Canada is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world and appeals to many travelers regardless of their choice and manner of travel. Whether you are going solo, having a couple’s retreat, or a group/family vacation, there are plenty of great things to do here.

However, we suggest skipping some of the most popular sites and heading to see something more exciting, even if underrated. So, welcome to the top 10 secret wonders of Canada. Let’s start planning!

Kensington Market, Toronto

While Toronto is a great city of opportunities and entertainment, finding something off-beaten-path can be a bit difficult. That is why you need to know about the gorgeous Kensington Market!

Creating a serene oasis of restaurants, shops, and cafes, Kensington Market is one of the most bohemia-looking spaces in Toronto, yet it is usually a bit overlooked. A real shame since it can lead to some great finds and a wonderful afternoon.

Look for handmade trinkets, vintage items, the best pastry, and much more!

Notre Dame de Bon Secours Chapel, Montreal

Continue with your search for wonders and board the high speed train from Toronto to Montreal!

A chapel of a beautiful name and rich historical background, Notre Dame de Bon Secours is not as famous as other ones here in Montreal, but its design and stunning architecture can capture one’s eye just like any other!

The 18th-century church is quite mystical and exciting, but you have to check it yourself! You can find it off the path of the Old Port and, if anything, ask for directions to the Sailor’s Church, as this is what Notre Dame de Bon Secours is often called!

Haida Gwaii, British Columbia

Obviously, Canada is a great treasure for all nature lovers, and visiting British Columbia is one of the best ways to see its beauty and mightiness.

The perfect hidden gem for all adventure seekers and die-hard nature lovers is Haida Gwaii, an impressive archipelago of rugged and remote wilderness. You can hike, explore, sail, fish, bike, kayak, and even surf!

With these endless choices, Haida Gwaii, previously known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is a must-see and should end up on your itinerary straight away!

Parkland Region, Manitoba

Every country as wealthy as Canada has a province that could be a mini version of the whole thing. Equally as entertaining, equally as historically rich, and equally as natural. Manitoba has all of those, and it is one of the best ways for you to get your fill!

Parkland Region is one of the lesser-known regions in Manitoba, located between the Lakes Manitoba and Winnipegosis. Here you can enjoy your classic Canadian wilderness, such as endless rivers, woodlands, and smaller lakes! Also, you could see the highest mountain peak in the city, and a good mountain is always exciting.

Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta

You might think that you know all of the best museums in Canada, but, in reality, cities like Alberta have several hidden wonders that await your time and attention! Let’s visit Dinosaur Provincial Park.

This fun and impressive land is the perfect museum-type destination since it is interesting and appeals to any age! Children will find plenty of exciting, interactive stuff to do here, and adults will be able to learn all about the fossils of the mightiest animals on earth!

Manitoulin Island, Ontario

Located in Lake Huron, Manitoulin Island is the biggest freshwater island in the world and one of the most peculiar, impressive things to see in natural Ontario.

With a quick journey from the city’s center, admire and explore the greenery and lakes of Manitoulin Island. And not just Lake Huron! The island is exceptionally unique, what with it having a smaller island in lakes that are inside of Manitoulin. Exciting, huh?

Visit Ontario for Mother Nature’s craziest creations!

Thunder Cove, Prince Edward Island

Considered a part of the most surreal places in Canada, Thunder Cove on Prince Edward Island is one of the most blood-pumping and fun things to do here.

Basically, you can hike or bike all the way to the most exciting rock formations, red-sand beaches, and, most importantly, sea caves! Admittedly, there is a considerable distance to walk to Thunder Cove from anywhere else, but you can easily do it with some stamina and a final goal in mind!

Vulcan, Alberta

Possibly the most fitting for a day trip, Vulcan is a small town in Alberta and has a very specific vibe around it!

Designed to commemorate Canadian actors of the great franchise of Star Wars, Vulcan has Trekkie written all over it! Starting with theme restaurants, a Star Wars museum, an information center, and even spaceship-shaped establishments, the town is one of the lesser-known gems of Canada that deserve more recognition!

Burk’s Falls, Ontario

If you crave complete serenity and apparent distance from tourists, noise, and city crowds, Burk’s Falls in Ontario is the place to see!

This charming riverside village is a little oasis on Canadian grounds, surrounded by Almaguin Highlands and some of the most characteristic street designs. There are plenty of spaces to see, but you should just go for a stroll anywhere you’d like and just explore what interests you on the way.

There are usually no tourists and heavy traffic, so keep calm and enjoy!

Sucrerie de la Montagne, Quebec

One of Canada’s signature marks and best-produced goods, is the sweet and zesty Maple Syrup. In Sucrerie de la Montagne, Quebec, you can find the authentic sugar powerhouse, taking you back in time and introducing the art of Maple Syrup!

The whole establishment is quite interactive, so not only will you learn of its basis, preparation, and development, but you will also get free candy, wagon rides, feasts, and lectures. Why not enjoy vintage surroundings and the smell of caramelized sugar?

There you go! Ten great places to see and explore to get to know Canada.
Known for its great outdoors, Canada remains a top tourist destination. Canada boasts natural beauty from glaciers, mountains, lakes, and great forests. And the beautiful nature that you get to enjoy is almost unmatched worldwide.

However, there is more to Canada than just the great outdoors. Canada also boasts of cities that are not only clean but also safe, friendly, and multicultural. The ease of transportation in Canada makes it a popular tourist destination.

This ease cuts down the hustle of commuting from a city such as Toronto To Montreal to get in touch with nature without having to struggle. So, whatever your interest is, Canada won’t disappoint. But before you pack up and go, below is the ultimate Canada bucket list.

Witness The Niagara Falls

Perhaps one of the most popular scenic views, Niagara falls should top your bucket list. Here, you’ll witness three different waterfalls combined to form a gigantic waterfall. You can witness the majestic falls in various ways. Enjoy this scenic view from above by taking a helicopter ride. From above, you can enjoy the dramatic falls and the rainbow bridge. Alternatively, you can dine in the Skylon Tower or the Fallsview buffet restaurant, where you’ll get both great views of the falls and enjoy a great meal.

Experience The Indigenous Culture

For a life-changing experience, you should consider experiencing the indigenous culture in Canada. And with Canada being celebrated for its diversity, you can indulge in their practices, languages, way of life, knowledge, and food. You can book a tour full of explorations and great dining experiences that’ll leave you grateful and change your perspective on the indigenous people.

Road Trip Through Canada

If you love hitting the road, a trip from one coast to the other should be on your bucket list. Canada has a trans-Canada highway connecting all ten provinces with great spots to explore.

You can have an itinerary of places to road trip through depending on your preferences for sights. Some great destinations include Icefields, Cowboy trail, Sea to sky highway, and Vancouver Island.

Relax At Floating Wilderness

When looking for places to stay, the floating lodge is a great spot. Here you can enjoy a remote and peaceful stay in the wild as you can view grizzly bears. Apart from grizzlies, you can take a mammal-viewing boat trip where you might spot leaping salmon and pacific white-sided dolphins. If you are worried about your safety, these tours have expert guides well-versed in the area.

Visit Canada’s National Parks To Connect With Nature

Perhaps one to top your bucket list is Canada’s national parks. These national parks are a must-see if you enjoy nature, thanks to their unique features. Consider visiting Kouchibouguac National Park, that’s well known for its maritime charm, indulge in the wilderness of Yoho National Park, and marvel at the Canadian Rockies.

Observe The Aurora Borealis

Being one of the world’s seven natural wonders, enjoying the Aurora Borealis should top your bucket list. Here you’ll enjoy staring at the sky of swirling fuchsias, violets, and greens that are guaranteed to be mesmerizing.

These lights are worth the time, and it’ll be a shame to turn a blind eye to one of the exceptional creations. And at the end of the day, you get a great experience and amazing photos of the gram.

Hike The Canadian Rockies

If you enjoy hiking, Canada may have something new for you. So, going onto highway ninety-three, you’ll enjoy one of the greatest drives between icefields parkway, which connects Jasper National Park with Banff National Park.

Afterward, you’ll enjoy a hike from the glacier and marvel at the glacier skywalk, which sticks out over the cliff’s edge. If you are an adrenaline lover, consider stepping onto the glass floor and enjoying the waterfall below.

Enjoy The World’s Highest Tides In Canada’s Maritime

This picturesque scene is full of lighthouses over rocky coastlines and houses painted in primary colors. But the main part of adding this destination to your bucket list is due to the tidal range that’s not only high but also impressive.

Observe the spectacular tides as the seawater flows in and out of the bay. Consider visiting Canada’s Maritime at high tide for the best experiences. And for the best view, visit the unique tide-worn formations that also offer whale-watching cruises.

Enjoy Polar Bear Viewing

The town of Churchill is located on Hudson Bay and is well known as the polar bear capital of the world. Here, you can get access to see these majestic creatures. The bears gather here at the end of the summer and wait for the water to freeze before they can head out onto the ice.

If you are interested in polar bear viewing, book a tour. Note that you can get the best views from tundra buggies that are meant to handle the icy terrain, which provides a safe viewing for tourists.

View The Beluga Whale Migration

While still in Churchill, you might get to tick something off your bucket list. Although this destination has plenty of other wildlife, watching the beluga whale migration is the main thing to add to your bucket list.

If you are interested, consider visiting during the second half of July and the first half of August. This time is the best, as these whales migrate every July to feed and give birth. When going to view the whale migration, there are several ways to enjoy depending on your preference.

For instance, if you hope to see belugas without getting into the water, consider booking a Zodiac tour. This tour will help you get closer to pictures and to experience the best. Alternatively, if you travel in larger groups, consider a passenger boat where belugas come up to the boat. Note that you can snorkel and get close to the whales or kayak to the belugas without getting wet.

Bottom Line

Canada is a beautiful country full of natural beauty that ranges from mountains, lakes, forests, and glaciers. So, when making a bucket list, you have many options, thanks to Canada’s long coastline. Whatever you enjoy, Canada is guaranteed to offer you that and more. So, be ready to enjoy different true natural wonderful landscapes.

I expected my first ever hitchhiking trip to be fun and provide an interesting story, but I didn’t expect it to be life-changing. It was.

My plan was to thumb it directly from Guča festival in southern Serbia to Sofia, Bulgaria, where I was hoping to buy a cheap car and embark on a European road trip. After two luckless hours in the baking sun my patience was waning, until an unassuming hero named Vesko picked me up in his trusty (air-conditioned!) Mitsubishi steed. Vesko not only drove me all the way to Sofia, but then invited me to stay with him and his family in their beautiful house. The family fed, boozed and sheltered me, and even helped me buy the Citroen that would eventually take me to England and back.

Fast-forward seven months and I found myself standing outside the Bulgarian embassy in London, dressed in a borrowed suit and preparing to perform the best man duties at Vesko’s wedding. Now, several years on, I’ve visited Vesko and his family in Sofia too many times to count and, exactly a year from now, will become godfather to his first-born son on the day little Lubtcho turns three.

It was a man with the cutest puppy ever, which I got to hold on my knees for the ride. It was one of those huge white shepherd breeds – the dog was about three months old, but was growing fast! He was white and fluffy and was destined to guard his owners’ workshop when he was fully grown. There was, however, a catch to his cuteness. It was the first solo trip for the puppy and he was obviously feeling car sick: after a few hairpin bends on the road, the car filled with a putrid smell. We stopped and examined the snow-white fur, but fortunately, they were just farts. We rode the rest of the way with the windows down while the pup whined a little each time he let his noxious gas escape.

1. Ask any of the passengers on the ferry who have arrived with their cars. Probably most of the cars are full of families with kids or companies of friends.

2. Find two Greeks with two free spots in their car. They will unkindly point you to the “bus station”.

3. Go to the so-called bus station – on the main road, but with no signs or anything.

4. Spot the police car with two policemen performing their regular road checks. The policemen will tell you that you’ll probably see a green bus and you should wave at it so it will stop for you.

5. Wait for 20 minutes or more. Policemen still doing their checks, no bus coming, no car willing to stop when there’s a police car right there.

6. Police decide to help by stopping a decent-looking car with two people.

7. Ask the lady from the car if they can drive you to anywhere in Ouranoupolis. She says OK. Jump in with your beach wear and hope not to leave wet marks on the seat.

8. Talk with the nice couple – is it worth it to drive from Thessaloniki for a weekend in Chalkidiki?

You are there! You’ve reached the town center in 8 “simple” steps and 8 kilometers. What a cool hitchhiking experience in Greece!

Whilst in Belize, I stayed in a cute (although a bit strange) little town called Crooked Tree. The town was 3 miles from the main bus route down a dirt track. My guesthouse had offered to drop me at the bus stop but as we were leaving decided to charge me $15 for the short journey. Since they overcharged me a kayak hire on a lake with no water, I declined to give them any extra money.

So with my heavy backpack in the middle of the day (it was about 40C/104F), I started walking to find a good hitchhiking spot. I was now thinking maybe I should have just paid! But after 10 minutes I reached the main road out of town and saw a pick-up truck. He stopped and I jumped into the back. There wasn’t much room as it was full of boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables – and some fish! But hey, it was a free lift. And the breeze was amazing as we whizzed along the bumpy dirt road.

A hot summer day. Or since it is Cambodia and the summer is eternal I should just say: a regular tropical day. Me and him standing on the road – sunburned faces licked by the heat, scarfs around heads, a big sign reading “Rattanakiri” in my hands. We drew it 5 minutes ago with the watercolor pencils whose main purpose is always the same – to create hitchhiking signs.

15 minutes on the side of the quiet road and there it is – the first vehicle. A huge, roaring truck. As trucks usually do, it stops in the middle of the Cambodian heat to take the weird looking boy and girl. On the front seats – three men and a woman. Wide smiley faces. They know no English and we know no Khmer. But one thing is clear – they like the watercolor sign and they are going to our destination. Moreover, they have space for 30 hitchhikers in the carriage on the back of the truck. Before we know it we are enjoying a free roller coaster experience, conveniently hidden from the noon sun.

This hitchhiking trip was one to remember – starting with travelling in an open-air carriage and ending with a lunch stop with our friendly hosts at a local restaurant. A fresh coconut, please!

I’ve accumulated many cool hitchhiking stories over the years! But my favorite by far was in the Canadian Rockies. My friend and I were pretty keen on going to Calgary Stampede. An old man picked us up. He was going all the way to Calgary, so it was a win-win. He told us about his wife and how they fell in love. This man was lovely and super interesting. He asked us what was our plan in Calgary and we told him about the stampede, which is a big rodeo event. It turned out his wife had free tickets that she wasn’t planning on using. He said he could actually go home to pick up the tickets and then drive us to the stampede.

Normally I would have said no, but we had a good feeling about this. We met his wife, we had a snack at their place and then we left for the stampede with free tickets in our hands. He was a bit worried we wouldn’t be able to find a ride back later on that night and gave us his business card so we could call him if we were desperate for a lift later, but in the end we didn’t need to call him. However, the best part of this experience was still to come!

Two weeks later, we were hitchhiking in another direction altogether. We were in the middle of a pretty remote town in British Columbia when an old lady started yelling at us. We were wondering what was going on and then she ran in our direction to talk to us. It was his wife. She recognized us and they invited us for lunch. What were the chances of seeing them again in another Canadian province! Bless them!

As much as I love hitchhiking, I also enjoy earning good karma by picking up hitchhikers when I’m driving. One of my favorite such stories happened when I was in a small town in the mountains of Bulgaria, struggling to find the road to a nearby mountain lodge.

While I was wondering whom to ask for directions, I saw three grannies waving by the roadside. I stopped to ask them, only to realize that they were actually hitchhiking, not waving, and in mere seconds all of them had already crammed into my car. It turned out they owned potato fields high in the mountains and they hitchhiked every single day to get there and take care of the crop. One of them took a particular shining to me and spent the whole journey trying to set me up with her grandson – with the aim of marrying me off to him, of course!

When I stopped to let them out, another threw a banknote into the car and dashed away. At my perplexed look, the third granny explained that the runaway hitchhiker had just received news of a newborn grand-grandson that morning and wanted me to drink a coffee to his health. So I did. Then I called my mom and told her that obviously hitchhiking is not as dangerous as she thinks – after all, these three ladies do it every day and they’ve reached a ripe old age!

Winter. It was getting dark. My husband and I were near the railway station of Sorrento, Italy, not even on the outskirts of the city, trying to catch a ride to Naples. My hands were buried in warm black gloves and nobody could see I was hitchhiking, so I decided to take them off. But then my hands turned blue from the cold, like a real-life Facebook “like” button. We spent more than an hour waiting in the cold, until finally an elderly couple stopped and picked us and immediately offered us some candies. They spoke only Italian, while we didn’t speak a word, so our conversation consisted entirely of gestures and mimicry. When we reached our destination, we took their address and later sent a small present to our saviors.

My mom and I were on a vacation in a small village in the Rhodopes Mountains in Bulgaria and had to get to a bigger town, Smolyan, 30 mi (50 km away). It was Saturday and there were no public buses running to our destination, so we hopped on a bus to the next village where, the locals swore, there was some kind of transport going to our destination. After having arrived in this other village, we were approached by a local elderly man who informed us that there were actually no buses for the next few hours. “So, let’s hitchhike,” my mom said (my mom is not the kind of person who would usually say this, so I was pretty surprised and amused). She raised a thumb by the road while I was taking photos of her. No car stopped. Then we swapped roles and I managed to stop the local bread delivery truck. It turned out that the driver had seen us in the first village and, with a slightly offended tone, asked us why we didn’t ask him to give us a lift. All the way I was holding a box of eggs so they didn’t break. The best part: when we hopped out of the truck, our suitcases smelled like freshly baked bread!

There are cities around the world that managed to become the biggest, the wealthiest, the best of the best in their own country, failing to achieve only one thing – to become a capital.

And as these cities are the best of the best, they are so famous, that people frequently confuse them for capitals. Have you fallen in this trap? Check your knowledge:

Is Rio de Janeiro the capital of Brazil?
