Norway’s fjords are renowned for their staggering beauty and offer some of the most picturesque hiking trails in the world. With towering cliffs, deep blue waters, and lush greenery, these trails provide outdoor enthusiasts with unparalleled experiences amidst nature. Each trail has unique features, making them suitable for various skill levels and preferences.

The country is home to numerous national parks and protected areas that preserve its rich natural heritage. Trails wind through these pristine landscapes, inviting hikers to engage with the stunning fjord scenery while enjoying the thrill of exploration. The diversity in topography and ecosystems enriches the hiking experience, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn.

Among the best trails, the Besseggen Ridge trail stands out. This iconic trek offers a challenging route with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lakes, including the emerald-green Gjende Lake. It typically takes about six to eight hours to complete, making it a rewarding challenge for seasoned hikers.

Another gem is the Romsdalseggen Ridge hike, known for its dramatic landscapes and sweeping views of the Romsdal Valley. The trail features steep ascents and descents, rewarding hikers with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding fjords and mountains. It is best enjoyed during the summer months when the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities.

For those seeking something less strenuous, the picturesque Aurlandsdalen Valley offers an easier but equally stunning hiking experience. It features a well-marked trail along a historic trade route, with lush valleys and rich wildlife. This trail can be completed in around three to five hours, making it perfect for families or casual hikers.

Hiking in the fjords is not just about the trails but also the experience of immersing oneself in Norway’s unique culture and heritage. Many trails are lined with remnants of old farms and settlements, providing a glimpse into the life of previous generations. This combination of natural wonder and rich history makes hiking in Norway not just an activity but an exploration of the past.

Travelers should also plan ahead for their hiking trips. Weather in the fjords can be unpredictable, and it is crucial to check forecasts before setting out. Proper gear, including sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing, is essential to enjoy the hike safely. Additionally, it is recommended to inform someone of your hiking plans, especially for longer trails.

As interest in outdoor activities grows, more infrastructure and services are being developed in these regions. Local authorities are increasingly investing in facilities such as shelters and rest areas along popular trails to enhance the hiking experience. These enhancements make it easier for hikers to enjoy Norway’s stunning nature without compromising on safety and comfort.

In conclusion, Norway’s hiking trails in the fjords offer something for everyone, from exhilarating ridge walks to serene valley strolls. Each hike is a chance to connect with nature, challenge oneself, and appreciate the breathtaking landscapes that have made Norway a top destination for outdoor enthusiasts around the world.

What is the best time to hike in Norway’s fjords?

The best time to hike is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is generally milder and the trails are fully accessible.

Do I need special gear for hiking in Norway’s fjords?

It is recommended to wear sturdy hiking boots and carry weather-appropriate gear, including waterproof clothing, as conditions can change unexpectedly.

Are the trails suitable for families?

Many trails are family-friendly, particularly those that are less strenuous, like the Aurlandsdalen Valley, making them suitable for hikers of all skill levels.

The fact that we are constantly surrounded by splashing screens of modern gadgets has taken everybody back, but not the Scandinavians. They simply have everything taken care off. From perfectly organized social welfare, top-notch interior design to the notions of how to lead a spiritually and mindfully healthy and balanced life. The Nordic country Norway presents friluftsliv. An inspirational new notion, when translated means “free-air life”, suggest that we should go outside more often and reconnect without true self in the great outdoors.

Return to nature

The philosophy that is slightly hard to pronounce, “free-loofts-liv”, suggests going back to your roots and finding you inner peace in nature. Well, the great Scandinavians have got it right so many times, that there is no reason not to believe them now as well. The Norwegian philosophy friluftsliv was first conceptualized 150 years ago, and “leading and airy and outdoor life” remained as a pivotal idea to enjoy life. During winter, the freezing Oslo is totally covered with snow, but you will see people and kids roaming around streets playing out in the park and listening to the morning birdsong with a smile on their faces.

Go trekking and revel in fresh air

There are many ways to utterly incorporate friluftsliv. Maybe the most effective way to comprehend this Nordic notion is to spend quality time outdoors while getting involved in some kind of activity that you enjoy. And there is no better way to blend to two then by going trekking. To revel in fresh, clear air, you need to go to the strenuous and rocky mountains. Trekking is the best way to safely enjoy in your walk while you are grasping the surrounding natural marvels. If you need trekking poles, you might want to check out the best-rated ones on some of the review sites which are written by nature and sports enthusiast.

Embrace camping and backpacking

Even though this Nordic philosophy seems quite obsolete in today’s digital world, where our screen time tops up the time we spend outside. However, if we emphasize Nordic philosophy during summer or weekend, we will become more enriched, and inspirationally motivated and captivated. It’s perfectly normal for the Scandinavians to go for a walk through the forest after work, schedule a social gathering on the beach, or go camping the whole weekend with family and friends. Camping and backpacking are two connected activities that engage the entire family to do things together, return to their roots, and seize everything that nature offers them in return. Cook outside, tell jokes and stories around the campfire, and simply let loose.

Take indoor activities outside

For those people who don’t have that luck to live near the forest, mountainside or beach, you can still incorporate friluftsliv into your life by taking some of the indoor activities outside. Going fishing like the Nordics may not be possible, but instead running at the gym, you can call a group of friends and go brisk walking in the nearby park, play a game of football in the local court, or just go for an enticing picnic. Make your body the central tool of the day if you wish to embrace friluftsliv totally, and make sure that you at least go for a walk instead of eating unhealthy food and watching Netflix all afternoon.

Upscale your holiday

Make the most out of your holiday by following this Nordic philosophy and book an engaging and inspirational trip. Go somewhere where you can relish in outdoor activities and use up all the natural wonders. The lovers of an active holiday can go skiing, surfing, even bungee jumping, and extreme kayaking. Others who are not a fan of an action-packed holiday can take long walks in the forest, swim in rivers, or hike up a hill to enjoy a splendid view.

Don’t let rain or bad weather stop you to completely embrace friluftsliv. The Nordic people love to travel and be outside, follow their principle and implement a new and healthy lifestyle.

Norway, with its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultural tapestry, is a country that knows how to celebrate its heritage, creativity, and the enduring spirit of its people. Throughout the year, various festivals light up the country, showcasing everything from music and film to traditional Norse culture and cutting-edge art. For those eager to dive deep into the heart of Norway’s festive traditions and contemporary celebrations, small group tours of Norway offer an intimate and immersive way to experience the best of the country’s festivals. These tours provide not only a pathway to understanding the cultural nuances of Norway but also a chance to participate in the celebrations that define the Norwegian way of life.

The Bergen International Festival

Held in the historic city of Bergen, the Bergen International Festival is Norway’s premier celebration of the arts. Spanning two weeks in late May and early June, the festival features a wide array of performances, including music, theater, dance, opera, and visual art. The festival’s programming is diverse, aiming to bridge traditional and contemporary art forms, with events taking place in a variety of venues, from concert halls and galleries to more unconventional spaces around the city. Attending the Bergen International Festival is a highlight for any cultural enthusiast, offering a comprehensive look at the artistic innovation and classical traditions that coexist in Norway today.

The Oslo World Music Festival

Another standout event in Norway’s festival calendar is the Oslo World Music Festival. This festival transforms the capital into a global music hub for six days each autumn, showcasing artists from around the world. The festival’s mission is to present music that reflects the cultural diversity of the Oslo population, with a strong focus on genres that are often underrepresented in the mainstream music scene. From African beats and Latin rhythms to Eastern European melodies and Asian tunes, the Oslo World Music Festival is a testament to the power of music to bring people together, transcending borders and cultural differences.

The Sami Week in Tromsø

For those interested in exploring Norway’s indigenous culture, the Sami Week in Tromsø offers a unique opportunity. Coinciding with the National Sami Day on February 6th, this week-long celebration is dedicated to Sami culture, traditions, and people. Events include reindeer racing, lasso throwing competitions, Sami music and joik performances, and an indigenous film festival. The Sami Week provides a rare glimpse into the life of the Sami people, whose history and culture are deeply intertwined with the Nordic landscape. Participating in the Sami Week is not only a cultural experience but also a way to acknowledge and respect the heritage of Norway’s indigenous population.

The Norsk Hostfest in Minot

Though not located in Norway, the Norsk Hostfest in Minot, North Dakota, deserves mention for its role in celebrating Norwegian culture abroad. As North America’s largest Scandinavian festival, Hostfest is a testament to the enduring ties between Norway and the descendants of Norwegian immigrants. Held annually in the fall, the festival features Scandinavian music, dance, cuisine, and crafts, offering a slice of Norway to those who are far from its shores. For Norwegians and enthusiasts of Norwegian culture alike, the Norsk Hostfest is a bridge across the Atlantic, uniting people through shared heritage and celebration.

Midnight Sun Music Festival: Revealing Under the Sun at Night

In the land where the sun never sets during the summer months, the Midnight Sun Music Festival stands as a unique celebration that takes full advantage of Norway’s natural phenomenon. Held in the northern parts of Norway, where the sun remains visible at midnight, this festival offers an extraordinary experience for both performers and attendees. Imagine the enchantment of listening to live music performances under the soft glow of the midnight sun, in a setting where time seems to stand still. This festival not only showcases a diverse lineup of local and international artists but also celebrates the extraordinary beauty of Norway’s summer nights. The experience of dancing and reveling under a sun that refuses to dip below the horizon is a surreal reminder of the magic that festoons the Norwegian landscape, making the Midnight Sun Music Festival a must-visit for those seeking unforgettable moments.

The Viking Festival: A Leap Back to Norway’s Ancestral Roots

For history enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike, the Viking Festival offers a plunge into the valorous world of Norway’s ancestors. Held in various locations across the country, including the historically significant Gudvangen, this festival resurrects the Viking Age with remarkable authenticity. Visitors can walk through Viking camps, witness battle reenactments, partake in archery, and learn about ancient Norse crafts and daily life from experts dressed in period attire. The Viking Festival is more than a historical reenactment; it is a celebration of Norway’s rich ancestral heritage, offering insights into the skills, beliefs, and community spirit that shaped the Viking era. Through engaging storytelling, music, and traditional cuisine, the festival connects visitors with Norway’s storied past, making it a captivating experience for all ages.

Conclusion: A Symphony of FestivalsThe festivals of Norway stand as resplendent showcases of the nation’s cultural wealth, presenting a panorama of its artistic accomplishments, historical narratives, and the vibrant rhythm of contemporary life. From the illustrious performances in Bergen and Oslo to the cozy assemblies in Tromsø and other locales, these events embody the essence of Norwegian ethos—highlighting a deep-seated appreciation for community, innovation, and a broad spectrum of cultural expressions. For those exploring Norway, immersing oneself in these festivals presents a unique opportunity to engage directly with the country’s generous spirit, intricate cultural fabric, and welcoming people, leaving an indelible imprint of unforgettable memories long after the final notes have drifted away and the gatherings have concluded.

It`s minus nine degrees Celsius. The sky frowns over us and the wind blows fiercely in our faces.

But my Norwegian friends tell me the weather is perfect for a walk. And a walk in Norway usually entails at least 15 kilometers trekking in nature. Across slippery forest paths, frosty meadows and misty mountains. As the popular Norwegian saying notes: there`s no bad weather, only bad clothing.

Friluftsliv: Norway`s love for open-living

Living in the open air is like a religion in Norway. Chilly temperatures, dark rainy days and ferocious wind are no reason to hide at home.

The passion for nature is deeply ingrained in Norwegian (and Scandinavian) culture. There`s even a concept referring to it: friluftsliv that can be literally translated as open-air living.

The term was coined in the 1850s by the famous Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen. Friluftsliv for my thoughts is a concept that showed up in Ibsen`s poem On The Heights, telling a story of a man searching for solitude and clarity of mind in the great outdoors.

Nature as a source of energy

It`s not surprising that Norwegians cherish the great outdoors. Shaped by glacial and tectonic activities, Norway`s landscapes are harsh and dramatic. Nature is literally luring locals and travelers with its breathtaking fjords, glaciers, mountains, waterfalls, and coastlines.

The diverse and awe-inspiring landscapes offer endless opportunities for outdoor activities. All Norwegians are born with ski on their feet, as the popular local saying claims. And it`s no exaggeration: almost every local practices cross-country skiing, trail running, dog-sledding or at least hiking.

Loving nature from an early age

Love for nature is nurtured from an early age in Norway. Did you know that locals send their children to something that is called friluftsliv barnehage?

The term refers to a kindergarten in the open space. Kids are spending the whole day outside in the frosty weather and are encouraged to play in the forest and climb trees.

Inspired by the friluftsliv?

Sounds strange and a bit too much for you? Perhaps, it is. Especially for people with different cultural backgrounds.

But if you have time to watch Netflix after work, you can schedule some time for a walk in the nearest forest. Or at least the park if that`s easier. Wouldn`t hurt to try, right? Beware though: you might lose your bad mood.

Fishing is known to be an important part for many people from Norway and it plays an important part in the economy of the country as it has for hundreds of years now. Obviously, because of the cold weather, they had to adapt and they developed a very good system of ice fishing so they can do it all year long.

Still, not as many regular people as you’d think to go for ice fishing because of the famous Norwegian fjords that don’t freeze properly during the cold season. Since there is no ice, there is no ice fishing either, by default. But you can check the thousands of lakes across the country that do freeze in the cold season and which are highly popular with the locals.

People living in these areas have adapted with success to fish during the cold icy weather which led to the country’s ice fishing industry to thrive. The northern part of the country is the most popular place for this activity. If you’re interested in ice fishing in Norway, then here are the top spots to do so.

Tromsø

This municipality is also known as the “Gateway to the Arctic” and it’s the perfect place for anybody who wants to try ice fishing. From here you can see the Northern Lights while you visit the many frozen lakes of the area. Catching a popular fish like a coalfish, a trout or a cod is very likely in this Heaven-on-Earth area.

Lake Mjøsa

Near the small but beautiful town of Gjøvik, you can find Lake Mjøsa. This lake may be around a small town, but it’s the biggest lake in the entire country. Lake Mjøsa is situated in the southeastern part of Norway but it still gets enough ice during winter for the locals and you to go ice fishing with no problems.

Obviously, as a result of the large size it has, the lake is home to one of the biggest populations of fish in all of Norway. Lake Mjøsa is full of trout and perches that weigh more than four kilograms so you’ll have a satisfying catch probably every time you let the rod into the water.

Since you are in Gjøvik, you can also visit the world’s largest arena excavated in the rock, called Gjøvik Olympic Hall which is where the Lillehammer Winter Olympics ice hockey games took place in 1994.

Jonsvatnet

In the northern part of the country, you can find Lake Jonsvatnet which is close to one of Norway’s biggest municipalities, Trondheim. Being close to such a big city and having a popular fjord near it makes it a very popular spot for tourists and locals alike so it’s very easy to reach it even in the middle of winter.

This lake is also the main source of potable water for the city which is why there are some restrictions put in place when it comes to fishing, but this doesn’t make it any less of a popular spot for ice fishing for both the locals and the tourists that dare to face the cold winter weather.

Tinnsjå

Drive two hours West from the country’s capital, Oslo, and you’ll find Tinnsjå, the country’s third deepest lake. This lake offers you all that you would expect from ice fishing in Norway and even more as in 2005 a new species of fish was discovered here that is closely related to the Arctic char.

Not much has been discovered about this species since then so you can be one of the few people who managed to come close to solving the mystery of this fish.

It`s lunchtime. Carefully examining the menu, you crave a fine seafood meal to satisfy your hunger.

But there`s something extraordinary in the picture: you`re five meters below the surface of the North Sea. Sitting in Europe`s first and the world`s biggest underwater restaurant that is situated near the southernmost tip of Norway.

Eating underwater

Designed by the Norwegian architecture company Snøhetta, the restaurant named “Under” opened doors at the end of March this year. The award-winning Snøhetta became popular with projects like the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt, the Oslo Opera House, and the National September 11 Memorial Pavilion.
The restaurant building has an area of about 500 square meters that stretches over three levels and boasts seating capacity for 100 guests. Customers can enjoy an exquisite meal while seeing the surrounding marine life that is visible through the 11-meter panoramic window.

“Under is a natural progression of our experimentation with boundaries,” explains in a statement Snøhetta`s founder, Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, who was quoted by CNN Style.

Half of the building is submerged under water and guests can get into the restaurant through a special glass walkway that serves as a bridge between the coast and the entrance.
As far as architecture is concerned, the building is curved and thick, made of reinforced concrete. According to the senior architect, Rune Grasdal, who spoke to CNN Lifestyle, the goal was to withstand the water pressure and the waves.

IMAGE: Under (under.no)

What`s on the menu?

As you might expect, the menu offers lots of fresh seafood, fish and local ingredients. Except for the seafood and fish options, you`ll be able to try seabirds and sheep meat. “Under” is proud of its famous chef – Nicolai Ellitsgaard Pedersen. Pedersen has previously led the gourmet restaurant “Måltid” and worked for the Michelin-starred restaurant “Henne Kirkeby Kro” in Denmark.

However, the atmosphere and the imaginative kitchen come at a salty price – a full 18-course meal can cost up to 3,700 crowns (430 dollars) per person, drinks included.

Underwater restaurants around the world

If dining underwater is your thing, plan a trip to the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island hotel, where the “Ithaa Undersea Restaurant” serves caviar and Maldivian lobsters 16 feet under the sea level.

From chilly Norway through the sunny Maldives and all the way to the luxurious Dubai. The aquarium inside “Al Mahara in Dubai`s Burj Al Arab hotel” is worth a visit for its splendid views and tasty meal, consisting of tsarskaya oysters and sea salt-crusted sea bass.

The new Norway national tourist campaign offers you to see the beauty of the country through the eyes of 5 unusual sheep.

More than 2 million sheep spend the summer in Norway – grazing freely and gazing at the fjords, meadows and forests. Anyway, only five lucky ones become tourist guides.

Each sheep is located in a different area if Norway and has a camera broadcasting the landscapes as seen from the woolly wanderer. They can be spotted in the nature or in the vibrant city life of the capital Oslo.

One of the main rights existing in Norway is allemannsretten or the right to roam freely in nature. Since 1975, everyone has been able to enjoy nature, by walking, camping or picking berries and flowers, even in private property, as long as they don’t bother the owners.

This right to freely roam is the one that the sheep promote. The five guides have been carefully selected among the others, based on their fluffy and thick wool and their unusual lifestyles.

Here are the five sheep who present Norway in summer 2016:

Kari is located in Lofoten and she is keen on sports. She loves sunbathing and surfer boys on the beaches. As she lives very far north, she enjoys both the midnight summer sun and the northern lights.
