Australia is famed for its relaxed vibes and outstanding natural beauty, but don’t let that fool you for a second that there isn’t a wilder side to experience. Whether it’s catching a giant wave or taking care of horrific bathroom-dwelling spiders, the Aussies know how to get that much-needed burst of adrenaline.

Before You Go

Like any other trip, you’ll need to spend time planning to get the most out of the experience. In particular, you will need an updated passport and an eVisa Australia, depending on which country you’re departing from. If you’re coming from the UK, the tourist visa is free, but make sure you double-check online well before your departure date.

Wine Country Free Fall

Wine Country is a beautiful place to visit on the ground, but switch things up and get the heart pounding by visiting Yarra Valley Skydive. This fantastic experience will take you high above the wine fields before you tandem skydive for a 60-second freefall drifting for around 15,000 feet. While accompanied by a skydiving expert, you can just focus on enjoying the 220km/ph speeds and blissful views.

Bungee Jumping by AJ Hackett

Bungee jumping is one of the most exhilarating experiences on the planet. Attached to nothing but a length of bungee cord, take a 50m leap of faith to what appears like imminent death before being pulled back into the air. The only bungee experience in Australia is Sky Park by AJ Hackett, found near Cairns, which has been around since the 80s. As well as facilitating solo jumps, you can go tandem or enter the “Xander Zone” by riding a BMX off the ledge.

Harbour Bridge Climb at Night

The Sydney skyline is a beautiful sea of lights once darkness sets in, and it’s best to experience it from a decent height. Instead of scaling up an observation tower, experience a night tour climb of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which takes you 134 meters into the air for stunning panoramic views of the city.

A Pine Forest Zipline

Head to Trees Adventure in Western Australia and head up to the treetop rope course suspended above a pine forest. The park has a series of courses depending on the difficulty level, but there’s also around 1km of ziplines, making it the perfect adventure for any thrill seeker.

Take to the Skies in a Hot Air Balloon

Calming things down a little bit now because heading up in a hot air balloon isn’t “extreme”, but it’s still well worth a spot on any thrill seeker’s itinerary. However, as you drift high about the Barossa Valley to watch the sunset, just keep in mind that you’ve only got a wicker basket between you and meeting the ground – now tell us that hasn’t reached your inner thirst for adrenaline.

If this high list of activities doesn’t fill you with excitement, then we don’t know what will. Even though there’s much more adventure to be had in Australia, you’ll find these offer plenty of thrills to get you started.

Perched at an impressive 2743 m (9000 ft), high in the Italian Alps, the road turns sharply 48 times across its relatively short span of 24 km (14 mi). Passing this road is something of a ritual for motorists and motorcyclists.

Life is that much better when you’ve got a special someone to share it with. Romance can make your head swim, your tummy flutter and your heart beat faster. Humans are social creatures, and it’s our instinct to settle down with someone and partner for life. So if you’ve found that special someone, you should cherish them, celebrate them, and make falling in love over and over again a priority.

And nothing will cement a romance more than a romantic weekend trip away, and Melbourne is just the city to visit for a lover’s getaway. It is a city that has been voted amongst the world’s most ten liveable cities. Still, it’s just as enjoyable for a weekend visit. But Melbourne is a big place, with many things to see and do. You might be planning a trip here but find yourself at a loss about where to go and what to visit. Lucky for you, this helpful article will share what to see and do on a romantic weekend trip. Read on to discover more.

Book a Luxury Hotel

Your first step will be to find hotels in Melbourne. This will be your home base and a place you can return to late at night after a date to unwind and enjoy each other’s company. Staying in a luxurious hotel during your romantic weekend trip is just the ticket. You can enjoy a bath, pop a bottle of bubbly and unwind in extravagant glory. There are plenty of five-star hotels in Melbourne, so you’ll be spoiled for choice. Ideally, you’ll want to stay somewhere central, preferably in the CBD, close to some of the locations we’ll discuss in this article.

A hotel of choice in this city is the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. You’ll be treated like royalty by the attentive staff, enjoy your relaxation in a suite, and have a little love nest you can luxuriate in while you’re away.

Lunch and a Stroll in St Kilda

St Kilda is an iconic Melbourne destination, an affluent seaside suburb packed with great places to eat, bars to imbibe some refreshing drinks, and a beautiful beach to walk along. As part of your romantic getaway, you can catch a quick tram ride down to St Kilda, dine at your choice of restaurants for lunch and then enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach. Before heading home, grab an ice cream or gelato and a refreshing cup of coffee along Acland Street.

Browse the NGV and Fed Square Art Galleries

A perfect romantic adventure, you can head into the city, hopefully not far from your hotel, and browse the National Gallery of Victoria and the Federation Square galleries. The NGV is home to various art, from modern to classics, and will make for an enlightening date. If you’re lucky to be in Melbourne during a particular exhibition, you could even see some of the work of a famous artist.

Have a Picnic at the Royal Botanical Gardens

Depending on the weather, this could be an excellent romantic activity. Pack yourself a picnic basket filled with cheese, dips, bread, cured meats and fruit, and add a bottle of wine or bubbles to accompany it. The Royal Botanical Gardens are a short walk or tram ride from Melbourne’s CBD. The gardens are large enough that you’ll be able to find a secluded spot where you can sit down, feast and enjoy each other’s company.

Catch a Stunning View from the Skydeck

Located in Melbourne’s CBD, the Skydeck is at the top of the Eureka Tower and offers unparalleled cityscape views. There is a glass cube that you can walk into and take in the scenic views beneath your feet. The venue also offers cocktail and dinner packages, so you can turn this into a date night to remember.

Go on a River Cruise

The Yarra river runs throughout Melbourne, and you can take a cruise along it during the day, enjoying the warm sunshine reflecting off the waters. An evening cruise is also a great option, and you can see the city come to life as a million lights flicker on as the sun sets.

To make this a genuinely intimate event, charter a private boat, pack a basket with nibbles and drinks and enjoy the romantic atmosphere with your lover.

A Romantic Escape Awaits

This helpful article has shared what you can see and do on a romantic weekend trip to Melbourne. This is by no means an exhaustive list; you can see plenty of other activities and sights within Melbourne’s CBD or in the inner-city suburbs. You may want to take a spontaneous tram ride and see what you discover or even head out to some wineries in the country. Enjoy your time together in Melbourne, and return home full of love and gratitude.

The best way to explore Melbourne is to combine its most famous sites with the secret places only locals can show you. For the second part, let our local guide – Nick Johns-Wickberg – show you his favorite places.

The first place I’ll take you in Melbourne is… to the MCG, for an Australian football match. It’s not soccer, it’s not rugby and it’s not American football; it’s simply the best game is the world, and you’ll have to watch it to understand it. The atmosphere at the ‘G during a good game is something special.

The MCG in Melbourne | © Visit Victoria

Few people know that Melbourne… was called Batmania for a while. Seriously. We also have Batman Avenue, named after the same guy – John Batman. Whoever changed the city’s name to Melbourne should be ashamed of themselves!

When I want a little peace I go to… one of Melbourne’s many beautiful parks. Even in the middle of the city you can find a green oasis to help you recharge during your lunch break.

Carlton Gardens on the northeastern edge of the Melbourne CBD | © Visit Victoria

If you taste only one local dish, it should be… a barbeque cooked on a sunny day in a suburban backyard, one that has a Hill’s Hoist clothesline and a corrugated iron fence. It’s not about the food; it’s all about the classic Aussie atmosphere.

If you come to Melbourne, make sure you take a photo with… the Yarra River and the city skyline in the background.

You can tell that somebody is from Melbourne by… the way their shirt matches their hairstyle and their moustache. Tattoos, skinny jeans and thick-rimmed glasses are also signs that the person is a hipst- sorry, Melbournian…

The residents of Melbourne would never… admit that your city’s coffee is as good as theirs. Because it just isn’t. Sorry.

When I want to escape the crowds I go… anywhere in country Victoria. The area around Melbourne is so big and spacious that you can find peace and quiet pretty much wherever you go.

In spring you should… expect the unexpected. According to the famous saying, Melbourne weather gives you four seasons in one day, and spring is the most unpredictable time of the year.

In summer you should… wear sunscreen!

In autumn you should… check out the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. For nearly a month, you can find up to 100 comedy shows every night, all across for the city. Shows range from free local acts to gala performances by the world’s most famous comedians. It’s genuinely one of the best things in the world.

In winter you should… go to a footy match at the MCG!

The best day trip from Melbourne is… down the Great Ocean Road, which starts about two hours west of the city. The coastline is spectacular and you can do the drive over several days if you have the time.

Getting a public holiday because of a horse race (the Melbourne Cup)… is classic Melbourne.

If I wanted a beer, I’d go… to one of about 1000 places. Melbourne has way too many cool bars to choose from. I’ll go with Naked in the Sky on Brunswick St for its combination of tasty beer, cheap food and awesome views.

The view from Naked In The Sky | © Visit Victoria

If I wanted coffee and sweets, I’d go… anywhere in the inner-northern suburbs. We have such a strong café culture and there are so many interesting coffee shops – literally thousands in the city – that to single one out would be unfair. Brunswick St, Sydney Rd, High St and Lygon St are some of the best-known coffee strips.

It’s famed for its majestic Opera House, glorious Bondi Beach and, a bridge the locals call The Coathanger but hidden among Sydney’s more obvious attractions are a couple of more unusual things to see or do. Here are nine of them.

#1 Marvel at The Floating Forest

Located near Olympic Park, a short train ride from Sydney CBD, are some old shipwrecks – one of them with a difference. Definitely something to check out on your 482 visa. Over the years, the trees and bushes from the nearby mangrove swamps have taken root in the hull of the SS Ayrfield creating a mini-floating forest. While the tree ships look amazing all day, the absolute best time to visit them is sunset or sunrise when the golden light reflects them back beautifully in the water. Put SS Ayrfield in Google Maps to see where to go.

#2 Visit an Adult Fairground

Children might be allowed in Archie Brother’s Cirque Electriq until 8 pm, but after that, its big kids only as you drink hard-shakes topped with Tim Tams (a famous Australian biscuit), ride dodgems to your heart’s content and try and win enough tickets on the games of skill (or chance) as humanly possible. See more here.

#3 Spot the Sydney Seal

The Sydney Seal | Stilgherrian/Flickr

He’s totally wild so there’s no guarantee he’ll be there, but a New Zealand fur seal can be found lounging about on a set of steps just behind the Opera House. He’s so famous he’s even been in a Simpson’s cartoon. Look for the signs that say ‘Don’t Feed the Seal’ and you’re in the right place.

#4 Visit the Underwood Ark

Look down one of the side roads as you walk down Sydney’s busy George Street and you might do a double take. Way above your head, poking out the side of a building are some tree roots… wander down the road and you’ll realise it’s actually an entire tree suspended horizontally along an empty alleyway! Called the Underwood Ark it’s supposed to symbolise the old boat-building history of the area. Not sure if it does but it’s a good talking point. Find it at the junction of Dalley and Underwood Streets.

#5 Climb the Harbour Bridge Pylon

Sydeny Harbour Bridge | Jorge Láscar/Flickr

Everyone has heard about climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but fewer people know that you can get equally amazing views for a tiny percentage of the price if you climb the Pylon Lookout of the bridge instead. This costs just $15 yet still gives you an incredible 360-degree view of the harbour.

#6 Visit Wendy’s Secret Garden

Wendy’s Secret Garden | Teresa Parker/Flickr

When Wendy Whiteley’s husband died she threw herself into restoring the patch of land under their home – it’s now a quiet, peaceful garden with tiny fairies, old sinks and little silver owls among the hidden treasures scattered around for you to find in your own personal scavenger hunt. It’s a few minute’s walk away from North Sydney station or the Luna Park funfair which also offers the odd quirky thing to do – summer time sees them offering dining on their Ferris Wheel.

#7 Drink in a Viking Themed Bar

Where else, well in the Southern Hemisphere at least, are you going to get the chance to drink a beer from an old hunting horn or quaff cocktails containing bone broth, seawater or mead and honey? Mjolner is a super hip underground bar snuck behind a secret door between Sydney’s Redfern and Surry Hills. Should you also wish to feed your inner Viking, you can choose meat and cheese plates at the bar or go the whole hog (almost literally) with their carvery menu in the restaurant.

#8 Try a Silent Disco In The Street

Disco D Tours offer a one hour chance to dance your way around the historic Rocks area of Sydney, or more touristy Darling Harbour, grooving to sounds only you (and everyone else on your dance tour) can hear. Yes, at first it feels strange but you’ll quickly get over that and have the time of your life. From $35 a person.

#9 Hunt ghosts

Sometimes it seems that everywhere in Sydney has their own ghost but possibly the eeriest place you can visit to spot them is Q Station. This area, near Manly, is the old quarantine station where migrants suspected of possibly carrying disease were held before being allowed to enter Sydney itself. Obviously, a lot of those who came here never made that journey to Sydney and the site is said to be haunted by those left behind. You can tailor your ghost tour to your fear factor starting with just a few scary stories working up to full-on paranormal investigation. The truly brave can even sleep overnight in the old hospital on the grounds. Now, that is unusual.

Here’s a map of the spots mentioned above:

Australia’s North West is vast and far more extensive than the size of the United Kingdom. It has some of the world’s most stunning natural and ancient landscapes dating back billions of years. From the canyons of Karijini in Pilbara to the breathtaking Bungle Bungle Range in Kimberly, Australia’s North West has beautiful sceneries. Moreover, it has islands with world-class fishing.

Apart from prehistoric landscapes, Australia’s North West also has thriving wildlife, horizontal waterfalls, bustling cities, and different cultural experiences. This Northern Territory encompasses much of what gives Australia endless appeal and beauty.

North West Australia is among the most popular destinations for explorers, international visitors, and holidaymakers. It has a light plane network and a road network system, making it easier for visitors to move from one destination to the next as they explore the beautiful Northern Territory.

The Ideal Visiting Time

The best time to visit the North West region is around May to October when the season is dry. During this period, the days are warmer, and the nights are cooler. If you visit between November and April, you will likely find hot days, dramatic sunsets, balmy nights, and tropical downpours occasionally. During this season, waterfalls are at their peak. And, due to the heavy rainfall, some roads may be inaccessible.

Once you’ve arrived in North West Australia, you can hire transport providers like the Northfleet to help you explore the desserts, bushland, national parks, and the enormous winding tropical coastlines. A journey through the North Western Territory is truly a journey through history itself.

To explore Australia’s beautiful North West successfully, here’s an essential guide:

1. The Kimberly Region

The Australian North Western Kimberly Region is part of the Outback region with many unique and spectacular sites and sceneries. Despite covering around 424,517 square kilometers, it’s sparsely populated with less than 40,000 people. However, this doesn’t rule out the fact that it has beautiful natural wonders like the following:

Waterfalls

Caves

Gorges

Diverse wildlife

Visiting the Kimberly Region is an experience you’d not want to miss as long as you’re in Northern Australia. You’ll experience an ecstatic adventure that you’ll live to remember. Apart from the sites, this region is well known for economic activities like the following:

Construction

Tourism

Agriculture

Mining

Some of the places to consider visiting in North West Australia include the following:

The Horizontal Falls: This is one of the world’s greatest wonders.

Bungle Bungle Range: This landform was made from sandstones deposited 375 million years ago, forming the popular Devonian Reef System.

Windjana Gorge: An open-style Gorge which you can swim in; however, you must be aware of aggressive crocodiles. It’s 800 meters from the car park.

Mitchell River National Park: It has a breathtaking waterfall carved into the block, layered sandstone.

Broome: Famous for pearls and a recommendable holiday destination. You can also enjoy the following activities:

Whale watching tour

Small ship cruises

Village Visits

Snorkeling

Land and sea exploration

Cable Beach: This is where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets, ocean waves, and white sand. Apart from enjoying the waves and the beautiful ocean at this beach, you can also enjoy a camel riding experience along the coast.

Kununurra: It has beautiful wildlife, red hills, and breathtaking water crossing

Dampier Archipelago Island Reserves: It’s known for exquisite sand beaches, red cliffs, and turquoise water

El Questro Wilderness Park: A perfect place if you like an adventure. It’s approximately 700,000 acres with the following:

Broad tidal flats

Rugged sandstones

Thermal springs

Gorges

Permanent waterfalls

Rainforest pockets

From the above explanation, the Kimberly region is a place worth visiting. Many hotels are in the area, so you need not worry about accommodation.

Apart from that, there are many camping sites, some around the beach. They have running water and washrooms to ensure maximum comfort. While in the camping areas, you can view the stars coming out and the moon rising. You can also improvise by lighting a campfire at night to finish the day in style.

2. The Pilbara Region

The other region of North Western Australia is Pilbara. It covers more than 505,000 square kilometers of Western Australia. The Indian Ocean surrounds it to the North West, the Kimberly to the North, the Northern Territory to the East, the Gold Field Midwest, and Gas Khan to the South.

The Pilbara is an ancient land with iron mining being the main industry. It is characterized by a landscape of ancient rocks and stones, some estimated to be over three billion years old. Like the Kimberly region, Pilbara is sparsely populated, and most people there work for the mining industry.

As much as the area isn’t fully arid, it’s dry and scorching, with Marble Bar being the hottest town in the region. However, despite the hot climate, the Pilbara area has beautiful scenery and natural attractions over its vast expanses. Some of them include islands with white beaches and ancient rock art.

While it’s true that the area attracts many visitors for business, export construction, and mining purposes, you can still visit the place as a tourist. Some of the places you can consider exploring while in the area include the following:

Karijini National Park: It has breathtaking waterfalls, red cliffs, inviting gorges, and spectacular waterholes. It also has the second-highest mountain in West Australia, called Mt. Bruce. Thus, it has some of the best scenic walks and hiking trails.

Dampier Archipelago and Burrup Peninsula: These areas are known for ancient rock art with rock engravings that are more than one million in number.

The Mackerel Island: Here, you’ll get one of the best snorkeling and fishing experiences.

Millstream Chichester National Park: It’s famous for pools that are crystal clear, hiking trails, and serene gorges.

Karratha: It’s a city in the region known for its iron ore operations. It also has the North West Brewing Company, where you can enjoy locally brewed beer.

Port Headland: One of the world’s biggest export tonnage ports with big ships, which you’ll get to witness. You’ll also see the operations of the largest mining company in the world.

You can tell from the above that this is a unique place to explore the beautiful scenery and fantastic art. Moreover, you can learn about the Aboriginal history and culture, a dominant group in Pilbara.

Conclusion

Australia’s Nort West is a region where you’d like to explore. It has appealing landscapes, scenery, and natural attraction hence general breathtaking beauty. It’s divided into two regions: Kimberly and Pilbara. Each of them has different places to explore, as explained above.

And so, if you’re planning for North West Australia to be your next holiday destination, consider following the above exploration guide! It will help increase your chances of getting one of the best exploration experiences ever. Always remember, adventures are the best way to learn!

Road tripping is one of the best ways to explore Australia, as it allows you to see the many different faces of the country. When a bunch of Europeans head on an almost month-long road trip in Australia, culture shock and unexpected situations are par for the course (along with plenty of huggable koalas and deadly jellyfish). After completing such a trip in December and January 2018, we’ve decided to list a few useful tips to help you better prepare for your own Aussie adventure.

#1 Australians drive on the left side of the road. If you are used to driving on the other side, you may need some time to get used to this change. If you prefer camping – check Camper Champ, traveling in a motorhome is one of the best ways to travel.

#2 If you plan to visit Melbourne (and you should!), even if it’s summer, pack clothes for all types of weather, from early spring showers to baking summer sun, as the weather tends to change suddenly. It’s not a coincidence that they say: “If you don’t like the weather in Melbourne, just wait for ten minutes.”

#3 Trying to drive the Great Ocean Road in a day is crazy and draining – it’s worth spending a night or two along the way to fully immerse yourself in the amazing scenery. That’s why you should consider getting an aluminum roof top tent so that you’ll have no problems when the weather is changing.

#4 If you travel over the Christmas holidays, keep in mind that two days before and after Christmas and New Year’s Eve almost no shops are open, so stock up on food. Also, check the opening hours of local restaurants if you plan to dine out.

#5 If you want to hire a kayak, surfing equipment etc., you should usually get and return it between 9 am and 5 pm. It turned out that finding a rental kayak for a sunset tour was not an easy feat. It’s also important to call up at least one week in advance, especially in the high season, as you may find everything has been pre-booked.

#6 If you want to see kangaroos, koalas, wombats and penguins parading at sunset and other exotic (at least to foreigners) animals in their natural habitat, plan a trip to Phillip Island.

Philip Island, Australia | © www.203challenges.com

#7 For a chance to see and feed possums, head to Kalimna Woods Cottages at Lake’s Entrance.

#8 If you have included the Blue Mountains National Park in your itinerary, here is a useful tip to skip the crowds: choose a trail other than the Three Sisters Walk. All trails offer the same views but the Three Sisters Walk is the most overloaded with human traffic.

Blue Mountains, Australia | ©www.203challenges.com

#9 A stop in Sydney always includes a scenic view of the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House (and of the New Year’s fireworks above them if you have planned your visit to coincide with this major celebration). The best views are from Taronga Zoo, Kurraba Point or Robertsons Point. Some people arrive at these viewpoints hours in advance to spend the whole New Year’s Eve there, but you can also arrive at the last minute and it will still be easy to find a good vantage spot.

#10 In every single AirBnB we rented, there were cockroaches, every time getting bigger and bigger. It’s a good idea to buy some anti-cockroach spray if you can’t stand the sight of a huge bug on your wall.

#11 Include a stopover at Byron Bay – a coastal town full of people from all over the world who have come here to make their dreams come true. It’s a lively and inspiring place famed for its hippy, alternative atmosphere and beaches that are perfect for surfing.

#12 Always read the signs on the beach carefully because they tell you if there are jellyfish or anything dangerous/poisonous in the water. If you see a picture-perfect beach with nobody in the water, always suspect that there may be a sign you have missed.

#13 If you are a cruise lover ready to see the Great Barrier Reef, you can book a two- or three-day sea tour in Cairns, where you actually spend the night on a ship and enjoy diving three times a day, including night diving. If you are restricted by time, you can go diving on a single-day tour, too. Although Cairns is most famous for its surfing spots, don’t miss Kuranda Rainforest Village only 25 km (15 mi) from Cairns (and don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent and plenty of water).

At Navagio Beach (literally translated as Shipwreck Beach), you will see the remains of a vessel called MV Panagiotis, which washed ashore many years ago. It sunk in 1980, and rumor has it that its freight consisted mainly of contraband cigarettes, although there’s little evidence of that beyond the power of a good urban legend. You can take a peek from the high cliffs above, or reach the shipwreck by boat.

Outside the town of Muynak (or Moynaq) in Uzbekistan, as you head towards the Aral Sea, you will witness a sinister sight along the road: the skeletons of ships and fishing boats abandoned long ago in the desert. Up until about 30 years ago, Muynak was a sea harbor, but today it lies in the middle of the desert – 50 km (30 mi) from the coast – after the rivers were diverted for irrigation purposes. This environmentally dubious piece of policy has turned the road leading to the Aral Sea into a ship graveyard.
