The pilgrimage itself is compulsory for the Muslims. As far as people preaching other religions are concerned, this is a fascinating encounter with an unknown culture. The Hajj is performed between the eighth and the thirteenth day of the Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. The exact date is different every year.

The Hajj includes the following rituals:

– Circle the Kaaba temple counter-clockwise seven times. In the past, the pilgrims had to kiss the Black Stone on the eastern part of the temple each time they make a full circuit. Practically, this is impossible, since literally millions of people join the ritual. Since several years ago, the ritual is optimised and instead of kissing the stone, it is enough to only point at it. The event is broadcasted live by several televisions in the world. Sometimes, so many pilgrims join the ritual that some of them have to go round the temple hundreds of meters away of it.

– Run back and forth between the Al-Safa and Al-Marwah hills.

– Drink water from the Zamzam well.

– Go to the Mount Arafat.

– Stoning of the Devil – in the past people used to throw the stones at high pillars but for security reasons over the past years the stones are thrown at low walls with catch basins below them to collect them.

After that the pilgrims shave their heads, make an animal sacrifice and celebrate the Eid al-Adha. The ritual killing of the animal can be done by any pilgrim or by a professional.

The story of the Black Stone

The Black Stone itself has an interesting story. Just like in any other religion, this most sacred element of the Islam is shrouded in mystery. It is believed that the stone is a meteorite that fell on the Earth many years ago. According to Islamic religion, on the other hand, it was sent by Allah to the Earth after Adam s original sin as a sign of care and reminder by the almighty powers.

If you decide to visit Mecca during the Hajj, you should be very careful because a large number of people die every year as a result of collapsed bridges, barriers, other facilities or stampedes.

In addition, if you are not a Muslim, you should avoid demonstrating disrespect towards the most sacred places of one of the biggest religions in the world through your behaviour or appearance. You shouldn’t do anything that you wouldn’t want any person of a different faith to at a temple of the religion you follow. And you should never forget that you are in Saudi Arabia, a country with severe laws, especially towards people who disregard Islam.

– What connects you with the Buddhist stupa near Sofia?

– We’ve been practicing Tibet Buddhism of the Diamond Way within the Karma Kagyu lineage for many years and this was one of the main reasons to shoot the movie The Jewel. It’s rare to have access with a camera so close to the building process. It’s important to clarify that the stupa is not a place of worship; it is a place of enlightenment and represents much more than its visible shape from stone and concrete. It is an embodiment of our inner striving to realize the full potential of the mind.

– How is the Buddhist philosophy perceived in Bulgaria?

– As a whole, Bulgarians are open to Buddhism. We often organize open lectures in Betahaus in Sofia where we see new people who want to learn more about it. However, we feel that the whole Western world has perplexed and sometimes exotic ideas about Buddhism. Most people consider all Eastern teachings as the same thing – be it Hinduism, Buddhism, etc., mainly due to the many new age trends that mix different philosophies, skillfully or not. Another common misconception is that Buddhism is a religion. In fact, it’s a teaching that is closer to a philosophy or a way of life. If we call it a religion, then it’s a religion focused on experience instead of faith because we check everything without blindly believing.

– What have you discovered about ancient Tibetian traditions during the shooting of the movie?

– This movie has taken us for the first time to India and Nepal, where the roots of Buddhism can be found. It was an exciting experience for both of us; a deeper insight into our practice and the history of Buddhist teachings. We have learned a lot about the symbolism of the stupa from Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche, the spiritual leader of the project, a respected Tibetan Buddhist lama who spent two months with us during the construction. It’s amazing to see so many people working for free in the name of a common goal.

– It’s always exciting to see the result of your efforts – both after the stupa was built and the movie was finished. Still, we want the audience to judge which moments in the movie touch them the most.

– What are some fun facts about the stupa?

– Maybe the most impressive fact is that people from all over the world took part in the building process, both with money and work. In our commercial world, it’s pleasant to see that idealism still exists.

Demir Baba Тeke has been considered a holy place in Bulgaria for 3,000 years – since the time of the ancient Thracians. The peculiar shrine nestled in greenery welcomes everyone, regardless of their religion, to be enchanted by a number of local legends.

Who was Demir Baba?

Demir Baba was an Alevi saint, a wise man and healer. The Alevis are followers of an isolated branch of Islam, famous for its tolerance towards all other religions. For example, these spiritual people describe the difference between their religion and Christianity as no thicker than “onion skin”.

Turbe – a heptagonal tomb

Teke (or khanqah, riban) – a holy place featuring a turbe of an Alevi saint

The turbe is Demir Baba’s tomb. It is built between two rocks, which once served as a Thracian sanctuary. Check out the house next to the tomb, where a small museum offers information about the Alevis and the life of Demir Baba.

The rituals

You can participate in the many rituals that still take place here. Legend has it that in one dry year, Demir Baba touched a rock with his palm. Water started flowing from the rock, creating the spring that now bubbles in the teke`s yard. Wash yourself three times and drink from the water (it is clean). Then, on the way to the teke, tie a cloth to a tree branch for good health. Look for the rock to the left of the turbe; people believe that if they lie here with their head down, then stand up without using their hands, they will be healthy. To the left of the building there is a wall with two holes. Stand a few steps away from the holes and, with your eyes closed, point to them with your index fingers. This tradition is known as “stabbing the witch’s eyes out”. According to the legend, only the righteous succeed.

Demir Baba teke is part of Sboryanovo Archeological Reserve, which also includes a UNESCO world heritage site – the Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari. Also of interest in the region are the remains of Helis, an ancient Thracian town from the 4th or 3rd century BC, believed to have been the capital of the Getae tribe. Make sure you go to the plateau above the teke to appreciate splendid panoramic views. If you want to see everything, it’s a good idea to spend a whole day in the area. It’s not too far between sights, but it’s best to have a car or a bike.

You can visit the teke at any time. It is 12 km from the town of Isperih, passing through the villages of Dragomazh and Malak Porovets. The road through the village of Sveshtari is the same length – 1.5 km from Isperih you will see a sign at the turn-off from the Isperih-Ruse road. Park your car by the grass area, where you’ll see summer houses and Thracian excavations, then take the stairs down to the teke. What is Semana Santa?

Semana Santa is the Easter holiday and is one of the biggest yearly celebrations. Classed as a holy week, schools are closed, and many Costa Ricans are off work. It’s a week-long period of celebrations – beginning on Palm Sunday and ending on Easter Sunday – making it popular time with tourists, too. This means that going on holiday to Costa Rica during March may cost you a little more. However, it’s worth it to witness the events and festivities!

Religious Celebrations

The week of Semana Santa is a riot of color, parades, processions and festivals. Held in cities across the country, the main celebrations take place on Thursday, Friday and Easter Sunday.

On Maundy Thursday, there are special services held in Catholic churches to mark Passover. But it’s on Friday that the real spirit of Semana Santa begins. On this day, you can witness colourful processions as locals come out to watch re-enactments of Jesus being mounted on the cross. It’s a serious and deeply religious affair, with mourners gathering and prayers said as biblical stories are portrayed.

These events lead up to a giant celebration on Easter Sunday. The end of Lent, fasts are broken, locals begin their feasts, there is cheer in the streets and church bells ring out.

Taste Traditional Foods

For tourists, one of the highlights for Semana Santa is the food – it’s a great opportunity to sample traditional cuisine. You’ll find a lot of seafood, particularly shrimp and fried fish, as well as a delicious array of desserts, with the most popular being empanadas (a type of sweet stuffed pastry) made using a seasonal squash called chiverre.

Things to Consider

If you go to Costa Rica during Semana Santa, there are a few things to remember.

Firstly, the sale of alcohol is often limited. In some places, it’s not sold for 48 hours, from midnight on Wednesday to midnight on Friday. Each county does have its own rules, so it’s worth checking before booking. Although in cities and busy tourist areas, this is likely to be less of an issue!

In addition, a lot of local businesses and banks close during this period. However, tourism focused places generally remain open.

Lastly, March is a very hot month for Costa Rica, with highs of up to 37 degrees Celsius! So, remember to pack your sun cream, spend time in the shade and drink plenty of fluids – that means water, not just alcohol!
