Since the first time we heard about the ancient cultures of the Ozieri and the Nuragic civilizations, who used to live on the island of Sardinia, we knew the remains of their imposing buildings, temples and burial sites would be the highlights of our road trip in North Sardinia. One of the symbols of Sardinia is the nuraghe – a circular tower built by the Nuragic civilization around 3,500 years ago. You can use your imagination to guess what they were used for, because historians have no idea – only hypotheses (military bases, ruler’s residences, religious spots etc.). There are more than 700 nuraghes left on the island and you will see many brown signs pointing to them while you drive. Visit one (or several) and feel the ancient vibes they exude. Some of the best-preserved examples in the northern part of Sardinia are Palmavera (near Alghero) and Nuraghe Santu Antine (near Torralba).

This is the most Spanish city in Sardinia – it was colonized by Catalonians in the 16th century and has maintained this special atmosphere ever since. The old town of Alghero is encompassed by a historic citadel with imposing towers and gates, some of them turned into museums or accessible for panorama-lovers to take a look at the roofs of Alghero from above.

One of the highlights of our trip – the Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju (pronounced An-gheh-loo Roo-you) – is a complex of 5000-year-old, underground, rock-hewn tombs that you can explore and even enter (if you feel comfortable in narrow spaces!). For many years the locals, being unable to imagine how these hollow rocks had appeared, believed they were the houses of fairies, and that’s how they named them: domus de janas (homes of fairies). There’s a very fairy feeling here, though the site is actually an ancient graveyard. Who knows, maybe tourists will walk on and wonder about our graves some 2000 years from now.

If you can be in Sassari on 14 and 15 August, you will witness a particularly quirky Sardinian festival: Candelieri, when nine gigantic wooden candles pass through the city in a solemn procession to honor the Virgin Mary, who saved the city from the plague. The old part of Sassari is quiet and inhabited mainly by lazy cats who, on a hot summer day, won’t even make the effort to turn their heads in your direction. For a good chat and a creative atmosphere, sit and sip a coffee at one of the student cafes around the university (in the city center).

We had no intention of visiting this basilica, but the contrasting black basalt and white limestone facade blazing in the sun forced us to pull over by the road. If it reminds you of Tuscany, that’s no surprise because it was built in Tuscan Romanesque style. It’s a 30-km (18-mi) drive from Sassari on the way to Ozieri and Thiesi (see the map above).

You might feel like you’ve seen too many burial sites already, but this one is worth the road traveled (plus the route cuts between scenic hills and plains). One of the domus de janas (remember, the fairy houses = ancient rock tombs) at Sant Andrea Priu Necropolis, the Tomb of the Chief, looks like a 5000-year-old luxury apartment with its 18 rooms sheltered in a cave. Near the main group of rock chambers, there is a headless stone bull believed to represent one of the gods of the Ozieri culture.

There was one time when we had been driving for so many hours and got so hungry that we started imagining each other as hot dogs. So we stopped in the first town – Thiesi – where according to the old traveler’s tradition all restaurants were closed. After all, it was before 4 pm and Italians take their resting time seriously. We rambled through the streets, discovered some amazing murals and finally stopped at the only bar open at the time, where we were the only customers and were fed with the last two sandwiches available. That’s what I call luck!

Detour idea: La Maddalena is probably the most beautiful archipelago in Sardinia – with unreal blue water and myriads of tiny rocky islands accessible by boat tours, it creates the perfect atmosphere to lay back, bask in the sunshine and imagine you are Robinson Crusoe. Or how does a lonely island picnic sound? The resort area of Costa Smeralda is just a stone’s throw away if you need a few days of concentrated sun intake.

Follow the brown road signs and you will reach a small widening of the road, where you can park and climb a shaky wooden ladder to get across a barbed wire fence.
It’s time to check out a (supposed) piece of Mesopotamia in Italy! This more than 6000-year-old megalithic pyramid is amazing for the fact that there is nothing like anywhere else in Italy or in the whole Mediterranean. At the same time, it very much looks like a Mesopotamian temple (ziggurat), which leads scientists to wonder how the two places were connected in those ancient times. Nobody has yet discovered the secret – maybe it’ll be you who unearths the key piece of evidence! Take an information brochure about the monument in your language and learn more about the mystical rituals that took place here.

Driving in Sardinia

I found driving in Sardinia rather care-free – the drivers didn’t seem as anxious as those on the continent, and the traffic wasn’t bad at all. Most of the roads are narrow and curvy as they follow the hills and rocks of Sardinia, and you can’t drive at high speed, so plan enough time to get from one point to another. The best part about driving in Sardinia is that the landscape changes all the time – from high, red-colored mountains and rugged coastlines to endless fields and colorful towns. And don’t forget about the long lines of old men sitting on benches in the town centers watching you as you pass by them:

#1 Bathe in a waterfall

Enjoy a free shower from Mother Nature while exploring unforgettable natural attractions.

Where: Havasu and Mooney Falls (Grand Canyon, USA). Twin Falls and The Seven Sacred Pools (Mawi, Hawaii). McWay Falls (Big Sur, California). Or just visit the nearest waterfall to you.

#2 Go white water rafting

Let the rapids boost your adrenaline as your inflatable boat bounces up and down along the river. Swimming is not a necessary skill – as long as you’re not afraid of water.

Where: Along the Colorado River.

#3 Cross ‘via ferrata’

In Italian ‘via ferrata’ means “iron road”. If you are afraid of heights, you will need nerves of iron (pun intended) to cross this rocky route, although it’s completely safe and you will be secured the whole time. The system of ladders, metal ropes, suspension bridges and railings make the rock formation accessible to everyone, not just professional climbers. After this ‘appetizer’, you may want to try out actual rock climbing.

Where: Telluride (in San Juan Mountains, Colorado).

#4 Hug a very special tree

…and get fresh energy from nature.

A couples escape, a family holiday or a cliche-free solo trip – here’s a selection of our favorite quirky Christmas getaway ideas for a not-so-ordinary holiday season.

Because if you don’t bring the Christmas spirit in your heart, you won’t find it on your travels, even if you venture as far as Lapland.

Plus, if the legend is true, Santa will find you wherever you are.

This list will guide you through all the cool and unusual things you can do this Christmas that turns out to be one of the best Christmas gifts for your friend with whom you are going on a trip during the holidays.

#1 Spend the night at a Bedouin desert camp

Sand, heat, camels: this image is the antithesis of every stereotypical Christmas card. So if you’re looking to do something different, why not head straight to the nearest desert? It doesn’t need to be a rough experience – you can stay in a luxury tent.

Cover yourself in a dollar-store Santa costume and stir up a little holiday confusion on the slopes of your favorite ski resort.

#4 Build an igloo and have a festive dinner inside

If you have kids, make them build the igloo while you prepare the dinner. Bring candles, warm blankets and woolen socks for everyone.

#5 Go on a Christmas road trip

We’re not suggesting just any old road trip; for this challenge, you need to decorate the car. Head somewhere that’s open on Christmas Day, like a nature park or the historical center of a nearby city.

#6 Go boating or kayaking

Book a ticket on the nearest available cruise and sail the holiday season away. Or, if you’d rather travel under your own steam, swap the cruise ship for a kayak.

#7 Just go somewhere colorful

Head to Guatemala, Colombia, Venice, Thailand or anywhere with colors more vivid than a photoshopped image.

#8 Soak in a warm mineral pool (especially if it’s snowing outside)

There is nothing like immersing yourself in an open-air mineral pool in the winter. You’ll feel like you’re cheating nature as you watch snowflakes falling from above while you soak in warm mineral water, not caring about tiny details like weather forecasts or temperatures more suited to polar bears… Bring hot drinks with you.

#9 Spend the day in the company of animals

Don’t get me wrong, humans are okay… but I prefer animals because (other than parrots), I’ve yet to hear one assault my ears with “‘Tis the season to be jolly” for the 1,056,669th time in a row. In fact, I respect animals’ ability to detach from the holiday craze. Find some furry friends at a farm, a nature park or a zoo – whatever you have at hand will do.

#10 Fly to the cheapest foreign country available

Check your favorite airlines’ websites or a flight comparison website to see where you can escape at the last minute… and just do it. Life is short – you should make more silly decisions.

#11 Go surfing

Surfing is a cliche if you are Australian, and an unconventional treat if you are not.

#12 Rediscover yourself at a retreat

Why not head on a silence retreat, a meditation retreat or a nature getaway during the holidays? When the materialistic world becomes too overwhelming, it’s time to run away from it all and sit in silence to rediscover your inner self.

#13 Go skinny-dipping

This challenge is not for the faint of heart if you live close to one of the poles… but it’s still worth it if you want a Christmas to remember.

#14 Embark on a refreshing bicycle ride

If the weather isn’t too frightful, hop on your bike and enjoy a long, serene ride, making sure to occasionally glimpse through the windows of the houses you pass to see what other people do on Christmas Day. The best part about this is that the streets will be empty. Like, zombie-apocalypse empty. Have you checked out our bicycle-themed playlist to keep you company during your ride?

#15 Return to your pagan roots

Christmas is rooted in Christianity, but Christianity is rooted further back in time. Add a pagan flavor to the holiday season by using your days off to visit an ancient monument. It could be a megalith, a stone circle, a tomb or whatever ancient landmark you have nearby.

#16 Organize a snow picnic

Wrap yourself in warm clothes, pack some baked goodies and flasks full of tea and coffee (and rum, and whiskey…), and head out for a picnic in the crisp air. It’s a good idea to pack extra blankets and spare gloves. Here’s our full guide how to organize a winter picnic in the snow.

#17 Change the season

If you have spent your whole life celebrating snowy, white Christmases scented with the smell of chestnuts roasting on the open fire, then a little change will be more than refreshing. Head to another climatic zone and see what the change of scenery has to offer.

Change the season this Christmas | Thomas Kelley

#18 Travel to a neighboring city to eat at an exotic restaurant

As there is no Christmas in China, Bangladesh or Thailand, restaurants serving these national dishes will probably be open. Choose a nearby city and check which international restaurants there have the highest rating on Google, Facebook or TripAdvisor.

#19 Book a remote cabin in the forest

The more remote, the better. Keep it warm and cozy, staying by the fireplace and preparing your own mulled wine. Take advantage of the fact that you are close to nature and practice the Japanese art of ‘forest-bathing’: shinrin-yoku.

#20 Climb somewhere high for a gorgeous view

Depending on your preferences, this may be a skyscraper, a mountain peak or a just a tree.

#21 Eat your Christmas lunch on a plane, train, etc.

Most public transportation continues running even on Christmas Day. Even if you are not forced to be on a plane or train on Christmas Day, you can arrange a journey for yourself and make the most of the trip. Bring some cookies and special cinnamon latte with you if you’re worried about missing the holiday spirit.

Pin it for later, because the Christmas craze may eventually become too overwhelming and you may want to escape:

Whether you do it domestically or abroad, a road trip is one of the best ways to escape the city noise, become one with nature, and treat yourself to a rewarding adventure experience. However, you don’t just wake up one day and – out of the blue – decide it’s time for the rubber to hit the road.

A successful, enjoyable road trip takes proper planning and preparation to ensure that everything goes as smoothly and safely as possible. Ready for your next big adventure? If so, read on for five essential steps to prepare for an unforgettable road trip.

1. Begin Planning Early So Stress Is Minimized

Whether you choose to plan everything or just have a basic knowledge of the itinerary will depend on your traveling style. But Planning ahead is key to a successful road trip.

You can start by finding ideas that sound fun and exciting, such as local events like flower festivals, music concerts, or camping trips, and then build your particular itinerary around it.

Consider whether you’d like to stay in the same hotel for multiple days, camp out, or travel during short day trips throughout different locations. In the first instance, you may want to make accommodation reservations beforehand, at least for the first few days of your trip.

Additionally, knowing what kind of permits are required (if any) will save time and help ensure smooth progress through borders along the way. Most importantly, make sure to check your car ahead of time, and ensure it’s a good fit for your next road trip route.

2. Assemble the Necessary Supplies for Your Trip

Once you’ve mapped out your itinerary, it’s time to start gathering supplies and equipment for your road trip. Think about what kind of tools, gadgets, clothing, or food items you might need on the journey, making sure they’re all packed in advance.

A few suggestions include important documents such as visas and driver’s licenses, a first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, painkillers, and tweezers, as well as basic snacks for long drives. Other essential items for a road trip could be maps, blankets, jumper cables, matches, a travel knife, books, and a portable phone charger.

Ticking off a checklist of these items can help ensure an enjoyable experience without being too encumbered by weighty luggage!

3. Invest in a Reliable GPS System and Familiarize Yourself with It

Having the correct navigation system for your journey is crucial if you’re heading to an unfamiliar destination. Depending on where you are traveling, it might be worth investing in a reliable GPS device with maps of the area.

This could help save time and money while avoiding potential misdirection from outdated route information found online.

Also, take some time before leaving to familiarize yourself with its functions. Having one or a few paper copies of physical maps can come in handy just in case, as service providers vary by country and even location – so being prepared saves stress!

4. Make Sure You Have the Level of Car Insurance You Need

Inadequate insurance coverage can quickly turn a simple breakdown into an expensive (and potentially lengthy) repair bill. It can easily bring your trip to an unexpected end, not to mention the possibility of getting stranded in a car wreck or injuries abroad. This is why it pays to compare auto insurance from different providers to get the best coverage for you and your car before setting out on your trip.

Thanks to websites like https://www.iselect.com.au/car-insurance/, you can easily do this from the comfort of your home or even while on the go. These sites allow you to get personalized recommendations depending on factors like your original location, your destination’s postcode, and your car’s registration. in just a few minutes, you can get a plan that’s tailored for the specific type of travel you’re about to embark on!

5. Research Alternatives to Driving, Such as Using Public Transportation or Flying

The great thing about road trips is that they can be tailored specifically to the traveler’s needs and preferences! Due to this flexibility, don’t feel obligated to stick solely with two-wheel transportation if it doesn’t suit your journey plans.

Consider researching alternative options for getting around such as public transportation (which may offer scenic rides), air travel (for faster transport times), or even renting a van/campervan at select points in your trip. All these can offer unique adventures depending on where you’re headed.

To sum it up, planning and preparation play an integral role in ensuring your road trip is both a safe and enjoyable experience. With the above few tips at your fingertips, your next road trip is almost sure to be unforgettable. So go ahead and get ready: Fulfilling explorations on scenic roads await you!

Road trips are a perfect mix of scenic views, adventurous excursions, and a heartfelt journey, where you make short stops and hit the road whenever you wish to. So, when you think of spending your breaks doing something exciting, nothing beats the idea of setting off on a road trip.

As a student, you may have a limited budget and a number of free days. But you can customize your trip and still have the time of your lifetime.

Choose from these five best road trip routes to plan your next holiday getaway and discover gems in the country of ultimate geographic diversity. If you are loaded with assignments, you can hire professional paper writers from a reliable essay writing service and enjoy your trip without worrying about homework deadlines.

5 Most Picturesque and Affordable Destinations for a Road Trip in the US

Route 66

There is no way you have not heard of Route 66. This cult-favorite highway is stretched from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, and has been historically popular. The best thing is you can start from wherever you are or whatever closest location you can reach on this highway and begin your trip.

This 2000+ miles long trail takes you on a tour of many sites, such as The Painted Desert, The Gateway Arch, Meramec Caverns, and Mojave National Preserve. You can camp, hike, and enjoy roadside eateries for a marvelous traveling experience. Don’t forget to check out discount codes for stays just like you check the essay writing services review platform for a DoMyEssay promo code before hiring a paper writer.

Highway 7, Arkansas

A scenic drive through forests, rivers, and hot springs, Arkansas’ longest highway is a popular riding treasure. This approximate 297 miles long highway runs through the entire state, covering Ozark and Ouachita mountain ranges, Arkansas River Valley, and pine woodlands.

This route is tour-worthy during all seasons, but its beauty is unmatched in spring and winter. You can rent a bike or a car to set out on this spectacular journey. You don’t even need many days to cover this trip and can travel slowly and steadily, enjoying all the breathtaking halts along the way.

You can plan short stays in small towns in the region, drive through magnificent rivers and mountain ranges, and enjoy water sports in hot springs.

Pacific Coast Highway, CA

A drive along the ocean with roads running from beautifully wild forests and towns is what you are on for this road trip. You should start from San Francisco and head south to stay on the ocean-side lane. This two-lane route takes you to well-preserved historical monuments, art museums, and the great redwood forests of California.

Set aside around 3-4 days to cover this road trip to thoroughly enjoy breathtaking seashores and scenic views. You can camp in redwood forests, enjoy drive-through trees in Avenue of the Giants, drive on trees, and even try a unique living experience in houses carved out of trees. Nature’s majesty in this stretch is remarkable and will leave you reflecting on the greatness of its creation.

Southwest National Parks

National parks are the ultimate tourist attractions, and rightfully so. The southwest region of the US is home to five national parks called “The Big Five.” These five famous parks are:

Bryce Canyon National Park;

Canyonlands National Park;

Arches National Park;

Zion National Park;

Capitol Reef National Park.

You can dedicate 5-8 days to this scenic road trip. You also have some very cool hiking destinations on this route where you can take the explorer inside you out. The national parks have all sorts of geographical marvels, including valleys, mountains, and canyons.

The Minnesota North Shore Drive

Black sand beaches have been trending on social media for a while now. One of the stops on this route is a black sand beach and a granite cliff dropping down into a lake. If you are looking for fresh air and a breakaway from a mundane lifestyle, The Minnesota North Shore Drive will take you on a panoramic view of seashores, lakes, waterfalls, cliffs, and hillside forests.

This stretch is spread all the way from Duluth, Minnesota, to Ontario, Canada. However, you can end your trip at Grand Marais, MN.

Conclusion

It is important to consider your budget, check out itineraries, and talk to a few regulars before finalizing your road trip plan if you are going for the first time. Remember, you can gather memories and experiences on a small budget too. Check out the above-mentioned road trip routes with your friends in the coming holidays.

Road tripping is one of the best ways to explore Australia, as it allows you to see the many different faces of the country. When a bunch of Europeans head on an almost month-long road trip in Australia, culture shock and unexpected situations are par for the course (along with plenty of huggable koalas and deadly jellyfish). After completing such a trip in December and January 2018, we’ve decided to list a few useful tips to help you better prepare for your own Aussie adventure.

#1 Australians drive on the left side of the road. If you are used to driving on the other side, you may need some time to get used to this change. If you prefer camping – check Camper Champ, traveling in a motorhome is one of the best ways to travel.

#2 If you plan to visit Melbourne (and you should!), even if it’s summer, pack clothes for all types of weather, from early spring showers to baking summer sun, as the weather tends to change suddenly. It’s not a coincidence that they say: “If you don’t like the weather in Melbourne, just wait for ten minutes.”

#3 Trying to drive the Great Ocean Road in a day is crazy and draining – it’s worth spending a night or two along the way to fully immerse yourself in the amazing scenery. That’s why you should consider getting an aluminum roof top tent so that you’ll have no problems when the weather is changing.

#4 If you travel over the Christmas holidays, keep in mind that two days before and after Christmas and New Year’s Eve almost no shops are open, so stock up on food. Also, check the opening hours of local restaurants if you plan to dine out.

#5 If you want to hire a kayak, surfing equipment etc., you should usually get and return it between 9 am and 5 pm. It turned out that finding a rental kayak for a sunset tour was not an easy feat. It’s also important to call up at least one week in advance, especially in the high season, as you may find everything has been pre-booked.

#6 If you want to see kangaroos, koalas, wombats and penguins parading at sunset and other exotic (at least to foreigners) animals in their natural habitat, plan a trip to Phillip Island.

Philip Island, Australia | © www.203challenges.com

#7 For a chance to see and feed possums, head to Kalimna Woods Cottages at Lake’s Entrance.

#8 If you have included the Blue Mountains National Park in your itinerary, here is a useful tip to skip the crowds: choose a trail other than the Three Sisters Walk. All trails offer the same views but the Three Sisters Walk is the most overloaded with human traffic.

Blue Mountains, Australia | ©www.203challenges.com

#9 A stop in Sydney always includes a scenic view of the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House (and of the New Year’s fireworks above them if you have planned your visit to coincide with this major celebration). The best views are from Taronga Zoo, Kurraba Point or Robertsons Point. Some people arrive at these viewpoints hours in advance to spend the whole New Year’s Eve there, but you can also arrive at the last minute and it will still be easy to find a good vantage spot.

#10 In every single AirBnB we rented, there were cockroaches, every time getting bigger and bigger. It’s a good idea to buy some anti-cockroach spray if you can’t stand the sight of a huge bug on your wall.

#11 Include a stopover at Byron Bay – a coastal town full of people from all over the world who have come here to make their dreams come true. It’s a lively and inspiring place famed for its hippy, alternative atmosphere and beaches that are perfect for surfing.

#12 Always read the signs on the beach carefully because they tell you if there are jellyfish or anything dangerous/poisonous in the water. If you see a picture-perfect beach with nobody in the water, always suspect that there may be a sign you have missed.

#13 If you are a cruise lover ready to see the Great Barrier Reef, you can book a two- or three-day sea tour in Cairns, where you actually spend the night on a ship and enjoy diving three times a day, including night diving. If you are restricted by time, you can go diving on a single-day tour, too. Although Cairns is most famous for its surfing spots, don’t miss Kuranda Rainforest Village only 25 km (15 mi) from Cairns (and don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent and plenty of water).

Life is a funny thing. Sometimes it gives you the feeling you are on a roller coaster that only goes up. Hopelessly trying to make it worthwhile, we indulge in multitasking and busy schedules. But do we appreciate the life we have here and now or are we constantly focused on the future?

Talking about “traveling”, for some people a “vacation” means lying on a tropical beach or staying in an expensive hotel and there is nothing wrong with that. As the saying goes:

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us”.

But now, we challenge you to think outside the box and look closely into these trip ideas. They will help you relax and grow as a person at the same time.

1. Travel back to your roots

You are always looking forward to the next trip in your calendar. What if you look back in time for once? Do you know what part of the world your ancestors come from? In order to move on with your life, you should find out where you started from. What’s more, you never know what secrets you will discover. You might be the heir of a royal family or an ancient kin! Take your parents or grandparents along. Traveling through places where they grew up may prove to be an emotional experience.

2. A long-distance trek

You love the outdoors and staying active or you would like to complete a pilgrim trek because of religion. Whatever the reasons, to conquer hundreds of miles on foot or by horse is an impressive accomplishment!

A long-distance trek offers you the chance to tune off, detach and clear your head. Surrounded by nature, you will be rewarded with plenty of time alone to figure out where you’re at in your life. An open mind and a backpack is all you need to start.

Here are some worldwide trek ideas:

Camino de Santiago or just El Camino for short is a pilgrimage that begins in France and ends in front of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Northern Spain. For many years now, pilgrims from around the world take part in the 500-mile/800-km picturesque trek.

When in the United States, you might get inspired by the story of Cheryl Strayed, (author of Wild). She took on a 1000-mile self-discovery hike following the Pacific Crest Trail all the way from Mexico to Canada. Cheryl set out on her journey all alone with barely any hiking experience, but we recommend you gear up well and fully prepare before you go.

Following the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru is on top of my bucket list. Even though this site has become Peru’s most popular attraction and one of the most visited in the world, I still believe it is worth it to see the 15th-century archaeological ruins. There are a few options for hiking to Machu Picchu. Just bear in mind there is a 200-people daily limit on the trail for conservation reasons. Find out more here.

3. Live with locals

You might have planned the perfect trip abroad – to use a map, wander around the streets, get lost, and eat a local dish. Yet there is something missing. What you really need is a local who will spend some time with you. A local who will tell you about history, show you all the off the beaten track spots or just have an interesting conversation with you over coffee or beer. You can meet up with locals through emerging social platforms like Courchsurfing and GlobalGreeters or you could simply join a free tour.

I have lots of experience with locals. My favorite one so far was during an university exchange program in Portugal. I shared an apartment with 3 Portuguese girls for 6 months and had the best time of my life!

4. Become a volunteer

You want to do something valuable with your time? Become a volunteer! You just need a cause that suits you. Volunteering as a way of travel allows you to spend from a few weeks up to a couple of months in a foreign country. You will have the chance to improve small communities, interact with locals, gain priceless experience and make new friends at the same time. You can even become a volunteer in your hometown – plant trees, clean up parks or organize music festivals. Whatever you choose, remember that an act of kindness made for someone else will immediately boost your happiness.

You will find good volunteer trip ideas almost anywhere in the world. Building houses in Costa Rica, teaching English in Nepal or caring for abused elephants in an Elephant Nature Park in Thailand. There are endless possibilities. I personally have the latter on my bucket list. If you’re also against riding elephants as a tourist attraction, visit the Park’s website and learn more here.

5. Go on a big road trip

One of the most beautiful and picturesque roads in the world are also the curviest ones. But they are totally worth it! Going on a big road trip without a specific travel plan is somewhat liberating and challenging even for experienced travelers. To have an authentic experience, you could eat in diners and sleep in motels along the way!

A few road trip ideas:

US Route 66 is probably the most famous road you can take. Established in the early 20th century, it originally ran from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica, California, covering a little less than 4000 km (2500 miles).

Another scenic road in the USA is the Pacific Coast Highway also known as Highway 1. It runs for 1000 km along the Californian coast passing attractions such as Santa Barbara, Big Sur, Monterey, San Francisco Bay Area. What’s more, Highway 1 connects two of the largest cities in the state – Los Angeles and San Francisco. Get ready for rocky cliffs, wild nature and stunning views.

You can find similar scenery of the ocean, clear blue skies and green fields on the Southern coast of Australia where the Great Ocean Road stretches for as long as 243 km (151 miles).

>>> Read more: 13 Useful Tips Before You Head on a Road Trip in Australia

6. Overcome your fears

Do something that scares you! Skydive, bungee jump, scuba dive, rock climb, talk to foreigners or ride a bicycle. Whatever gives you the creeps, face it! The first and most important step is to give it a try.

When it comes to traveling, adventures and extreme sports, people have this common “What if something happens…” fear. What if, what if… but what if nothing happens? It’s natural to be afraid of something you have never done before. You are afraid not because it is scary, but because you have no idea what to expect. If that is the case, just remind yourself there are thousands of people around the world who have done it before you. And they are normal people, just like you!

Fear means you are about to do something mind-blowing! After you do it and the adrenaline rush kicks in, you will feel silly for previously being afraid.

7. Find out where your food comes from

In the time of GMOs, altered foods and artificial products, we challenge you to find local venues where you can see for yourself where our food comes from. It could be a winery or a brewery where you could get acquainted with the production process – from picking up grapes through fermentation to bottling. When in South America, be sure to visit a coffee plantation and do a coffee tour. Pick up, dry, roast and grind coffee beans for your own cup of coffee.

A challenge for advanced travelers would be to visit a farm or a ranch and do some volunteer work. Once you learn what it takes to make cheese and butter out of milk, you will definitely appreciate food more. Wherever you travel, do as the locals do – drink wine in Tuscany or Provence, whiskey in Ireland, espresso in Italy. And simply enjoy every bite!

8. Travel solo

Travel solo at least once per year

At least once a year set out on a trip planned especially to fulfill you and you only. Solo travel enriches you in a way companion travel cannot. Make sure you choose an activity or a destination where you feel safe enough, but still outside your comfort zone. It could be a week in a foreign city abroad, a digital detox or a camping weekend. Be ready to feel the self-confidence, creativity and clear mind that will come along.

Whether you are taking a business trip, visiting national parks, or a travel writer looking for your next blog post -long car trips can be painful.

If you don’t feel like spending money and booking flights, then a road trip is a great idea.

We have gathered the best travel tips to make your future road trips easy, helping you to save money while having fun.

1) What car are you taking?

The kind of car you drive will depend on your destination, and how many travel buddies you have. If you are going on dirt roads, you may opt for an all-wheel-drive vehicle (we love the Kia Sportage). For a family trip, select a car with an extra seat in the back and plenty of boot space.

2) Check your car before you go

Nothing is worse than having an unexpected, but preventable, breakdown in the early morning in the middle of nowhere. Before you hit the road, ask your mechanic to check your oil levels, brakes, tire pressure and transmission.

It is also a good idea to keep jumper cables in your car. Make sure your spare tire is inflated, and that you know how to change a tire!

3) Have a vague plan

Having a vague idea of where you are heading and stopping will be a great help. Try to book accommodation ahead of time so that you don’t end up driving around looking for a place to sleep.

Booking online ahead of time can help you find the best deals.

4) Embrace your phone

On long stretches of road, you may find yourself listening to the screech of the radio as it struggles to get a signal. In this case, it is great to have your phone loaded with podcasts, audiobooks or downloaded music. You should make sure you have a phone’s car charger on hand.

If the kids are driving you mad from the back seat, your phone can be used to keep the kids occupied. Streaming platforms like Netflix or AppleTV are excellent at keeping the complaining to a minimum.

If your car does not have built-in navigation, then your phone is useful for Google Maps or Waze to get you to your destination.

5) Divide the workload

If you have travel partners, try dividing up driving time. Also divide up other duties like navigating, meal planning and packing. If you pack light, it will be easier to fit more into the car, but figuring out the puzzle of suitcases into a boot is not for everyone.

6) Sign up for roadside assistance

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. By signing up for roadside help you can drive in peace knowing that someone will be able to come help you if you break down. Assistance companies can link you to reputable car towers and mechanics if you are in a pinch.

7) Have your documents in order

Make sure you have all your important documents with you. This includes your driver’s licence, car registration and travel insurance information. Anyone that has gone on a road trip can confirm that you risk being pulled over by traffic authorities at least once, and you don’t want to be stuck without your papers.

You may also want to pay any outstanding traffic tickets, as your car can be impounded if you have large outstanding fines.

8) Try the road less travelled

The highway may be the quickest way to get to your destination, but road tripping is about seeing the sights, even if it extends your journey by a few hours. If you venture through country roads, you will experience a lot more, like odd tourist attractions, local diners and quirky accommodation options.

8) Cool bag and snacks

Always keep snacks at hand, especially if you have kids in the car. There can be large distances between gas stations, so fill a few plastic bags with snacks, or get an electric cool box for drinks. This will make sure everyone is satisfied in between rest stops.

9) Work out a budget

If you plan your budget beforehand you will know how much money is required for the whole road trip. Rather overestimate your budget to cover all unforeseen expenses.

If you are a group travelling going on a road trip together, work out a communal budget and stick to it. Discuss how much everyone plans on spending each day, and set extra money aside for activities and roadside attractions.

10) Carry a physical map

GPS has made us all lazy and has certainly simplified road tripping. Sometimes you may lose GPS signal in mountainous regions, and that is when a real map or map book will come in handy.

You can also download offline maps to your phone if you don’t know how to read a map.

Final Thoughts

Going on a road trip should be fun! If you travel light, stick to the speed limit, and take care of your car (and your road trip partners), you will have a great time without any problems.

Planning to go on a road trip with your friends? Want to go and make some memories but are on a strict budget? Wondering how to plan a road trip with friends on a budget? Don’t worry – you can still have a great student road trip without burning holes in your pockets.

With meticulous college road trip planning and with the help of some money-saving hacks, you can be on the way to your new adventure.

When you are a college student, you have to study a lot. From writing essays on various topics to submitting the best research paper samples, your knowledge base needs to vast during college education.

As students, you shouldn’t study all the time. Plan a college road trip! Want to learn how to save money on a road trip? Let’s take a look at college road trips ideas for college road trip planning.

1. Choose Your Route

You know where you are going to and going from and you think you can figure out the rest along the way, right? Wrong! It is great that you know your destination, but you have to think about the route you are going to take on your way there.

You have to plan the fuel stops, overnight accommodation, etc. Moreover, you need to set out time to explore the lesser-known beauty spots and attractions along the route. This will help you maximize your experiences.

The answer to how to plan a road trip with friends becomes clear if you plan ahead. If you don’t choose your route and plan it beforehand, you could end up spending more money than you had anticipated.
