York, New York? For example, head over to The High Line, an elevated park built on a former railway track. This green oasis not only offers stunning views of the city but also showcases impressive public art installations. It’s the perfect place to unwind—just watch out for those joggers who seem to treat it like their personal racetrack.

And for the ultimate Instagram shot, don’t miss the charming streets of Williamsburg. With its eclectic stores, vibrant street art, and artsy atmosphere, you’d think you’ve entered a time warp where hipsters reign supreme. Don your best vintage outfit and prepare for a day of coffee-tasting and thrift shopping. Who knows? You might just walk away with a perfectly worn-in leather jacket—and a story or two about the local barista’s controversial haircut.

Wrap It Up

To wrap up your NYC adventure, stroll through the majestic Brooklyn Bridge at sunset. As you walk across this iconic span, the city skyline will unfold before you, the golden hues of the setting sun painting the skyline in a breathtaking palette. Trust us, it’s an experience that would make even the most stoic New Yorker shed a tear. And if that doesn’t do it, the thought of a late-night bagel might.

So, there you have it—a whirlwind tour of unforgettable experiences in New York City. The city that never sleeps will capture your heart, challenge your taste buds, and fill your camera with memories that’ll last a lifetime. Just remember, while the city is bustling, it’s up to you to stop and take it all in—preferably with a slice of pizza in hand.

Across the world, people typically travel to places to see sites of historical significance or natural wonders. This is understandable – when you spend so much time and money getting from point A to point B, you want it to be a memorable and iconic place. However, modern cities are as much of a marvel as a waterfall or a mountain range.

There are some cities in the world you must visit. These iconic urban centers house a melting pot of culture, tradition, modernism, and more. These cities are a modern culture, and you can soak up every drop of it with a little careful planning and budgeting. So if you’re looking to travel to cities when you are allowed, here’s where you should go.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is the biggest city in the world. It spans far beyond the city limits and houses over 37 million people. However long you want to visit Tokyo, it would be impossible to cover much of this megacity. Whether you are interested in religion, culture, spirituality, food, fashion, or even shopping, there is something for everyone in Tokyo.

Tokyo is not a cheap or even affordable city. You can easily spend up to $250 on a room if you don’t plan well and don’t do your research. In terms of traveling within the city, you should get a Japan Rail Pass for maximum savings. Other forms of public transport can get expensive, and many people choose to hire a car for the day instead.

New York City, USA

New York City has inspired movies, video games, and songs. It is a modern icon and a legend in terms of places to stay. The Times Square New Years Bash is watched by millions of people across the world and has heralded the new year for decades. NYC, as it is popularly known, attracts people interested in art, theatre, movies, food, and more. Plus, the city that never sleeps is relatively just a short ride to the U.S. capital, where you can soak in more cultural and heritage sites while trying DC’s finest historic hotels.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Agustin Diaz

Rio is the second most populated city in Brazil and one of the most historical cities in the world. So much so, in fact, that a large part of the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city was founded in 1565 and is home to the famous Christ the Redeemer statue, an iconic tourist destination ever since it was installed.

Rio is the perfect beach city with bustling nightlife and gorgeous white-sand beaches and low mountains in perfect harmony. An iconic event that happens in Rio is the Carnival. The Carnival occurs before Lent, which draws millions of tourists from all over the world. If you plan to attend Carnival, you should book your tickets at least a year before.

Seoul, South Korea

If you like all things tech and skincare, Seoul is the perfect place for you! Seoul is iconic because of its amalgamation between historical and religious sites and modern, cutting-edge architecture. While it has a reputation for being expensive, it can be a lot cheaper than Europe or even North America. As long as you spend smartly, you can absolutely go to Seoul on a budget.

If you’re stumped about what to do in Seoul, you can simply wander around the streets and click what you come across. Seoul is filled with quirky cafes, a litany of festivals that take place all around the year, and more bars and restaurants than you can eat from. Even if you don’t have a plan, you can spend days packed with activities and events.

Paris, France

“For paris is a moveable feast…”

Can any list of iconic cities in the world be complete without mentioning Paris? Paris, known as the city of love, is iconic because of several reasons. The Eiffel Tower is one, drawing millions of people across all continents to take pictures of this testament to love. History buffs can stroll through Paris’ famous and historic lanes, also known as rues, and connect them to events that shaped the modern world.

Culture buffs can spend the day browsing through the Louvre Museum, provided you last the long lines. If you’re into food, you can spend weeks in Parish eating somewhere new every week. Whether you like baking or any other culinary arts, you will find yourself spoilt for choice among the cute cafes that line the historic city streets.

We challenge you: Visit all the places that little Kevin did in the “Home alone” movies

Whoever is not familiar with the adventures of the McCallister family during the 90’s was either not born yet or just skipped through a decade of Christmases without watching one of the most emblematic Christmas-themed comedies. To cut a long story short – in the first movie when Kevin McCallister is forgotten by his family (and it’s a huge family, no wonder why he got left behind) in their house, all alone for Christmas, while they struggle to race back before something happens to him. In the second Home Alone movie things get a little bit hectic. Kevin hasn’t been forgotten but instead, accidentally boards a plane to New York instead of his familys destination, Florida.

View from the La Guardia airport

The first scene we see from New York in the movie is the view from LaGuardia airport. A huge panoramic shot that displays the famous Empire State Building, along with all the skyscrapers piercing the sky.

The Queensboro bridge, which Kevin crosses in a cab, connects the two biggest parts of the city – Queens and Manhattan. It is an iconic location for New York because of its central position in the city. Battery Park is a place on the south side of New York that gives a clear view to the Statue of Liberty. The place has a rich film résumé. “Men in Black”, “Wall Street”, “She’s The One” and many other movies include a scene in this location. The World Trade Centre, Radio City Hall and South Street in Manhattan can be seen briefly in the movie.

Still early in the story, Kevin goes to The Plaza Hotel which is situated at number 750, 5th avenue and Central Park South, Manhattan. It was opened on October 1st, 1907 and is famous for providing residence to presidents, ambassadors, movie stars, musicians and many others. “Almost Famous” and “The Great Gatsby” are just some of the movie titles that feature the legendary hotel in their respective sets. A fun fact – in the movie “Home Alone 2” when Kevin enters the hotel, he is guided to the lobby by current US president and one time owner of the hotel, Donald Trump.

A view from Central Park

A good portion of footage in the movie is based in Central Parк. It is considered to be one of the most filmed locations in the world, and the most visited urban park in the United States in 2013, with over 40 million visitors annually. The renovations have been constantly ongoing for over 30 years now. Central Park has been classified as a national historical landmark since 1962. The park is a similar size to London’s Hyde Park and it has been used as an inspiration for young architects to create similar parks around the world. The Central Park Zoo, “Tavern of The Green” (an indoor restaurant), the Delacorte theatre and the Bethesda terrace and fountain are some of the places worth visiting while taking a walk through these historical patches of grass.

Later on we see Kevin hiding in the attic at Carnegie Hall along with another character he meets throughout the movie (not giving out spoilers). Carnegie Hall is a concert venue situated in the centre of Manhattan. It is one of the most prestigious scenes for performing classical music. When it was built in 1891, the first ever concert was conducted by Walter Damrosch and no other than the Russian composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tschaikovsky. Apart from classical music, jazz concerts also have had a frequent exposure in the venue.

And last but not least, Times Square. Who hasn’t seen a picture of this location during the night with all the billboards and commercials shining brighter than a thousand suns? It is one of the world’s most visited tourist places with around 50 million visitors per year and 300 to 400 thousand people per day, passing by one the busiest intersections in the world. Madam Tussauds Wax Museum, the former Paramount theatre building, Times Square Church and Ed Sullivan Theatre are just some of the places to set foot into. And, of course, you can’t miss the chance to enjoy Broadway shows like The Music Man musical, Wicked, or The Phantom of the Opera in Time Square. The restaurant row, located on west 46h street, provides home to a variety of restaurants that feature cuisines from all around the world. Thai, Spanish, French, Brazilian, Japanese, Italian and a whole lot more different dishes are to be expected among the food joints.

As a native New Yorker, I am always looking for unique things to do in New York City. So when I heard about the Seaglass Carousel on the Travel Channel, I was absolutely ecstatic.

Located in Lower Manhattan, in Battery Park, the seaglass carousel overlooks the majestic beauty of the Statue of Liberty and is a great stop for anyone touring this part of the City. But this man made marvel is unlike any carousel that I have ever ridden on. For $5.00 a ride, get in line and hop on the iridescent fish of your choice.

As the music begins and your fish begins to twirl around, you feel like a kid again; a sense of child-like awe and wonder overcomes you as you take in the music and the shimmering colors that sparkle around you. For a moment, you begin to think that you are a part of Ariel’s world in the Little Mermaid, but then the ride comes to a halt and your are propelled back into the reality of Lower Manhattan. A truly one of a kind experience that is fun for adults and children alike.

The High Line is by far the coolest park and walking route in New York City in my opinion. Built on a former elevated train line that was abandoned for years, the High Line was conceived about 15 years ago and new life was breathed into the track when it was turned into a walking and running path in 3 phases starting in 2009. The High Line begins in the Meatpacking District at Washington and Gansevoort Street and runs all the way to 11th Avenue and 34th Street. The High Line can be quite busy on the weekends but I’ve found that in the early morning during the week, you’ll have the High Line practically to yourself. Get up early, grab a coffee and enjoy a relaxing walk. If you’re a fast walker, you can hike the High Line end-to-end in less than 45 minutes. I’m always tempted to dawdle though. I love admiring New York’s signature water tanks sitting atop the various apartment buildings along the route.

High Line Park is filled with wildflowers and other low maintenance species lending an unkempt air to the place consistent with its history. Why not take some extra time to stop and smell the flowers? Art installations dot the High Line from end-to-end so there is always something new to see every time you visit Manhattan. I love the sense of being above it all when I hike the High Line. There are no traffic signals to slow you down and the city sounds seem to fade away.

A unique and impactful experience to have in New York City is to take a cooking class at League of Kitchens through Visit.org. The food workshops are led by immigrants hailing from all around the world to promote cultural exchange through culinary arts. One of the main reasons why we travel is to taste local food around the globe. What could be better than learning to cook cultural cuisine while impacting the community responsible for it and sharing a meal with new friends? Not only will you learn some new culinary skills, discover exotic flavors and ancient recipes– you’ll also be making a far greater impact than learning to make a new dish by supporting the social enterprise. During the cooking lesson, you’ll have the opportunity to learn traditional recipes from expert home cooks for an authentic feast. This delicious culinary experience supports refugees, which is more important now than ever. ”

If you’re a street art lover, or just love culture in general, you can’t miss Brooklyn’s Bushwick Collective. The Bushwick Collective is an open air street art mural collection you can tour through yourself to explore a side of New York City that many visitors don’t see. So don’t just stick to the typical tourist spots, get out of Manhattan and into Brooklyn!

About the Bushwick Collective: Bushwick native Joe Ficalora founded the Bushwick Collective in an effort to transform his industrial and gritty neighborhood in Brooklyn. In the past years, Bushwick has gone from a neighborhood largely avoided by tourists to a hip area frequented by locals and in-the-know tourists as well. Vogue‘s Anna Wintour even named Bushwick the seventh coolest neighborhood in the world (whatever that means!).

One of the great things about visiting the Bushwick Collective is that it is a bit of a trip from Manhattan which means that the people who are really interested in street art make it there, so it’s not nearly as busy or touristy as your typical Manhattan must-sees.

If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the art itself, consider booking a tour with Street Art Walk.

How to get to the Bushwick Collective: Take the L train to Bushwick and get out at Jefferson St. Station. From there it is a short walk to the Bushwick Collective. Depending on where you leave from in Manhattan, it will likely take you 30-40 minutes. In the area you’ll find cafes and restaurants, so its the perfect place to get breakfast and admire street art for a few hours.

When I moved to New York City eight years ago, I was obsessed with music and bands and going to as many concerts as humanly possible. I worked as an assistant to various artists and interned at record labels, eventually earning my bachelor’s degree in music management. Before I moved to New York, I had visited the city quite a bit and was familiar with one particular music venue called Rockwood Music Hall, which is a unique establishment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan that is both unassuming and perfectly magical.

Rockwood Music Hall consists of three separate “stages” or rooms, ranging in size from extremely tiny (“Rockwood 1” as its known to regulars) to “Rockwood 2” and “Rockwood 3” which have a slightly larger capacity and can host anything from a secret show for a celebrity performer to a gathering of local New York musicians supporting each others’ work. The style of music varies, but you can always assume that even if you don’t know the band, popping in to see who’s playing will always be worth your while.

There is something incredibly special about the atmosphere at Rockwood Music Hall, and it has always been the place I feel most at home in the big city. I have attended hundreds of shows there at this point, and every one is a little different. While it has become more well-known in the past few years, it still has a sort of “speakeasy” vibe and provides an experience that is cozy, welcoming and inspiring all at the same time. Bands from all over the world come to perform at Rockwood, and they have a packed schedule of one artist per hour anywhere from 3 pm to 1 am every single night! Entry is often free, making it an even more enticing evening activity in pricy New York City.

One of the most popular things to do when coming to NYC is to go to a Broadway show. What if I told you that you could experience Broadway without the Broadway ticket prices? Ellen’s Stardust Diner is a unique gem located on Broadway St. in Time Square, and is home to the world famous singing waitstaff. The staff will not only take your food order and bring you the world’s most delicious milkshake, but will also sing and dance on tables to Broadway hits! Known as a halfway house to Broadway, the talent level in this place is insane and the turnover rate is high due to the waitstaff getting discovered for Broadway roles. This place is a favorite for both tourists and locals a like and if you decide to have a meal here before going to a Broadway show, be prepared to have the best day of your life! There is ALWAYS a line (like most places in NYC) so be prepared to wait, but once you’re inside you’ll realize why because you won’t want to leave and give up your table either!

There is no typo in the heading. This thought-provoking spot located on Cortlandt Alley in New York City is unique in many aspects but mainly in the way it makes you think about contemporary culture, politics and the world as a whole. The exhibition fitted in a former freight elevator uses ‘object journalism’ as it has been described by journalist Rob Walker to describe Mmuseumm’s original approach to curation. Mmuseumm explores the modern world, current events, and humanity through the exhibition of vernacular objects. The exhibitions are changing and feature wondrous objects such as gluten-free Communion wafer, a selfie-stick that unintentionally cause premature death,

Mmuseumm is open to visitors every Thursday and Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and every Saturday
