Bangkok is a city that never fails to dazzle. Known for its vibrant street life, eclectic cuisine, and ornate temples, it’s also a magnet for some of the most exciting and colorful festivals in the world. If you happen to be in Thailand’s capital, consider slipping your feet into a pair of dancing shoes or easing your tongue into spicy street food because the festivals in this city are something to behold!

The Songkran Festival: A Splash-Tacular New Year

Every April, Bangkok transforms into a water-filled wonderland as locals and tourists alike take part in the Songkran Festival, celebrating the traditional Thai New Year. This is not just any regular celebration; it turns the entire city into a gigantic water fight extravaganza.

Dousing your friends, family, and even unsuspecting strangers with water is not just accepted—it’s encouraged! Armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses, participants spray water everywhere. Streets may become rivers, and every corner could potentially turn into a battleground for the ultimate water showdown. Just remember: when in Bangkok, do as the Bangkokians do.

Beyond the soaking fun, this festival holds a deeper meaning. It’s a time for honoring elders, visiting temples, and cleansing oneself of past misdeeds to welcome the new year with fresh opportunities. So, while you’re busy soaking up the good times, don’t forget to pay your respects at a local temple or offer food to the monks. It’s a win-win situation: have fun and engage in some good karma!

Loy Krathong: The Festival of Lights

If you’re lucky enough to be in Bangkok during Loy Krathong, prepare for a sight that will take your breath away. Traditionally celebrated on the night of the full moon in November, Loy Krathong showcases countless floating lanterns lighting up the Chao Phraya River.

The night is filled with exquisite floating baskets (krathongs) adorned with flowers, candles, and incense. People send their krathongs down the river as a gesture of gratitude to the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha. You might even want to make a wish—who knows? It could come true!

As you stroll along the riverbanks, the atmosphere is charged with excitement. Capture that magical moment on your phone, or better yet, join the crowds and release your own lantern into the shimmering water. However, just a friendly reminder: no swimming with the fish after you’ve launched your krathong; they might not appreciate an unexpected splish-splash!

Chinese New Year: A Festival of Prosperity

Your adventure in Bangkok wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the Chinese New Year, which takes place between January and February, depending on the lunar calendar. The Yaowarat area, also known as Chinatown, turns into a fiery spectacle filled with dragon and lion dances, vibrant processions, and mouth-watering street food that will make your stomach growl louder than any dragon dance!

Prepare your taste buds for a whirlwind of flavors as you munch on traditional delicacies like dumplings, spring rolls, and golden cakes; trust us, you’ll want to follow the aromas wafting through the air. The atmosphere is electric, and the streets are lit with red lanterns everywhere you turn, symbolizing joy and good fortune.

You might even find yourself participating in a fun activity like throwing firecrackers. Just a word of caution: not everyone is a fan of the explosion sounds, so make sure there’s a festival spirit alive around before you pop those baby dragons!

Visakha Bucha: A Day of Reflection

For those who lean toward spiritual experiences, Visakha Bucha is a significant Buddhist festival not to be missed. Celebrated on the full moon day in May, it commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. Temples across Bangkok fill up with people wearing white, engaging in merit-making activities such as meditating and offering food to monks.

The heartwarming sight of people circumambulating the temples while carrying candles is a feast for the eyes. Join them as they walk in silent reverence, holding their candles high to illuminate their hopes and prayers. It’s a gentle reminder of how festivals can bring about introspection and connection.

Bangkok’s Hidden Gems and Local Festivals

While the big-name festivals certainly steal the limelight, Bangkok has an array of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Look for community celebrations, food festivals, or even small art fairs sprinkled throughout the city. These local events might not have the crowds, but they often present an authentic slice of Thai culture, including traditional dances and music performances.

Check out events like the Bangkok Design Week and the Bangkok Art Biennale for a blast of creativity mixed with local flavor. These contemporary festivals often invite you to connect with the city in a different light—not through water fights or lanterns, but through artistic expression and innovation.

Get Your Festival Gear Ready!

As you plan your visit to Bangkok, pack your sense of adventure and perhaps a waterproof case for your phone because you never know when a water fight might spring up! Whether you’re interested in cultural immersion, culinary explorations, or simply dancing your heart out in the streets, Bangkok’s festivals have something for everyone.

And who knows, by the end of your trip, you may just find yourself wishing for a splash of Songkran water or the glow of a Loy Krathong lantern long after you’ve returned home. Happy festival hopping!

It shelters many pieces of art, such as several paintings by Francisco Goya. The cathedral was built between 1262 and 1356.

National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts (Museo Nacional de Ceramica y de las Artes Suntuarias Gonzalès Marti) is a museum-palace, known for its huge entrance gate with marble sculptures. The building dates back to the XV century. Inside, there is a collection of ceramic items from prehistoric times until nowadays. On the first floor there is a huge ballroom, a living room and many other rooms. Here you can see an authentic kitchen, characteristic for Valencia, built entirely of decorated tiles with typical vessels and utensils.

La Lonja de la Seda is a silk exchange dating back to the XV century. The building is built in Gothic style. There are gorgons on its façade, while inside the walls are adorned with floral motifs and many detailed figures of animals and people. La Lonja is declared one of the most significant Gothic buildings in Europe.

Las Fallas is a festival of fireworks, incredible fire and pyrotechnics show, which has turned into a tradition for Valencia. It is organised on different dates every year, very often in April. The tradition derives from the past when people used to burn down the waste after the spring cleaning. Nowadays the festival continues for a whole week during which every one of the local communities prepares big sculptures of flammable materials, such as wood and papier-mâché, which are set on fire on the last day of the festival.

Bioparc Valencia is a different type of zoo because here the animals are walking freely in their natural habitat and you can even touch them. You are going to experience an unforgettable adventure.

La Albufera is the biggest lake in Spain. It is a wonderful place located only 12 km away from the city. A cozy beach, many birds, rice plantations, boat trips and delicious meals at the restaurants in the region. What more can one wish for? Here the sunrise and the sunset draw an unforgettable picture over the lake. Enjoy it!

Paella – You should definitely try paella while in Spain. There are different varieties of this traditional meal but the ingredients that are omnipresent include rice, saffron and olive oil. It can be garnished with different type of meat, vegetables and seafood. It is up to your personal taste and is also suitable for vegetarians. The residents of Valencia, on the other hand, claim that the meal was created in their city.

Siesta – after the nice lunch it is time for a brief rest – from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m., or longer, if you wish so. When in Spain, do it like the Spaniards and take advantage of the daily siesta. This is the time when the sun is the strongest, so what better way of escaping the heat than a nice nap.

Shopping in Valencia – souvenirs, t-shirts, jewellery, shoes, postcards, porcelain sets are found at the stores between the Central Market and Plaza Ayntamento. There are many stores in the passage between Plaza de la Virgin and Plaza de la Reina offering goods at good prices.
Nightlife in Valencia – Valencia meets everyone’s taste including in the night: house and jazz clubs, bars, restaurants, outdoor discotheques adorned with palm trees. You can choose entertainment pleasing your very own taste in one of the numerous clubs along the beach or in the outskirts of the city. The young Spaniards often gather in the open air at the squares and the streets in the night and have a beer or calimocho (a cocktail made of wine and coke) before heading to the discotheque after midnight.

Over the past years, though, the tradition has become a bit wilder – whether you’re an elder or not, expect water gun shoot-outs in the streets, whole buckets of water to be amicably poured over you or water balloons to be thrown at you.

Every year in April, Istanbul turns into the capital of tulips. This is when millions of bulbs show up in the parks and gardens of the city and transform old Constantinople into a flowery fairy tale.

In 2017, more than 26.5 million tulips of 160 varieties were planted across Istanbul.

If you are visiting the colorful fiesta that is the Istanbul Tulip Festival, here’s some useful information on where to go and what to see.

When do tulips in Istanbul bloom?

The exact date depends on the weather from year to year, but in general you can expect the tulips to start blooming at the end of March or the beginning of April. The flowers flourish for several weeks, until the beginning of May.

Tulips in Istanbul | Daxis/Flickr

What are the dates of the Istanbul Tulip Festival?

Usually, the festival spans the whole month of April. However, as you will see from the information below, you don’t need to plan your visit around any exact dates, as special events and brilliant spring flowers grace the city throughout the whole month. Although it’s called a ‘festival’, it would better be described as a rather loose series of events (like concerts, art workshops, and exhibitions) taking place mainly in Emirgan Park. The festival doesn’t have an official website, so the best way to discover what’s going on is to ask the staff at your hotel/hostel.

Why is the tulip a symbol of Istanbul?

The tulip is one of the most recognizable symbols of Istanbul. The flower was imported centuries ago from Iran, and its arrival created a real fever among locals, who competed to grow the best and most unusual bulbs in their gardens. A rare bulb could cost an absolute fortune at the height of tulip popularity in the city. Tulips made their way from Istanbul to Europe where, especially in the Netherlands, they caused a similar craze.

Tulips in Istanbul | Nezih Durmazlar/Flickr

Which parks in Istanbul have the most beautiful tulip gardens?

Emirgan Park (or Emirgan Korusu) – with its colorful pavilions, millions of tulips and other spring flowers, plus its stunning views over the Bosphorus, this park is the headquarters of the festival. Open stages pop up in April to host musicians, actors and other performers. You will also see traditional marble drawing demonstrations, calligraphy, glass blowing, and photo exhibitions.

Göztepe Park – This is the other festival hot spot, with plenty of events on its schedule. It is located on the Asian side of Istanbul.

Beykoz Korusu – This is another green oasis in the Asian part of Istanbul. Here you can enjoy relaxing walks along the Bosphorus, with the strait on one side and lush greenery on the other.

Gülhane Park – More than a million tulips are planted here every spring.

Yıldız Park – This park is located close to Yıldız Palace, hence the name. It used to be the sultan’s private hunting ground, but today its thick forest areas and Ottoman pavilions are open for visitors.

Sultanahmet Square – The square next to Sultanahmet Mosque – one of the main attractions in Istanbul – turns into a carpet of flowers in spring.

Çamlıca Hill – This hill is a secret part of Istanbul that few tourists ever visit. If you don’t mind a bit of a climb, you will be rewarded with the sight of thousands of tulips on the way up and a magnificent vista from the top.

The challenge: Wake up before dawn to join the rose picking ritual in the Rose Valley in Bulgaria

A visit to the Rose Valley in Bulgaria in May and June is a must. You’ll see, touch and smell the oil-bearing roses, whose aroma has made them famous around the world, especially for visitors from China and Japan. It’s easy to understand why so many tourists travel thousands of miles to come here.

Why is the Bulgarian rose so special?

The oil-bearing rose Rosa Damascena, grown in the Rose Valley, is a symbol of Bulgaria recognized across the world. It possesses great beauty and a unique fragrance, and is widely recognized as the only rose capable of producing the highest quality rose oil. We can prove it: in almost every expensive French perfume there are several milligrams of Bulgarian rose oil.

Amazingly, the precious liquid is also used as the finest grease in NASA’s space shuttles.

The Rose Valley, Bulgaria | © Maria Angelova/203challenges.com

How to join the rose picking at the Rose Festival?

The peak season for visiting Kazlanak, from the end of May until the end of June, coincides with the town’s Rose Festival, which has been held for more than a century. During this time, the town’s streets fill with the sweet fragrance of roses. Roll up your sleeves and help pick the rose petals, or see how the precious oil is extracted from the roses. There’s only one condition – you have to get up before sunrise to take part in the work.

Ask at your hotel what’s the nearest rose-picking event (they are usually held in a different village every Saturday and Sunday morning during the Rose Festival).

Rose oil distillation facility in Kazanlak, Bulgaria | © Maria Angelova/203challenges.com

Don’t miss Kazanlak’s Rose Museum, which displays more than 10,000 exhibits related to rose oil production. It’s the only one of its kind in the Balkans and is located in the Rose Park in the city.

What else can you do in the Rose Valley?

Kazanlak was crowned the capital of the Rose Valley a long time ago, but centuries earlier Thracian kings ruled their empire from this area. The UNESCO-listed Tomb of Kazanlak, located in Tyulbeto Park in the town center, is a masterpiece of antiquity with its exceptional frescoes.

Just a few kilometers from the town, submerged beneath the Koprinka Reservoir, the ancient city of Seuthopolis – the capital of the Odrysian kingdom – lies in its watery grave. Spread across the foot of the mountains, the Valley of the Thracian Kings is home to more than 1,500 Thracian mounds.
Fun fact…

A phial (“muskal” in Bulgarian) is a measurement unit of rose oil, equal to 4.810 grams. Until World War I, the oil was measured in phials (as gold is weighed in carats). One phial of pure rose oil was considered equal to 24 carats of gold.

Food from roses

The rose is not only used for fragrances in the Rose Valley. You can find it served on the table as well. Don’t leave the area without tasting the aromatic rose jam made from the rose petals and the rose liqueur that is a trade mark of the Rose Valley. You can try them during your visit of the Ethnographic Complex Kulata in Kazanlak, part of the History Museum (information here).
