The capital of Belgium has its very own beach at Beco Quay (Quai de Beco) – every year for a month a real beach appears, featuring huge stretches of sand, palm-trees, exotic plants… Visitors play beach volleyball and beach soccer, or cool off by splashing about in fountains and pools.

You may think you’re too far north to afford the luxury of going for a swim in the open, but that’s because you haven’t been to Brygge Islands – a wonderful free pool by the harbor in central Copenhagen. The water is clear and refreshing, but you probably won’t want to jump off the quay and into the water unless you visit in July or August.

The closest coast is 200 km (124 mi) from Paris, but that doesn’t stop the French. For four weeks from late July, several tons of sand are pumped onto the Seine’s banks in the French capital. More than 2 km (1,5 mi) of sandy beaches invite all those citizens and guests who are exhausted from the heat to enjoy a Seine-side holiday. The beaches bustle with free classes, rollerbladers, cyclists, a mobile library and plenty of people enjoying other fun activities.

Besides being the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern, this is also the day which marks the link between people, the Earth, and the Sun, and is celebrated with dances, bonfire, making wreaths, gathering healing plants and herbs, performing magic and mystical rituals…

Use every occasion to fill your smog-clogged lungs with fresh air. Choose a nature spot with a spectacular sunrise view to greet the first rays of the sun. Breathe in the smell of wild flowers, feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, hear the birds’ songs. This is more practicing mindfulness than a ritual but still counts.

Gather medicinal plants for their healing powers like a Bulgarian

In many places, the night of St. John (June 24) is considered a magical one when the medicinal plants double their power. Women wake up before the rooster crows to gather plants and hang them over the doorstep of their home to keep witches away (in case you have had any problematic witches in your life recently, now you know the remedy!). In Bulgaria, for example, the plants have to be 77. Additionally, a small flower bunch is left in a container of water to spend the night under the stars. This bouquet is kept throughout the year as a personal talisman.

The date is 3 June every year.

The place – the remote village of Bulgari.

Accompanied by the sounds of the drum and bagpipes, the fire dancers – called nestinari, are stepping into the embers. They have been keeping the secrets of their mystic ritual for centuries – ever since the time when the Thracian priests were trying to connect with their gods.

This ritual is not just a dance in the embers. It unites legends, rituals, memories and prophecies for the future. What are the secrets of the nestinari and what happens in the beginning of June in the heart of Strandzha Mountain – join us on a journey through the secrets of the ancient rituals.

Kosti, Kondolovo, Bulgari, Gramatikovo and Slivarovo – these are the last five nestinari villages. Every year, the people from these villages made a procession, bringing the icons of Saints Constantine and Helena to the Vlahov Dol area (located almost in the middle of the mountain). Each village had its own wooden bed, on which the icon was placed after being ritually washed. After that, they would perform a korban (animal sacrifice) and finally dance on the hot coals. Unfortunately, this tradition was interrupted in 1941.

Nowadays the last place in Bulgaria where nestinari dances are held is the village of Bulgari. The processions from the five nestinari villages to Vlahov Dol were started again a few years ago (on the last Sunday before 3 June), but the fire dance can only be seen in Bulgari.

Few people know that the nestinari ritual used to last seven full days. Due to the persecution of the nestinari it was shortened to three days, while today it lasts only one.

Not just dancing on fire

Many restaurants at Bulgarian the seaside have shows with dancers on embers but they have nothing to do with the original tradition. Since ancient times, divination is at the heart of the ritual. The nestinari community used to have its own secret life, guided by the lead nestinar. It was lead by a special nestinari calendar and mystic rituals and divination about the future were done throughout the whole year. The peak moment was the day of Sts. Constantine and Helena – 3 June.

It all began thousands of years ago…

Nobody knows exactly when our ancestors danced in the fire for the first time. It is known that thousands of years ago the ancient Thracian tribes performed rituals in the fire as part of their cult of the sun. The circle of fire on the ground was a reflection of the fire disc in the sky. At that time only the king-priest had the right to step on the coals and come into contact with the gods.

Gradually, the pagan nestinari ritual began to Christianize. When the Roman emperor Constantine the Great proclaimed Christianity an equal religion in the fourth century, the nestinari dedicated their dance in the embers to him and his mother Helena as a token of gratitude. Over time the dance acquired some Christian elements, but it was never accepted by the church.

What exactly happens on 3 June?

On the day of Saints Constantine and Helena, early in the morning, the icons of the saints are brought out of the church and taken to the konak building in Bulgari village (a small building in which the main nestinar woman is preparing for the dance). The icons are then draped in red fabric and the nestinari procession heads to the chapel of Saint Constantine, which is located in the forest by the village. There the procession circles the chapel three times counterclockwise, the people pour themselves healing water from a spring and the icon is returned to the konak.

The main nestinar woman (or man) spends the entire day in the konak, where she focuses, prays and prepares to go into a trance. After dark, to the sounds of the drum and bagpipe, she begins making vocal sounds, through which she controls her breathing but also, it is said, communicates with the universe. The nestinari leave the konak in a solemn procession and do three rounds of the church and three rounds of the coals.

After that, the actual dance begins and it lasts 5-10 minutes. Starting from the oldest one, the nestinari pass barefoot through the fiery circle, with the icon in their hands. Finally, the nestinari horo (traditional folk dance) is danced around the fire and everyone else who knows the steps can also join the nestinari.

Nestinari melodies and dances

All fire dancing rituals are performed to the sounds of the holy drum (that is kept in the konak year-round) and the bagpipe. There are three nestinari melodies. The first one is played when the icons are taken from the church on the morning of 3 June. The second one – when the nestinari are getting ready to step into the fire. The third one – during the actual dance in the embers. It is interesting that the nestinari horo begins with the left foot – in Strandzha only two folklore dances start with the left foot, both of them ritual ones.

The last nestinari

In the past, the nestinari ritual used to be passed on through the generations. During the communist period it was forbidden by the authorities and the tradition was broken until the beginning of the 90s. Despite that in 1964 a film was made about the last two nestinari women – Babini Slatini (the film is kept in the town hall of Bulgari).

Nowadays the dances in Bulgari village are not performed by the children of the nestinari families.

In 2009, UNESCO entered nestinari dances in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Why is the Jerma Canyon so memorable?

The festival activities

A team of adventurers, experienced guides and instructors will introduce you to the landscape and take you on a series of adventures, including:

Mountaineering – Hike up the mountains that guard the Jerma River to enjoy astonishing views of the canyon from great heights.

Sky running – Explore the landscapes of Jerma in trail shoes and experience the magic of running in a completely pure environment. Trail and sky running is guided by Nevena Rajovic, the winner of Skyrunning League Serbia in 2016. You‘ll get a chance to familiarize yourself with the region, as well as learning new techniques, stretches and power exercises in the midst of the incredible landscape.

Climbing festival (August 18-20) – Try 20 new, challenging routes and compete for one of the delightful traditional prizes on offer. These unique prizes are typical of the Pirot region of Serbia and are made specially for the event.

Sport climbing and abseiling for kids and adults – Take your first steps up the mountainside with the experienced instructors and trainers of Tribe, whose expertise and focus on safety will make sure you’re well looked after. Sport climbing is one of four basic sports on offer for kids in Jerma.

Mountain biking – The only thing you need is a bike and you‘re ready for the off-road adventure. You‘ll be riding through the narrowest gorge in Europe, with the trail even snaking through the famous Cira train tunnels along the way. You can ride along the trail – which is also the route for the upcoming Caribrod mountain biking marathon – at your own leisure.

Wild caving – Vetrena Dupka, the cave at the slopes of Vlaska Mountain, is ready to reveal the secrets of the priest Martin’s treasure. You’ll learn the story of the treasure and explore the cave with experienced speleologists, who will introduce you to the basics of caving and explain what to do (and what not to do) when you’re deep underground.

Yoga – Here you can learn the basics of Hatha and Vinyasa yoga in a breathtaking setting. Simply spending time in nature can relieve stress, improve mood, reduce anger and aggression, boost happiness and improve the immune system. When you add yoga asanas under the sky, pranayama and meditation, you have a recipe for pure bliss.

Slacklining workshop – Slacklining is the art of walking and balancing along a suspended length of flat webbing. It’s the kind of activity you can use to relax after a long day, or you can take it more seriously and commit to practicing your balance and technique over several hours. Slacklining can be viewed as a metaphor for life: balance is the core, but falling occasionally helps you master the art of rising and persisting. The mountainous landscape of Jerma provides the perfect setting for learning to slackline.

Extra activities – Art workshops, music, gastronomy, movies, chats by the fire, horror stories in the dark, reading, storytelling, dreaming, holding hands, eyegazing, stargazing… what you get up to in this magical part of the world is entirely up to you!

La Tomatina (Spain)

This is the biggest tomato fight. Every year, thousands of tomato fans arrive in the village of Buñol, close to Valencia, Spain to take part in the epic tomato fight – La Tomatina. More than 30,000 people wait impatiently for the flare signalling the start the fight, and several trucks haul the tomatoes used in the fight. It takes place on the last Wednesday in August.

Burning Man (USA)

This festival is a must for every free spirit. It’s hard to put into words, so you have to be there to understand what exactly this event is all about. For two weeks each year, tens of thousands of people gather in the desert near the city of Reno, USA, to create a temporary metropolis dedicated to exchanging knowledge, skills, creativity and art. Nothing is sold, there are only acts of gift giving. The culmination of the event is the symbolic ritual burning of a large wooden effigy – “the Man”, from whence comes the name of the festival.

The New Year in Thailand, celebrated on 13th April, has turned into great fun for locals and visitors. The Thai people pay reverence to Buddha, clean their houses and pour water over elders as a way to show respect. Over the past years, though, the tradition has become a bit wilder – whether you’re an elder or not, expect water gun shoot-outs in the streets, whole buckets of water to be amicably poured over you or water balloons to be thrown at you.

This is the name of the biggest fire-Viking creation of Scotland. A festival where every year a whole galley (Viking long ship) is burnt down. 1. Go to a festival

 It’s the beginning of the summer and you just wanna be outside, spending time with friends and enjoying the finer things in life. That’s exactly what summer festivals are all about. There are many types of festival to choose from – whether it be music, movies, arts or food, there’s nothing better than ignoring the real world for a while and just sinking into the relaxing atmosphere of a festival. Just imagine; you can immerse yourself in a place filled only with things you’re passionate about and people who share your passions.

Step up your game: go to a bizarre festival – it’s a big world and crazy festivals are lurking around every corner.

• An idea: San Vino Wine Fight Festival in Haro, La Rioja, Spain – to be held this year between 27 and 30 June. People of all ages (including the mayor of the town) gather dressed in white T-shirts, bringing jugs, bottles and water pistols. They fill these containers with red wine and then spray that wine over each other… ‘cuz, you know, why drink wine from a fine glass when you can use it to paint your friend (or a complete stranger)?

2. Find your own secret place

If I tell you about individual places here, they won’t be secret and they won’t be yours. I can, however, give you tips on how to find a secret place all for yourself:

• You don’t have to be Columbus to discover a place no one knows about. Sometimes great spots can be found just a couple of steps away from more popular ones, and yet barely anyone knows about them – those can become your magical, private hideouts.
• Once you’ve discovered a secret spot you’ve got to personalize it to make it your own, according to your own interests and needs. If you are a sportsperson, you might look for the perfect spot to practice your favorite sport. If you need some alone time just take a hammock and a book and spend the afternoon there. You can also use it as a place for friends or family meet-ups – just make them swear not to tell anyone else about your secret spot!

Step up your game: discover your hidden place on your own and then, on a special occasion, ‘kidnap’ a friend, take them there and throw a mini party for them.

3. Celebrate the summer solstice.

This is your chance to expose yourself to as much daylight as possible during the day when we get the most of it. A lot of festivals and events worldwide revolve around the longest day of the year, which has been celebrated since ancient times by people of almost every nationality.

Step up your game: be in the right place at the right time. On the morning of the summer solstice, if you stand in the center of Stonehenge facing north-east, you can see the Heel Stone – it is outside the circle and marks the point where the sun rises, creating a magnificent spectacle as it appears.

4. Get into a story.

Go to a place that can tell you a story. There are many options here – a place with an interesting legend, the scene of a famous film or the setting that inspired your favorite book. You could even follow the steps of your favorite artists or celebrities – visit their homes or their favorite places.

Step up your game:

• Create your own fictional story about the place you’re visiting.
• Make a short film about your trip.
• Draw a caricature of something interesting that happened on the road.

We contacted festival manager Petio Petkov to share his insights, tips and favorite drone movie trends.

– What makes drone filming so popular these days? 

– I personally think it’s the freedom that drones give us as humans in our everlasting quest for the skies. Drones democratize the sky and give us an ability to look at our lives and our everyday surroundings from a different perspective. They turn things upside-down – literally!

– What’s the secret to making a drone movie stand out from the crowd?

– It’s really no different than the secret of making any film stand out. It’s telling a good story. It’s being relatable. It’s capturing and portraying the grey zone in between the magic and ordinariness that constitute every single one of us.

– What’s the best drone footage you’ve seen recently?

– There is realty so much good stuff out there. In reality, I think the best part of it is to see the speed in which this niche genre is developing. The quality of drone film-making is getting better each year. The level of this year’s films submitted for DroneUp is already so much higher than the first edition. But I wouldn’t/couldn’t be partial towards a specific film while in my role as a festival organizer…

– What kind of locations do people most enjoy seeing from above?

– Their own childhood street! I think that’s exactly where the magic of aerial filming lies – in its ability to show you your everyday life from a new vantage point. Things that you normally may find trivial become new, unseen. I mean, let’s face it, who among us hasn’t always wanted to see what it is like to be a bird … and what they consider to be their toilet… which is virtually everywhere… pure bastards 🙂

– You’ve seen many drone movies. What are some creative approaches that have impressed you?

– Personally, coming from a musical background, I really enjoy when filmmakers use music creatively. When they stray away from the somewhat routine “string quartet” soundtrack and venture into new approaches of merging sound and picture into more dynamic and creative works.

– How do you imagine the future of this genre of entertainment?

– We’ve only seen the very beginning of this world. Drones and aerial photography/cinematography open up completely new gates, especially now with the development and accessibility of virtual reality technology. It’s an exciting time to fly. As we all know, the future is not what it used to be…

– What was the feedback from your festival’s first edition? What do you expect this year?

– DroneUp was really received well. Creatively, we’ve had film submissions from every corner of the world, despite being a ‘young’ festival. I think we really managed to create a film festival which wasn’t a closed event for a narrow film industry elite, but rather became a public celebration of the art and creativity of aerial cinematography. This year, we will stay true to this mission, but we will also try to make the festival more interactive. We will be hosting numerous drone demos, exhibitions, workshops and competitions, which I think will give our audience a more first-hand experience.

– Tell us a bit more about the team behind it.

– The team consists of young, international event management professionals. The funny thing is that none of us are actual drone pilots – we are ‘just’ passionate about creating great live experiences, which I truly think DroneUp has become!

The legendary Glastonbury festival, held at the end of June, features one of the world’s best live music line-ups, as well as a host of comedy, theater, cabaret and other performances.

Location

The festival is located in the southwest of England near a small village called Pilton, six miles east of Glastonbury town. There’s not much to see in Pilton, but the town of Glastonbury itself offers plenty of landmarks worth checking out if you need a break from the madness and mud of the festival. The church of St. John the Baptist, the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, the George Hotel and the Pilgrim’s Inn are among the iconic town’s must-see spots.

Line-up

Every year, the festival features a mind-bending line-up of some of the world’s biggest pop, rock, dance and hip hop artists. Over the past five years these grounds have been host to Muse, U2, Pharrell Williams, The Rolling Stones, Kanye West, Skrillex, Lana Del Rey and many, many more. The star line-up draws a lot of attention, with the number of visitors each year ranging from 120,000 to 140,000 people.

Accessibility

The fastest way to get to the festival is by air, with Bristol International Airport the closest major hub in the region. A bus link from the airport takes you to Bristol Temple Meads railway and bus station. From there, you can catch regular buses and trains to the special station by the festival ground. If you’re considering going by car, be advised that a car pass for the festival costs £45.

Costs

This year, the ticket price for the festival is £238 plus a small booking fee of £5. That covers the whole festival, as you can’t buy tickets for separate days. Every festival ticket includes a camping pass, with caravans also welcome at campsites. If you prefer to stay indoors, the city of Glastonbury offers plenty of accommodation during festival time, with hotel prices ranging from £50 to £150.

Because of its huge popularity, the 2017 edition is already sold out. Featuring acts such as Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Ed Sheeran and Major Lazer, Glastonbury is sure to be a memorable start to the summer for those lucky enough to go. It’s summer. You feel like you want to go somewhere and have a great time but you have trouble figuring out where? Well, we have a solution. Novi Sad, Serbia, might not be the first place that comes to your mind but what started off as a student movement for democracy in 2000 is now one of the biggest summer music festivals in Europe!

Location

The festival is hosted at the Petrovaradin Fortress that overlooks the city of Novi Sad. The fortress is placed on the right bank of the Danube river (Sziget is another music festival that takes place on the banks of the Danube). You can visit museums and the old city center in Novi Sad but you won’t get bored if you stay inside the fortress, as a museum of the city of Novi Sad, the Academy of Arts, and an observatory are located there.

Line-up

Lots of different genres and renowned world artists perform on several stages. The main stage has all the big names while the dance area with its capacity of 25,000 people has gained as much attention as the main stage in recent years. The party there does not stop until dawn! Most of the metal/punk bands perform on the Explosive stage. The fusion stage provides a stage for a lot of alternative and pop-rock Serbian and World bands.

Accessibility

The festival is fairly easy to reach. The city of Novi Sad doesn’t have a big airport so the easiest way to get there is through Belgrade and then 55 miles/90 km to the north. If you rent a car, the trip will last for about an hour. Buses to Novi Sad leave from Belgrade every 20-30 minutes. Tickets can be bought 1-2 hours before departure.

Money cost

Serbia is an affordable country so the costs for the stay are modest. A night at a guesthouse ranges from 25 to 40 euros per night. The five-day festival ticket costs 125 euros per person, and resepctively 160 euros per person if it includes camping. Food and beverage prices in the festival area are modest. Have in mind that spirits stronger than beer and wine are prohibited inside the festival grounds. There’s a token system to reduce lining for beer, wine, energy drinks or juice.

Exit Festival 2018 Edition: The line-up for the 2018 Exit festival includes The Killers, Years & Years,  Rag’n’Bone man, Alan Walker. The 12th to 15th of July is all the time you need to visit Serbia and this amazing festival!
