Welcome to the magical realm of Phuket, Thailand, a place famous for its beaches, nightlife, and colorful culture. But while many flock to soak up the sun on Patong Beach or indulge in the vibrant nightlife, a hidden adventure lies just beneath the surface—quite literally! Prepare yourself as we dive into the hidden caves of Phuket, where secrets of nature await, and adventure is just around the corner.

The Allure of the Underworld

Phuket isn’t just about beach bars and elephant tours; it’s also a playground for adventurers keen to discover what lies beneath its stunning exterior. The island has a plethora of secret caves that are waiting to be explored. Some are well-known, but many remain off the beaten track, accessible only to the fortunate few who dare to venture away from the crowded shorelines.

Why Caves?

You might be wondering, “Why would I want to explore caves when I can snack on mango sticky rice and bask in the sun?” And I get it; who wouldn’t want to lounge in a hammock with a coconut in hand? However, the thrill of discovering natural wonders and experiencing the unique ecosystems within caves is an adventure that adds an unforgettable chapter to your travel story.

Top Caves to Explore

Now, let’s talk about some of the hidden treasures you can find below Phuket’s surface—caves that might just be the highlight of your trip.

Phra Nang Cave

If you’re after a mix of culture and adventure, head to Phra Nang Cave. Located on the southern tip of Railay Beach, this cave isn’t just a geological wonder; it’s also a spiritual site where local fishermen pay respect to the spirit of the drowned princess, who is said to guide them safely home. Inside the cave, you’ll find offerings left by fishermen and mesmerizing rock formations that make for great photos (or perhaps a few awkward selfies). Just be careful; the cave can get slippery!

Emerald Cave

Another must-see is the Emerald Cave on Koh Mook, known for its radiant turquoise waters. Accessing this hidden gem requires a swim through a dark tunnel—think of it as your very own Indiana Jones moment. As you paddle through, keep your eyes peeled for signs of life; you might just spot some glowing plankton ready to light up your adventure!

Ao Phang Nga National Park

While not strictly a cave, Ao Phang Nga National Park is home to numerous caves and lagoons begging to be explored. The towering limestone cliffs create dramatic backdrops, while your kayak glides through serene waters. Don’t miss the chance to see the famous James Bond Island, where “The Man with the Golden Gun” was filmed. Just remember: trying to recreate Roger Moore’s iconic poses while in a kayak is not advisable.

What To Expect

Exploring caves is like opening a box of chocolates—sometimes you get sweet surprises, and other times, well, you get something a little nutty. Each cave offers its own unique environment, with formations that inspire awe and perhaps a few giggles. Expect to encounter stalactites and stalagmites, some like ancient chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, while others may resemble that creature you tried to forget from your childhood nightmares.

Safety First!

But adventuring is not without its risks! Always ensure you’re prepared with the right gear. A sturdy pair of shoes, a flashlight, and, most importantly, a buddy to share those inevitable “Did you hear that?” moments are essential. Hiring a local guide can also amplify your experience, as they can spot the hidden wonders you might miss—and assure you that the distant growl is probably just your stomach.

More Than Just Caves

After a day of navigating the depths, what’s better than rewarding yourself with a relaxing evening? Wrap up your adventurous day by heading back to the surface to enjoy the local cuisine. Sampling dishes like Tom Yum Goong and Pad Thai will make you appreciate Phuket even more. Pair these delights with some freshly prepared coconut ice cream, and you’ll be in culinary heaven.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it! Phuket isn’t just a tropical paradise for sunseekers; it’s also a hidden treasure trove of caves waiting to be explored. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a casual explorer, the island’s mysterious caves offer experiences that are worth every minute spent underground. Grab your gear, put on your explorer’s hat, and get ready to uncover the enchantment that lies beneath the surface of this stunning Thai island.

Happy adventuring!

From the ‘Unusual things to do in Sicily’ series.

Even if you whisper your secrets while you’re inside the Ear of Dionysius in Sicily (in Italian: Orecchio di Dionisio or Orecchio di Dionigi), everyone will hear them, no matter whether they are close to you or at the furthest end of the cave. This man-made rock formation in Syracuse (southern Sicily) is designed so that even the slightest mumble is amplified clearly.

The Ear of Dionysius in Syracuse, Sicily | © Maria Angelova/www.203challenges.com

The rumor:

Rumor has it that the local tyrant Dionysius I of Syracuse ordered the huge grotto hewn into the rocks to keep prisoners inside. The opening in the ceiling was specially designed for the tyrant to overhear the prisoners whispering their dirty secrets. Another, more disturbing version of the story says the perfect acoustics served as an ancient microphone for the screams of the prisoners.

The truth:

As interesting as this portrayal of the cunning ruler may be, there has been no proof that it really happened. Archaeologists have found out that the cave was in fact used to provide water storage for Syracuse. The entrance of the cave was formed after a major earthquake caused one of the walls to collapse and, for obvious reasons, it was no longer possible to store water here.

What you’ve missed:

Earlier in the tourism history of the Ear, it was possible to get to that tiny opening in the ceiling of the cave and, copying Dionysius, actually hear for yourself the secrets people were whispering down in the pit. For safety reasons, access to the opening was later forbidden.

Fun fact:

Italian painter Caravaggio visited the cave during his trip to Sicily and is suspected by many historians to be the author of the rumor that Dionysius tortured his prisoners there. While Caravaggio was on the island, he painted a few of his most famous works, including The Burial of Saint Lucia in the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia on Piazza Duomo in Syracuse. You can enter the church for free to admire the impressive painting.

Burial of Saint Lucia by Caravaggio (1608)

The challenge:

When I visited the cave, there was an opera singer in one of the tourist groups next to me. At one point the lady burst into song, creating some hauntingly beautiful tones that echoed in a most amazing way for a few seconds. So, the challenge is: get to the bottom of the cave and sing your favorite song in full voice. You can record it to remember the experience.

How to get to the Ear of Dionysius:

The Ear of Dionysius is located in the Greek archaeological complex in Syracuse (when you enter, just follow the signs for the Ear). The ticket for the whole complex – which consists of an ancient amphitheater, a rock-hewn fountain and many limestone formations – costs 10 euros. Spare at least three hours for the site. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat as the sun is merciless and there are few places to hide from it.

#1 Whisper your secrets at the Ear of Dionysius

During summer, locals and tourists alike flock to this beautiful spot as an alternative to the crowded beaches, although that’s not to say that the river doesn’t get crowded too. The canyons and rock formations are spectacular, but be warned… the water is absolutely freezing, even in the height of summer. Sports enthusiasts can entertain themselves with water sports such as group body rafting tours, while small kids can enjoy the spray water park. The park also has a restaurant and pizzeria. This is certainly a different side of Sicily and one I’d recommend if you’re in the area.

A monument both admired and called ‘the cement monster’, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears (Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime) is the last thing you would expect to see when you think of ‘a church in Sicily’. Its construction started in the 1960s and lasted for almost 30 years, when Pope John Paul II himself inaugurated it. The sanctuary was constructed to house a miraculous image of the Madonna, who was allegedly crying (even scientific tests were held to prove that the liquid coming form the image was tears). The best thing about this place of God is its incredible acoustics. Just sit for a while and listen to the echoes from every minor noise at the other side of the enormous building while looking at the ceiling, which soars to more than 70 m (230 ft) above you.

How about ticking ‘skiing down an active volcano’ off your bucket list? Mount Etna is not as fancy as the other Italian ski resorts, but it has slopes and offers magnificent views from its peak. On the other hand, the weather down by the coast will most likely be perfect for leisurely strolls, and the seawater in Sicily in winter will be warmer than the Danish Bryyge Islands in summer.

#6 Sing karaoke (but take it seriously!)

“One of my most bizarre experiences living in Catania (and there were many!) was when my friends and I went to Wednesday karaoke at a local bar,” Amy from Page Traveller says. “We ordered more than a few drinks so that we could perhaps muster up the courage to sing later on.

“However, what I learnt was that Italians take their karaoke very seriously. One woman chose a song with glass-shattering high notes and she hit them all. A large, uber-masculine type who wouldn’t look out of place in the Mafioso delivered a heartfelt ballad in a deep, gravelly voice. The audience members clapped politely.

“Oblivious to Sicilian karaoke culture and several vinos in, we Brits put ourselves down for classic belter Total Eclipse of the Heart, but our drunken rendition of Bonnie Tyler was met with much tutting and more than a few scornful looks.

“If you end up doing going to a karaoke night in Catania, be aware that you will be expected to actually sing well!”

With the very first steps you take in the village Orehovo, you realize that you haven’t traveled just roads – you’ve traveled back in time. In the center you’ll find a couple of shops selling hand-made bread with thick crispy crust, reminiscent of all the vacations spent in the countryside at grandma’s, as well as a traditional pub and a door with the sign “library” above one of the stores.

The slopes of the Rhodope Mountains rise like guards in the sky protecting the houses below. Just steps away is the edge of a centuries-old evergreen forest. In the vicinity, the landscape is dotted with more than 20 chapels, with the River Persena running through. Go to its bank on the other side and look at the houses perched on the slope, as if drawn on a postcard. Just then the thought of space crosses your mind: cosmic tranquility and perfect harmony.

There is one slightly creepy site of interest near Orehovo – Cheleveshka Cave (Human Cave), where many residents of the village were burnt during the Ottoman rule. Around 12 km from Orehovo you will find the remains of an ancient Roman road (follow the signs). Persenk mountain hut is within a 3-hour walk. Less than a kilometer from the village, below the peak of Oreshnitsa, is Duplevo Waterfall. Just 2 km from Orehovo is Skakaloto Waterfall (take the paved road to Persenk mountain hut, and after a turn take the marked trail, going steeply down).

Here are some of the most exciting activities in Tuolumne, California, from which you can pick the best for your personal bucket list.

#1 Go stargazing. With no city light bleed, this dark Northern California sky showcases millions of stars—a rarity in most cities. Outfitters provide guided stargazing hikes and tours with high-powered telescopes for planet tours.

#2 Walk in California’s largest underground cavern. Enjoy a 45-minute Family Walking Tour or a 3-hour Wild Cavern Adventure Trip including the historic 100′ spiral staircase.

#3 Go gold panning. Although the Fandango Halls and gun fights are but an eerie presence found in the ghost towns the miners abandoned, the boom of the 1849 Gold Rush left nuggets and frontier adventures behind. In Tuolumne County, several mines are still open that allow visitors to pan for gold, and there are several gold panning adventure companies that teach prospecting courses for adventurous miners who seek a true Gold Country experience.

#4 Travel back to the 1850’s at Columbia State Historic Park. Today the town still has the atmosphere, shops and activities of the olden times. Gold was discovered in Columbia in 1850. By 1870, the “Gem of the Southern Mines” produced more than $1 billion (in today’s figures).

Hundreds of movies and TV shows have been shot here.
#10 Head on a road trip (giant sequoias included). Venture along Highway 120 for the “front door” entrance to Yosemite National Park from the San Francisco Bay Area. The Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias is one of three groves to walk among these giants that can live to more than 3000 years old! You will have to hike just about 1.5 miles to reach the Tuolumne Grove but it will be well worth the work to enjoy these massively beautiful trees with a lot less crowds than the Mariposa Grove at the south end of the park.

#11 Escape the crowds of Yosemite Valley. Far from the crowds of Yosemite Valley, you can experience the abundance of waterfalls up-close and personal in the Hetch Hetchy section of the national park, easily accessible from Rush Creek Lodge’s location on Highway 120.

#12 Get in shape to see the iconic Half Dome in Yosemite. You can hike the 16-mile round trip to the top of the dome, but it is only recommended if you are in a shape for an extremely rigorous hike, and you need a permit.
